I just called the cops on my neighbors....

In case some of you don't know, my city, well actually my entire state is on fire .

We are having wildfires like crazy lately and about 12 popped up today alone in my city. The air quality around here is so bad because of the smoke that the fire dept. has asked us to stay inside unless he tells us to move (which would mean that our houses are next in line for fire). It could be very soon when we get the evac notice since the winds are high and the fires aren't very far from my house (just a few miles).

My idiot neighbors are outside, right now, in the smoke, setting off illegal fireworks. Roman Candles to be specific. So, I called the cops.

I can hear sirens now, I am hoping it's the cops and not the fire dept. (because if it's the fire dept. then we have to go soon)

So, my neighbors in addition to being idiots, are crazy violent. I have had to call the cops on them more than once and I think this time might really piss them off.

What would you have done in my situation?

So, there's a wildfire and these idiots are setting off illegal fireworks? I'd call the cops immediately, since they're risking setting another wildfire and destroying even more property.

And if they're violent, and setting off illegal fireworks, they're probably drinking too...which only increases the risk of dumbass stuff happening Perhaps you can get them on enough things to be put in jail for a while or evicted from their property.

Use your sprinklers to hose the neighbors down when they are lighting the fireworks. Of course if they are violent have another friend(a big one) stand behind you as you hose them down. Then they might get the point.

It was the fire dept. (the sirens) it seems that not only my idiot neighbors are doing fireworks, the people in the house behind them also were setting off fireworks, and there is a small grass fire behind my house. Hopefully my neighbors will cool it with the fire works while the "authorities" are out here dealing with the grass fire, and hopefully also that fire won't spread into my yard. This has not been a good day.

meh. I am not really worried about what will happen if the fire burns down my house. It's just stuff, what I am worried about is the fact that my car broke down Friday night, and none of my extended family can get into my neighborhood to get us if we get evacuated, so I may have to hitch a ride with my idiot neighbors. :(

I'm not in direct line of the fires (more in the path of any tsunami that wanders onto the East coast) but I'm close enough to be finding my asthmatic lungs pretty challenged by the smell of them.

You did entirely the right thing. Those fireworks could set off a wildfire. That's why they're illegal, after all. If the entire suburb went up and you'd kept your mouth shut, it'd be their fault, not yours, but you still wouldn't feel all that great about it, would you?

The cops are amazingly discreet about neighbour disputes. They wouldn't mention who'd called them and, after all, if the idiots are setting off fireworks, you're not the only person in the whole neighbourhood with ears to hear them, are you? Yours may have been only one of several calls.

The sprinkler suggestion is useful. You don't have to turn it on them. Just be very obvious about hosing your fence and your roof and your dried-up lawn (if the fieries haven't already told you to cut water use).

Or, if you haven't already, get out with a ladder and clear your gutters (if some of the rubbish falls on their side, pity, but you can't help the prevailing winds, can you?).

If the fieries have told you to stay inside it's already pretty serious, but I don't think they object if you make it clear you're doing your own bit of fire prevention.

By the way, IT'S RAINING in Newcastle! Not much, but anything's good.

Edit: I just saw your later post. Ignore all the above. Do you have any other neighbours? Even if you don't know them, anyone would help in a situation like that.

OKCFD has put out the fire behind my house, they found "evidence" of fireworks in both yards and the cops are on the way to arrest people, I offered to keep the kids at my house, but they said they have to take them into DHS custody (since the parents are being arrested on charges of illegal fireworks and possesion of drugs) good news is that extended family will be able to pick the kids up tonight, so they don't have to spend much time away from people they know. I really feel like a bad person. :(

The fire that was threatening my house is almost contained, but the one across town is still burning pretty bad, my family in the Norman area may end up coming to stay with me if they get evacuated (that is if the FD lets them through the road block) if by some chance we all get evacuated, I found a hotel in a safe area that has rooms ready for all of us and Wi-Fi so if I make it out with my laptop then I can post to let you know that I am okay (if anyone cares)

Also, I wasn't allowed to keep their dog for them and she has been taken into custody and they are waiting for animal control, I swear every single govt. agency is on my block now. I feel so bad. :(

Unfortunately, some of the people on this post are not taking this seriously. Even worse, it is dead serious as some people have lost everything and even died because of this weather. I hope and pray all works out well for you and the fire doesn't spread to your yard or home.

YOU JUST STOP THAT RIGHT NOW! Did you force them to set off fireworks? Did you sell them drugs?

Sure you're sorry for their kids and their dog, but they're THEIR kids and THEIR dog. THEY did this to them, not you. You don't even know that it was your phonecall that got the response, anyway. If the fire brigade came first, it's likely that someone else phoned them and the brigade told the cops.

YOU DONE GOOD, got that?

Edit again: I put in the news about rain in Newcastle because I was assuming you were in Australia (I took the bit about OKCFB as meaning, "Okay, the Canberra Fire Brigade ..."), and wanted to reassure you there was rain on the way. Our state is on fire, too.

