The white port seems like an ordinary PCI port. The little black thingie could be anything.

An AMR (Modem Riser) port. Fuck all use when it comes to video unless you use it to download new drivers. Not what you wanted to hear either.

Damn forum.

At any rate, I have a 50% correct guess that it is a PCI-x 1x slot.

You know, while you have the sucker open, this would be 3000 times easier if you just gaves us the motherboard name.

This is why you shouldn't buy from Dell ;)

It seems that the AGP is onboard like the video card and thus, not upgradeable. If you want a better video card, you'll have to get a new computer.

The only other solution is to get a PCI video card. You'll have to make sure you can return it because if its onboard AGP, you may run into compatibility issues.

Jimusopolis is right...

There is really no way for you to upgrade and that slot is likely a modem slot.

PS - never buy Dell.

I would have guessed that too but I see no 8x or 16x
Guessing with the lack of them an AMR if I remember right ... useless for video

(even a pci-e 1x is useless for video)

If you want a better video card, you'll have to get a new computer.

Technically, he only needs a new motherboard, one equipped with AGP and compatible with his processor. I can't tell what type of processor he has though - how old is this computer? If it's seriously out of date, which I have to admit it does appear to be, it probably won't be worth it in terms of performance to upgrade anything. If the processor and RAM are still workable, however, then a motherboard upgrade might be an option if the money's not there for a whole new computer.

The only other solution is to get a PCI video card. You'll have to make sure you can return it because if its onboard AGP, you may run into compatibility issues.

This (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814139166) is the best I could find. A GeforceFX 5700 LE in PCI. Performance will be pretty awful compared to the newer cards, but it'll still be alot better then an Intel onboard.

PS - never buy Dell.

Can't argue with that. :)

That looks like a GTX 520 motherboard to me, with a PCI express port, if so, it's a business application setup, you're not supposed to change the video setup, it will run windows office and all the databases you want all day long, just never ask it to try and play a game with it, it won’t like it. If it was the GX620 it would have a PCIx16 slot and you could add an aftermarket video card, but I don’t think that’s what you have there by that picture you’re showing us.

Secondary note, if you want to play any games more visually complicated than minefield, don't buy a Dell Corporate Desktop.

*snip*

It looks brand new to me, I think its a BTX motherboard, unless the DEll letters on the system are upside down AND backwards, it can't be an ATX system because the case door is on the wrong side for an ATX because if your turned the picture over, the slots would then be on top where the power supply should be on the ATX systems, but it's not, the slits are on the bottom, it must be a BTX system and ass backwards to your and my way of thinking.

Good call. I apologize for my mistake - I've never actually poked around inside of a PC with a BTX motherboard, so I didn't recognize it.

I googled "GTX 520 Dell", and couldn't find anything, but I did find this (http://www1.us.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/optix_gx520?c=us&cs=555&l=en&s=biz&~tab=specstab#tabtop) under "GX 520 Dell". Was the "T" a typo?

anyone interested, its a dimention 3100 and i've done some more poking around and the dell site claims that its a PCIe x1 slot.

Thought the BTX standard was killed? (though it makes me sad ... better cooling)

Well it looks like it could be like I said But its usualy paired with other PCI-E slots a 4 8 or 16x

If it is a 1x it is useless for videocards

ok so not in that one. if i wanted, could i run one through the other pci bus though?

Some can ... though you have to watch there are two major voltage ranges make sure the one yours is in matches up with the one you are looking for

This is more touchy then in other slots cause video-cards need more power then standard PCI devices do ... so your pci slots have to be able to provide that

You should not burn things up if ya pick wrong but it may just not work
Hate to waste money or time

Maybe BTX would have been more successfull if there was some AMD-compatable versions. Although some of the ideas from BTX have been adjusted to work with ATX (cooling ducts, horizontal fans on cpu coolers, etc.)

Yeah ... I wish the ram direction change would have happened too ... beautifull alowing air to flow front to back so much easier

That would be nice. Maybe if you spam the fuck out of ASUS' and DFI's email inboxes, you my just get your wish.

EDIT: That is not a bad idea though. Complain to the motherboard makers to modify ATX until it becomes BTX.

How do you feel about the proposed moving the PSU from top to bottom?

I am mixed
With quiet setups I can see how it would be an advantage because it allows you to cool the PSU easy

But most high end PSU's have built in Venting capability (like my thermaltake which has a 120 mill fan) that actualy helps cooling by venting the case
In that case it would be most efficent on the top
