Exactly. The media jumped to conclusions, as usual. If they'd held off for confirmation from the company involved, there'd be no such problem, but of course the media jumped over the first little bit of info to get through.

No. The media correctly reported what they were told by the families.

The mining company fucked up. They mistakenly told the families the miners had survived, then didn't correct themselves for three hours after they knew the truth.

Actually, if you read the other thread about this, the mining company said NOTHING about the miners being alive. It was a piece of misinformation brought about by the rescuers saying "Checking vital signs", which led people to believe that they were alive, since they didn't take into account that checking for vital signs, even when a body isn't moving, is standard procedure in rescue situations.

This is why you shouldn't trust the media.

Hopefully they'll find the bastard that said they were alive and hang him by their toenails.

I was in West Virginia during this and the mood was not a happy one :(

My thoughts and prayers go out to the families of those that are deceased and pray that the lone survivor lives. He is in critical condition right now in a WV Hospitol.

From what I have heard, and this was in WV, there appears to be no signs of CO exposure. I don't know how accurate that is but that is what I have heard in WV.

Yeah, because lack of oxygen causes brain damage before it kills you. 4 minutes without oxygen causes brain damage, 5 kills you, unless you're panicking and hyperventilating, in which case it would happen faster.

I thought they didn't send miners down without proper equipment these days, since there is very little oxygen down there...

The Oxygen they carry is limited. That is why when something like this happens, you hope the find an air pocket. That is what happened here in PA at the mine collapse. THey found an air pocket and survived.

Sometimes forcing oxygen into the body can get rid of the carbon dioxide and prevent damage. I dont know what this man's injuries are though.

I do hope for his recovery and my thoughts are with all the families and friends of the men that died that just had a very cruel and miserable night.

there was probably enough oxygen in the mine, but the CO binds stronger to the haemoglobin than oxygen, so the blood can no longer bind to the oxygen and transport it. they would have needed a CO scrubber.

Was the fellow that survived in the same area as the twelve that died? Any decent graphics of the mine layout?
