Cat Calls 911 to Help Owner, Police Say

Published January 2, 2006, 5:39 AM CST

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Police aren't sure how else to explain it. But when an officer walked into an apartment Thursday night to answer a 911 call, an orange-and-tan striped cat was lying by a telephone on the living room floor. The cat's owner, Gary Rosheisen, was on the ground near his bed having fallen out of his wheelchair.

Rosheisen said his cat, Tommy, must have hit the right buttons to call 911.

"I know it sounds kind of weird," Officer Patrick Daugherty said, unsuccessfully searching for some other explanation.

Rosheisen said he couldn't get up because of pain from osteoporosis and ministrokes that disrupt his balance. He also wasn't wearing his medical-alert necklace and couldn't reach a cord above his pillow that alerts paramedics that he needs help.

Daugherty said police received a 911 call from Rosheisen's apartment, but there was no one on the phone. Police called back to make sure everything was OK, and when no one answered, they decided to check things out.

That's when Daugherty found Tommy next to the phone.

Rosheisen got the cat three years ago to help lower his blood pressure. He tried to train him to call 911, unsure if the training ever stuck.

The phone in the living room is always on the floor, and there are 12 small buttons -- including a speed dial for 911 right above the button for the speaker phone.

"He's my hero," Rosheisen said.

Edit: Of course the training stuck. It's just that we are smart enough to know that 911 is for emergencies only and not for "practice"...

You think that's impressive? Bitch, please. I trained my cat to call Immigration and Customs Enforcement at the sound of a whistle.

Not that it's ever saved my life, but, y'know.....cool to say at parties and such.

wow, so his owner is in trouble, and the cat just makes a phone call and lays there? see, typical lazy cat. My dog would have went to get help, not laid around waiting for help to arrive............

just kidding, that is kinda cool. My dog really would actually go get help though. ;)

There's a lot of really weird stories about cats saving lives.

When I used to get CatFancy (because I'm weird), they did an article about some of the miraculous things cats have done to save lives. One of them mentioned a story about how a cat was lying on top of the television, and the family was watching TV. The cat lept off, scratched at their legs and got their attention, and led them out of the room. Then the TV blew up and sent debris and glass all over the sofa.

Animals are alot more attentive than we think!

I knew a cat that was trained to use the toilet, sadly, they could never get him to flush it.

Apparently, this kind of thing has happened before. On October 29, 2004, a dog dialed 911 (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6359754/).

You can teach a dog to poke its nose into anything... including a blender.

Dogs also have a hero complex. Save the Alpha at all costs! Ffftt!

My guess is that Tommy realized that there would be no dinner as long as his Slave was lying on the floor, so it was an obvious Emergency (since the lazy oaf didn't teach him how to dial for Pizza, what else could he do...?)

That sounds like a cat thing to me... I wonder if you could train a hamster to do any of this...

Speed dial, my friend. Both the cat and the dog used speed dial.

no dog has ever trained me to do anything.

Nero walks to the door and I open it for him, even if he doesn't want to go out, I go to work to feed him and also will not move once he has become lap fungus.

I am sure he has trained me to call 999 if required, Cat's are the smartest animal in the multiverse.

My communist Anthro Kitty revolution was overthrown by the counter insugent forces throwing me a ball of wool and a catnip mousey. bahhh!
