Something I've noticed:
There are often groups of people that romanticize losing sides.
Nazis.
The American Confederacy.
Soviet Socialism.
I don't udersand it. I don't understand Rebel flags. I don't understand swastkas. I REALLY don't understand Che Guevarra t-shirts(He'd shoot you first just for buying one.).
But that's okay. I'm used to not understanding such things. I'm just a simple clown who likes mud and groin kicks.
But what ever happened to Napoleon? Doesn't he deserve some recognition too? Isn't he worthy of a cultish organization of fans and obsessive lunatics who are so disillusioned with their world and their place in it that they will devote themselves to a cause that 'almost worked' in the belief that things would have been better if it had?
Napoleon deserves recognition too!

Napoleon was no different really from any other political figures. Plus, he was too long ago.
At his time and for some time after, there were thousands and thousands of Bonapartists, and there were purges and so on.

Meh, it's probably because of the uh...um...I dunno. There wasn't all that much difference between the winners and losers of that war, really.

It also says here that Bonapartist is everything where militaristic counterrevolutionaries take over the people's revolution and establish their dictatorship.
And that the current heir to Napoleon's throne is Napoleon Joseph Charles Paul Bonaparte.

The problem with fighting for Napoleon's cause is that he had more than one: initially as a Republican firebrand, and then (as if just to piss off everybody that had anything emotionally invested in him) declaring himself to be a fricking Emperor. It is hard to get too worked up about anyone who seemed in the end to be just self-serving. Cromwell gets the same kind of response: there are those who admire his desire to tear down the British Crown, but are them appalled by what he put in its place.

i dont worship napoleon, but i named my new car after him and have a reproduction of David's "Napoleon Crossing the Alps" on my wall.
i have to admit, i'm a fan. i think he--well, his legend--is really interesting. the way one person had such a huge influence on history, and all because he was insecure about his height.
napoleon + josephine = 4ev3r.

I'm all about Napoleon, the only people I like more are Genghis Khan and William the Conqueror.. There are many of us, we're just not a very cohesive group, everyone wants to be leader, no one will be lead. We don't make T-Shirts because everyone would see it coming then.. I believe a country needs a couple of coup d'etats and bouts of conquest just to keep itself from stagnating... Julius Caesar is another one like that.. In fact, Julius Ceasar was the one Napoleon based himself after.

he did almost take over europe, plus he possed an incredible amount of charisma, i.e. the first time he was exiled he came back and raised an army and took over again. Really and truly whats not to worship about him.
and mad props for the che shirt, thats pretty damn sweet.

Well, he did take over most of europe. Just made the same damn mistake every megalomaniac who tries to dominate Europe makes...went after the Russians.
And if only more people got the shirt.
on second thought, I like them not getting it. It amuses me.

Only the French would have one of the most bloody and terrible revolutions in history, and probably the worst and most violent supressions during the Reign of Terror. And all to destroy the so called oppressive monarchy, only to declare some short over zealous general who wasn't even French their emperor. He wasn't even an aristocrat.
It seems De Gualle fans took the place of Napoleon fans.
I have three t-shirts with 'Je Suis Napoleon!' printed on them :P

Lol, I'm just pointing out that Napoleon wasn't an idealist, he was hypocritical and just wanted power. But credit must be given somewhere, the Battle of Austerlitz was an amazing military acheivement, in a hour he managed to raze the coalition to rubble, and dissolved the holy roman empire that week. I hope this becomes a history discussion thread:) , imperial age battles are the best, in fact i think all modern combat from this day forth should be done in that fashion. Foward Grenadiers!w:mp5:

...Russia? China? England? Vietnam? Not sure if Cuba counts, as I don't know what the government was like before Castro... And yes, Napoleon was an aristocrat. His family was a minor noble family in Corsica, which is a weird sort of half-French, half-Italian culture.
Two things I'd like to point out. First, Che Guevera's side won; Castro is still in power. Second, Napoleon was not short. His autopsy placed him at a very small height, but that's because it used French feet, which are longer than English feet. His real height was around 5'6" by English measure- average height for a man of his time. It didn't help the 'short' image that most of his advisors and generals were huge military guys.
Now, on to the OP. The French still have a great deal of respect for Napoleon; that's how Napoleon III came to power in 1848 (the title of Napoleon II was posthumously granted to the original Napoleon's son). The main reason no one loudly yells in his support is that there's no reason to do so. His political affiliation began with the liberal revolutionaries, and ended with the conservative monarchists. While it wouldn't surprise me if a nationalist French part took up Napoleon as a symbol of French strength and the power of conservatism, they'd be partly wrong- Napoleon's original cause of the republic has been achieved, and his flag, the tricolore, is the national flag of France
Napoleon deserves recognition too!

Might they also have been afraid of being sent to some distant island like St. Helena to die by the British, for supporting 'Bonnie the Ogre' as they called him.

very nice. ive also seen shirts that have the traditional che' logo but they have a dollar sign on his bret and a caption that says "this shirt brought to you by capitalism" and another shirt that has the traditional background but has a picture of reagan on it and says "viva le reagan revolcion".
oh and che' really didnt win anything but the money owed to him by the system that bought his services. he was just another hired gun in the grand scheme of things.

I always liked reading about Napoleon at school - try Vincent Cronin's biography, fascinating read. The 100 days was amazing - it would never have worked, even if he'd won at Waterloo, but... well, if it was just a story rather than a history, I'd be a Napoleon fan :)
