The last ditched defence of the English language

Are you annoyed by all the people finding "original" ways to spell? Are you eyes bleeding if you see the "grammer" some posters are using? Is your heart weeping when you witness the English language being butchered?

If you fulfill al the requirements above, then this is the right place for you. Please post quotes with the worst mistakes you have stumbled upon on this forum. Hopefully the 'guilty party' will change his/her wicked ways (although I'm not very optimistic about that). :)

And since I want to be fair and square, I'll begin by quoting myself:The mosquito. It uses the humans for his own needs.

*Cough cough*

Are you eyes bleeding if you see the "grammer" some posters are using?

Aside from the fact that "Are your eyes bleeding if you see" makes no sense.

I'd go into greater detail about the rest of your post, and the title of the thread, but that one phrase pretty much sums it up.

I personally can't stand the seemingly endless sentences that some people post... There's a reason we have punctuation marks. :p

Riiight... I mean, aren't you also amazed a heart can weep? They don't have tear glands, you know?

Edit: I just wanted to be sure. You do know what a figure of speech is, don't you?

My pet peeve is the misuse of at, e.g.:

"Where are you at?"

On a related note, the annual LSSU Banished Words List (http://www.lssu.edu/banished/) is always good for a chuckle or two. :D

ha ha.

Me and my sisters* used to drive my mum insane by using "would of" rather then the correct "would have."

Also, the dropping of letters in front of "x." Xcess, Xtra, Xtreme etc. Marketing people seem to love this (and the word "Xtreme" in general).

Yeah, well, if it was punctured, it could weep blood, so it's not that surprising. Y'know, stab to the heart if you love the English language. Yeah.

And related to that, not using paragraphs is annoying for large chunks of text.

I guess the worst are those people who compose run-on sentences without punctuation. Punctuation gives the sentence part of its meaning, and lack of it can change what they meant to say.

Sorry, meant to put that in the footnote (*this actually brings up another thing, people saying me and x). But then thought of the "X" thing and forgot to finish it off.

I went to LSSU for a year. The Banished Word List is probably the only worthwhile thing that school does.

Was 'grammar' not misspelt on purpose? I can't see why he would put it in quote marks otherwise.

[sic] is only used when quoting, mostly in formal work. It'd be kind of silly to use it here. The quotation marks get the point across pretty well.

;)

Using the quotation marks in the way he did simply gives the impression he is mocking the fact people might consider their grammar to be correct, using them sardonically.

As in:
"I like your 'spelling'." when somebody has just made a number of spelling mistakes.

[sic] is only used in formal work, except when a Daily Mail journalist wants to try and appear superior, and inevitably fails.

To be fair, the fact that he can actually write an article, however poorly or misguided, would make him superior to most of his readership.

Last ditched (Should be last-ditch, and is usually used with "attempt" not "defence")

Are you eyes bleeding if you see...(No grammatical sense)

Is your heart weeping when you witness...Again, no grammatical sense)

al the requirements above...

Good point, and in some circles, it gets worse. Anime fans have brought in a myriad of Japanese loanwords (then again, Japanese has a truly astonishing number of English borrowings).

1) I don't know... I goggled for "last ditched defence" and I found 137 000 results: http://www.google.ro/search?hl=ro&q=last+ditched+defense&meta=. But if I was wrong, I'm sorry.

2+3)You really don't know what a figure of speach is, don't you?

4) It was a typo. The only 'al' I know is in 'Al Pacino'. :)

I don't mind being proven wrong, but please, people, don't try to find mistakes where there aren't any (no. 2 and no.3 are especially targeted by this comment).

My all time favourite example of poor grammar. It is not 'a myriad of', it is just 'myriad'. The sentence should be:
Anime fans have brought in myriad Japanese loanwords

If you're going to use them as figures of speech, then say "Does your heart weep when you see" or "Do your eyes bleed when you see", not "Is your heart weeping when[...]" and "Are your eyes bleeding when[...]".

And also, number 2 had "Are you eyes", which should be "Are your eyes", if you really disagree with the ways in which I find it wrong.

[EDIT] And it's Googled, not goggled, since you're being so asinine about all this. :)

Oh, and since you've already replied, just because a number of people use it doesn't make it right. And GoogleFight says it's last-ditch.