Well, I have no problem with shooting off illegal fireworks where I live, unless it's really dry. I was out there last night, in the pouring rain, lighting off morters, bottlerockets, roman candles, and firecrackers. If it wer as dry here as it is there I wouldn't have touched them, but considering the creek on the edge of my property has risen, and in jsut a few hours we got four inches of rain, I'm not terribly worried about starting a fire.

It was pretty dry on the 4th of July (nothing like it is now) and I didn't call the cops on them, but tonight I was just worried since something like a quarter of a million acres are on fire already and the winds are sitting at about 30 with gusts up to 50, that they may be endangering my kiddos. I sure wasn't going to go talk to them about it. Maybe if they were sane I would have, but these people are about as scary as you can imagine, and they were obviously under the influence.

Yes, I'm fighting the "bad dog neighbor thing" also, but that is minor compared to setting off fireworks during this drought. Why do people think the governor has declared a burn ban? I haven't seen any fireworks for sale in the Tulsa area this December, but that doesn't mean people don't have them. Fortunately, I didn't hear any last night and don't hear any tonight. They fight Pitts, not in their yard anymore since I called the cops on them this summer ( I was afraid for my dog's saftey since they are mad dogs, and can jump the fence ect.)

I have called the pound more than once on their dogs for being in my yard, I am scared they are going to attack my kids (not because they are Pitts, but because they are Pitts that have been conditioned to attack)

anyway, things have gotten quiet over there, I think the cops took most of them away, I am still under the impression that I could be evacuated at any time, the fire woman I was talking to says that a fire has been reported near the state capitol so they have to move some man-power in that direction which will leave less to work on the fire that is now 2 miles from me, and even though they say they have it contained she says there are hot spots, and that it's still plenty dangerous.

Sweetie, you did the right thing. They were endangering not only their children, but the entire neighborhood. And if they were doing drugs, then they are unfit parents and deserved to have their children taken away. Don't beat yourself up over this, Smunkee. Calling the cops was the right thing to do. Sorry to hear you are having the same problem we are. She is in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and I'm in a suburb of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Right now the weather is very very dry (low humidity) and the winds are quite high. We are about 20 or more inches below normal for the year for rain. Very bad situation because with the high winds any grass fire will spread very rapidly. We have fire crews in Oklahoma from surrounding states to help with the fires.

There is absolutely nothing for you to feel bad about.

You mentioned you have a husband and kids.

What if the morons had set fire to your house? What if your house had caught fire? How long would it have taken the FD to get to you? They are real busy tonight. What if these mokes had set your house on fire and no one would have come to your rescue because the firefighters are all busy?

What of your kids had died because of that?

These retards "did evince a depraved disregard for human life" and would have been charged with criminal negligance and involluntery manslaughter, probobly, and would have spent howver long that gets you in OK in jail.

If they were setting off fireworks in the desert somewhere and the only danger was that they might blow thier fingers off, fine- but they put your life and lives of you family in danger. There is no reason to feel bad for these hairbags.

Also, OKC cops have the paitience and forbearance of saints. If it would have been me I would have worked them over for an hour.

It has been warm, too warm for Jan. I think it got up to like 78F today, and we are like 20inches under on rainfall. :(

the ground is so dry that when my dog went out to pee earlier the dirt soaked it up and it was dry in like 30 seconds. It scared the crap out of me, I expected that in Arizona, but not here, not in January.

Dry, very dry and windy. Extremely high fie danger. No rain in sight. Currently 21:39 hours, 64 degrees, winds 24, with a humidity of 24%. No rain in the forcast for the entire week and high fire danger for the week. Not good.

Okay, so now I am scared. The fire that was the big threat is no longer a threat, and they say I can go to bed. (the rest of the house is asleep, I was staying up in case we got evacuated)

but, the news just said that there was a fire started near here by a car backfiring. The fire is out, but I am now afraid to go to sleep, if a car driving by can start a fire, then I am super scared.

There is nowhere safe for me to go, the whole state is dry and windy. I might stay up all night to try to keep an eye on things.

We're having the same problem down here in Texas. Very dry, long drought, high winds and high temps. They evacuated the entire city of Nocona tonight (pop 3,213) and the town Ringold has been reportedly leveled. Both of those are just to the west of me. Not a pretty picture down here right now.

Thanks, Celtlund and Smunkeeville. My house is so urban we wouldn't normally consider ourselves as being in a bushfire area, though the experience of Canberra a couple of years ago has made everyone think twice. But temperatures were topping 49 degrees in our lounge-room yesterday and it's been the same throughout New South Wales. This is the second hottest summer in approx 200 years, and we've been drought-stricken for a long time.

We're getting the smoke from across the harbour today, but the level of threat has lessened slightly Statewide because the temperatures have fallen back into the 30s.

The volunteers from the Bush Fire Brigades and the State Emergency Services are on full-time. I think this season there's been one death among them, a man who had a heart-attack, and I don't think we've lost anyone else yet.

Your choices are

1) Go to sleep so you're well rested in case you have to cut and run in the middle of the night, or

2) Stay awake as long as you can, becoming more paranoid and less rational every hour, so when you finally fall asleep you either cannot be woken up or if you can wake up, you're a wreck.

