What is common sense? Why do so few people show any?

Yes.

So-called "common sense" is so uncommon because it requires attendence at the "School of Hard Knocks," and most people are insulated from having to attend.

Common-sense is the knowledge that everyone should be able to aquire through experience. For example, it's common sense that if you stick your hand in a blender while it's running that you could chop your fingers off, maybe you don't actually know this from experience but you know that the blades chop things and that your fingers are "choppable" so you don't do this.

My theory is that people haven't been taught to think, they may know that the blades chop, but are unable to connect that with the fact that their fingers are "choppable" and so they do stupid things.

so post originator, in order for you to make a thread like this, youve most likely had some over-exposure to people without common sense over the holidays. share with us the kinds of senseless things people do that annoy you.

It's not just him, stupid people annoy me too.

I'm not talking "stupid" in the sense of someone who may be limited, but is trying their hardest, I'm talking about "stupid and proud of it". (i.e. Bam Margera)

Ok, The driver who stopped her car in the middle of a one lane road to yell at someone, stopping at least 30 cars. The mother who ignored her kids while they pulled stuff off the shelves while shopping. The shoppers who put meat and frozen foods on dry goods shelves, because they changed their minds and couldn't be bothered to put them back where they belonged. The people at the movie theater who were informed several times that cell phones were not permitted in the theater and talked on them anyway. And all the drivers who talked on their cell phones while driving. And, yes, I probably annoyed some people with some stupid behavior myself, no one is immune to occasional senseless moments.

The lack of common sense people tend to show sometimes is rather annoying. You would think that people would start to learn at some point but often times they never do. I do my best to just ignore them whenever possible.

oh you are describing inconsiderate people, I wouldn't doubt that they lack common sense too though.

The people that annoy me are the ones really with no sense of cause/effect. Like my neighbors who were setting off illegal fireworks last night during a burn ban with a wild fire that was heading for our houses, and winds up to 50 mph., or the guy who gets pulled over knowing that he has 30 pounds of drugs in his car and stupidly gives the officer probable cause to search his car and find the drugs, or my ex-boyfriend that tried to sell crack to the police, or this guy I used to work with that electrocuted himself trying to fix his car.

There is some so called common sense that actually is common nonsense. I can only use the common sense that has been abandoned. Such as it is common sense that the world is flat; That the sun revolves around the earth: That lefties should really learn to be righties: That flaming fags should be in mental instatutions; That god condones slavery. All these ideas used to be "common sense" now they are widely regarded as "common nonsense".

He was working on the radio, and the car was running and he was trying to spit his chewing tobacco juice into the floor board and he got the wires wet, and it shocked him. (at least that was his story when I went to the ER to get the keys to the drop safe) I am sure that he was doing something even dumber. He once got 2nd and 3rd degree burns on his face and chest when his car was overheated and he opened the radiator to see if it needed water

That setting being at a comfortable distance from myself. ...Unless I've decided to be stupid that day. In which case, enjoy the show. :D

Sometimes inconsiderate and senseless are the same thing. as my son, who let this girl he barely knew use his car when he was overseas, found out - she used it to sell drugs. It could have destroyed his security clearance.

I read your post about your neighbors. I hope everything worked out for you and your family. I live in SoCal, a wildfire area, and understand the situation totally.

yeah, I know the feeling. I was talking to my aunt the other day about how I am pulling my 4 year old out of preK because she is bored and I am going to homeschool her.
She says "she needs to learn that sometimes life is boring" and while I am trying to explain to her exactly how bored my kid is and how bored I was in school and how my kid is on a 2nd grade level and they won't skip her up, she says.........are you ready?

"If you teach her all this stuff now, what is she going to do with the rest of her life? I mean if she can read at 4 then what is she going to do at 12 when she Knows everything?"

is that not the stupidest thing you ever heard?!

I think I am not going to let my kids around her anymore, she actually thinks that there isn't always new stuff to learn.:headbang: I suppose that is why she is stupid though, I still strive to learn 20 new things a day, she on the other hand I am sure quit learning anything about 30 years ago.

the wealth of stupidity around here is astounding. He did get a shock that knocked him unconcious and stopped his heart for a while, it seems that he had the wires hooked up wrong(go figure) and there was a power surge or something........

Logan's Law # 6: Common Sense isn't

Common sense is what's left over after one removes all the mitigating circumstances from a situation. It's very easy to say that someone didn't use common sense, but when there are all sorts of things diverting their attention away from common sense, one would be hard pressed to honestly say they would have made the "sensible" decision.

'common sense' is like 'open mindedness' that si the inverse of being a nazi. See a erson who agrees with your logic is displaying 'common sense' and the cheerleaders that support your opinion are 'open minded' All heretics that disagree are actually 'nazis'. Welcome to Polemic 101

No... nonsense is when things make no sense. The earth, from where I am sitting, looks perfectly flat. The sun, from where I am sitting, moves across the sky. These things make sense.

Don't know about those others, myself, but they make sense to someone.

Which goes a way toward explaining why science seems to make little sense to those who haven't been taught the scientific method: science is so often "counter-intuitive."
