Region-Free DVD Drives

Dissonant Cognition

I'm currently looking for a DVD drive for my computer. Now, I have long sworn to never buy a DVD player or DVD disc so long as the region locking scheme is used. However, I run Linux and have DVD player software that allows me to select whatever region I want (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_freedom). Also, I had always been under the impression that DVD drives meant for installation in a computer system were region-free.

Then I find out that such drives have been including region locking since 1999. I've also read that some drives are still made region-free or can be made region-free using firmware updates or other utilities.

So, does anyone know of any modern computer DVD drives that are region-free or can be made so?

pretty much all are region free, buy one from a warehouse stocklist, they import them and as they get them in bulk they ship to many contries and there is no region control, my philips drive has none atall, i can set it but only four time so i left it region free!! :D if you buy a computer in shop they set the region!!