My advise: pack an emergency bag, leave it by the front door, and get as much rest as you can. Sleep now because you may not be able to sleep lter. Time is now precious; use it as efficiently as possible.

Good luck and I'll keep you in my prayers.

Smunkeeville, you may want to sleep in shifts with someone you trust to make sure you all bug out in an emergency. If my memory about the geography serves, then if you have to make a run for it, I'd guess your best bet would be east toward Arkansas--the area between Fort Smith and Fayetteville is at a higher elevation and is usually a bit more damp this time of year. North Louisiana is also probably a safe bet if you can get that far--Shreveport's where I'm thinking of.

Oh yeah, and not only were you right to call the cops, you'd have been within your rights to shoot them in my opinion. They were endangering public safety.

Update. Firefighters from Alabama, North Carolina, Arkansas, and Tennessee are helping put out wildfires in Oklahoma. Red Cross and Salvation Army asking for donations to help people who have lost their homes in Oklahoma and Texas. Big fire in Muskogee, OK.

My husband is awake now, so I am going to sleep. My dog won't go outside anymore even though the smoke is starting to clear out, so I suppose I will put him out in the garage. It's kinda scary when the dog doesn't even want to go outside.

I would loot from them. The whole fire thing is similar to what happened in Southern California in 2003. Except I think that it is more populated here, or people just like CA better :D

From what you and others have been saying, probably not. Too dry for that little bit to be helpful. What would probably be better is to fill every container you can find with water for use in wetting down the house if the fire gets too close. Most house fires seem to start from embers blown from existing fires.

Maybe I'll just keep the hoses ready in the garage just in case. Probably better to hook them up. With the winds this high I might not have time to get them out of the garage and hook them up.

Another town being evacuated. Nothing real close to me yet.

Damn, dude! Get as much ready as you can ... lay out the hoses, making sure they aren't near anything flammable, remove all incendiary liquids from the vacinity, mow the lawn down to nothing but stubble, maybe even cut away any bushes near the house ... take nothing for granted, sez me. :)

Yeah, get his ass handed to him in a special election and put the state deeper into debt. He got a special bond issue two years ago, and now wants another $25 to 27 billion in debt because he won't talk about raising taxes. His approval ratings are in Bush territory--mid thirties--but he knows what he's doing, I guess.

Wow, those are some rough pictures to see. Just try to find some humor in the first picture, its Jay leno's head on a buffolo or something, yeah i know it was a pitiful attempt at laughter.

I see these fires on the Tv sometimes, and i never really thought of the people, but reading this thing has kinda made me think about you guys more. I mean those dumb neighbors ontop of the fires nearby. I'd start filling up pitches of water and keeping them around the house, just incase. Stay safe guys, even though where i am i wont run into these problems, but if i were you, just try to relax as much as you can, and do whatever the hell those firefighters tell you to do.

Best of luck to you guys out there.

While you're on the 'precautions" thing: block up the drainpipes that come down from your roof, make sure the roof guttering's clear and then water the roof so the water goes into the guttering.

Exactly the same. You aren't in Texas or OK are you?

Edit again: I put in the news about rain in Newcastle because I was assuming you were in Australia (I took the bit about OKCFB as meaning, "Okay, the Canberra Fire Brigade ..."), and wanted to reassure you there was rain on the way. Our state is on fire, too.

so is NSW. not sydney, but Goldburn or somewhere. but its like 44 degrees (celcuis) here.

I lived through the night, one of my neighbors is already out on bail (it's about 8:50a here) the other one was denied bail in nightcourt because he had warrents out.

I had a lot of trouble sleeping last night because of all the sirens, apparently there were a lot of small fires around. We should be safe for now, unless another big fire starts.

My friend that works with FEMA (works with, he heads up a local charity) says that there are about 30 families that were displaced last night and can't go back to their neighborhood for at least 2 days (because of saftey issues) so, my daughters and I are seeing if we have anything they can use ( extra clothes, toys for the kids, ect.)

I am going to head to Guthrie probably Wednesday and help out with the Red Cross there, I wanted to go today, but I couldn't.

I may hit the local fire dept. and see if they need/want anything.

you were right to call the cops on them. you did a service to everyone, including them by protecting their posessions and loved ones.

And stop looking at pictures of the fire. It'll keep you up (more) at night;)

anyway, I hope you'll keep us posted. I would say you should have everyone pack an emergency bag...clothes, valuables (jewelery and the like), and memories (baby/wedding pictures, or better, the negatives if you have them). Keep it as light as possible, but remember that a house can be rebuilt, posessions repurchased...photographs can't be retaken.

I hope you and your family (and all of you in that area and your families) are okay! Keep us updated.

Good advice. MY irreplaceable stuff is in a well concealed fireproof safe.

We also have a "grab bag" with clothing, bottled water, toiletries in case we had to leave in a hurry.
Keep your car well maintained and full of fuel so it doesnt let you down when you need it most.

I have a pressure washer. I would take it outside, hook it up to the water service, and start it up.

Then I would hose them and their fireworks down.
