Which Sid Meier game do you think is the best?
I like civ 2,3 and 4 as well as the Pirates! remake. civ3 was probably best out of those

I've played Civ II and III but not IV yet. I like both but its a hard call between them. I loved Alpha Centauri. I no longer have it do to someone breaking my cd though. You know where I might get a copy? Can't find one around here.

Gettysburg is definatly underrated, but not the best. I'd go with either CIV3 or CIV4. CIV3 is better for war mongers, but CIV4 evens it out with how much more in-depth it is. Most people with CIV4 just have to develop a new strategy, and as long as you do that, you can make it an enjoyable war-mongers game.
I was addicted to Pirates for too long

Alpha Centauri/Alien Crossfire, then Pirates.
Hmmmmmmmm....
Civilisation...or Alpha Centauri.
But I grew up on the early Microprose games. I have a soft spot for all of them. :p

Alpha Centauri. I picked it up for $15 a few years ago, and enjoyed it greatly. I picked up Civilization III for $50 later on, and enjoyed that for a while, but I think that I ended up having much more fun with Alpha Centauri. It had it's share of flaws, but when I played Civilization III, it always seemed like it was missing things that Alpha Centauri had, or had things that were better done in Alpha Centauri.

I agree totally. Civ IV is closer, but still lacks some of the wonderful complexity that Alpha Centauri employed, in favour of being more accessible to newcomers.

Probably Civilization I. I never liked much the II or the III. Alpha Centauri is great too.
Freeciv and CivCTP are great, also, but not from Sid Meyer ;)
Civ 2, first PC game i ever played :P
C3C [ Civ Conquests ] is my favorite...

though i've been a gamer for many years, i had never played any civ games (bar a demo for alpha centurai) till i got VI recently... and i love it!! :D
and i kick ass in it, i might add :P
RTS's were way better, i used to think... then shogun TW (and medieval) came along and i much preferred the turn-based trategy map part of those games, but didn't even consider the civ's for some reason. wishing i had now :(

Try Sold-OUT software. I've got a copy by them. Then the usual channels - Amazon.com/co.uk or ebay.

Civ I, or Alpha Centurai
I also like Pirates and Railroad tycoon 1 & 3 (2 Sucks)
Antietam/Gettysburg was great too
Now if we can add Chris Sayer to the mix as well (G)
But I agree I would by a game if it was from Microprose (I lost vast tracks of time to Civ, Silentservice, apache etc)
Didn't Sid do a golf game with the people from sensible (or is that just my bizarre imagination fouling up)

I forgot about colonisation, what would I do without my indentured servants.
I must admit though I am wondering if Sid originally wanted to put attribute gains/penalties on the religions in Civ IV but bowed out due to PCness. cause that would make it exceptionally more interesting.. to force Buddhism onto a militaristic superpwer mwuhuhuhuhahahaha, or if you could get Fundi units...
but I suppose that might make it as stupid as call to power.

I have a vague recollection that he was working on a Jurassic Park type game, or something like that. (which would be awesome if he can pull it off, because generally, they've sucked. Anyone remember Trespasser? The best part about that was looking down and seeing your character's cleavage.)

Despite the fact that it is quite dated and basic compared to modern games.

Absolutely! It's been several years and it's pretty much patched as close as it can get to perfection - For a while, it was pretty bad, but I don't have any problems with it anymore. No point getting EU1, get the second instead.
If you like WW2 strategy games, you can't go past Hearts of Iron 2 either, though it's still in the patching process (somewhat. It's pretty stable), I recommend it highly. Victoria is also good, but it's a little complicated and has a bit more of a learning curve. They are great games, and IMO they are some of the few truly innovative titles in the strategy genre in recent years.

the most innovative game or best for its time is easily civ 2, the best now is civ 4, though i like alpha centauri too and colonisation isnt bad actually. anyone looking for a free copy of civ 1 or 2 or colonization can find them here (www.abandonia.com) (they are now whats known as 'abandonware' and are part of the public domain), you may need to emulate DOS to run them

Well Ok not Civ V as RTS, but I would love to see an RTS with the scope of Civ, and the balance of units.
maybe we could link all the total war series together.... LOL

Eh, that's not strictly true...it's a legal grey area. The copyright holders in most instances haven't given their approval to distribute those games...and they have the right to revoke it at any time. I am a supporter of abandonware, but you should warn people that it is technically against the law. Abandonia is a good site though, as they immediately remove the links if the copyright holder makes a complaint. As does The Underdogs (www.the-underdogs.org).

i totaly agree with Alpha Centauri/Alien Crossfire.............. too many nights not having to do anything

Civ I also holds a dear place in my heart, but since every race you could play was pretty much the same as every other race it loses out to Alpha Centauri.
