Cats vs. dogs

Whom do you prefer? I marginally like dogs more than I like cats, because they are more intelligent, they are social animals and they attach more to their owners. However, in the upcoming poll I'll choose "both", because that preference is very slight. What about you?

P.S. I have one dog and one cat, and they're both adorable in their own way.

Sorry. I did it because of my dog. The New Year's Day firecrackers drove him mad with fear last night, the poor thing. He's a very sensitive creature, although you couldn't discover it from his appearence. ;)

Dogs of course.

While I like both dogs and cats, I like cats better. Dogs, as pack animals, have behaviors that I find annoying, like face-licking (which a subservient dog does to the alpha dog) and jumping up and down in excitement whenever it's pleased, which seems to be all the time. These pack oriented behaviors make them easier to train than cats because their motivations are clear. But cats, being less social (they aren't unsocial - if you observe a colony of feral cats, you will see that), are more inclined to behave in ways that humans call dignified. They are also cleaner than dogs, at least in ways that I appreciate, and they smell better. They are less excitable and, while harder to train, they are quite intelligent (my cat Clyde learned to open the refrigerator door so he could snatch leftovers).

Dogs are more intelligent??!! I don't think so...

Dogs are unable to fend for themselves and depend much more on their owners then cats do. Cats are definately smarter ie. hunting etc.
I find that cats are much more affectionate than dogs but are treated worse. Thats what I think anyway....

Ferrets are a bit quicker, but only because cats realize we will do whatever they want so they don't bother.

I've had both and I like having either animal for a pet. Both had to be put to sleep. The cat was just about 2 months ago (she was 18) but the dog was like 5 years ago (and she was 13 then). I'd like to have a dog more so now because I haven't had one in years.

I suppose it depends on what kind of mood I am in, there are times I really miss my cat, you know sitting on my lap purring. Most of the time when I have a dog it's a really big dog, and can't sit on your lap. My dog now weighs about 80lbs, so he can't even really get on the couch without getting in trouble, although today he has been rather cuddly.

I guess if I have to choose, then Dogs.

They are cuddly and they can play and they can chew up your enemies. :p

1) Welcome to the forum.

2) Being able to fend for yourself is not an accurate indication of intelligence. From this point of view, the humans are the most 'handicapped', and yet we are the smartest of all the animals (or at least that's what we like to think :)).

Well if a dogs owner died the dog would, like a fool (however loyal it might be) sit there and wait to be fed etc. While a cat would hunt and get it's own food.

Also my cat who's now six would fetch clothes pegs and bring them back to you when she was a kitten.. lol... Now she's so lazy she needs a sniff of catnip to get her going! :p

Dogs, as for the comment that cats are smarter because of hunting... Look at wolves, they hunt in packs and each one know's it's job, they're very efficient at what they do. They're much better for making one feel better and aren't near as self serving as cats who look only for a pet here and there and food. My dog has always known when I'm sad and listens a hell of alot better than any cat ever has. I use to ride my uncle's dog when I was little for entertainment, one fo the funnest things to ever do! Try doing it with a cat...

And my Granddad's cats are in the house all night, and in the winter all day too (to cold outside *lol*)

Thats lucky for you because German Hunters 'can' kill predators...

German Shepards would drag their wounded handlers out of the way of danger in Nam and they were not trained to do this.

An intelligent animal needs to learn a certain behaviour. The more primitive a creature is, the less matters the 'learning' part and the more matter its instincts. Dogs have to learn from somebody how to hunt, otherwise they remain as harmless as a little lamb. The cats are more instinctual in their approach to hunting. => dogs are smarter than cats.

But this is not a discution about which animal is smarter, only about which one do you like more. You can like an animal even if it's not the smartest in the world (I don't think I'd like a gorilla as a pet, even though they are smarter than the dogs :p).

Well.... no.... just... just because you 'can' jump from a building you don't 'do' it. It's the same with the Hunters. Why would they kill a cat?

The only thing threatening my cat is the traffic. We lost 2 cats that way :(

Slightly off-topic, and in response to the various comments on the relative intelligence of dogs viz-a-viz cats: We're talking about two different types of intelligence here. Dogs hunt as part of a team and cats hunt alone, generally. Cats are not necessarily instinctive hunters, they learn techniques as kittens from their mothers; a cat who has had the opportunity to grow up with his/her mother is a more effective hunter than one taken from her early (although my Bonnie and Clyde were taken from their mother at six weeks and early on taught themselves to hunt mice as a team).

Also, the notion that dogs are more intelligent because they are easier to train is not true. Dogs are easier to train because they want to please the alpha member(s) of the pack, in this case, humans - it's a response to knowing their place in the pack. Cats are harder to train because there's less in it for them - no pack, no place to maintain, no alpha to please.

Cats.
They're independant, don't crave attention 24/7, you don't have to let them outside to do their business (in fact, you can train them to use the toilet) they don't make a lot of noise at all hours of the night and they're affectionate on their own terms rather than being a drooling mess trying to make you happy.
Plus, when they're in a playful mood, they're more fun to play with and there's a lot less drool involved.

Most (though not all) cats don't scratch people for no reason. So my question is was that cat known for being mean, and if not what was your kid doing to the cat? Cats aren't like dogs, they don't take teasing lying down (as a lot of dogs might). So if your kids can't handle cats, you might want to teach them to leave cats alone.

Myself, I like both cats and dogs, but cats are better for my life style. And by that, I mean I'm lazy, and cats are more independent after kittenhood than dogs.

I think that's why the majority seem to prefer the cats. They say "I like cats 'cause they're independent", but in reality they mean "I like them because I don't have to invest so much time in them". By these standards, a snake would be even better: just throw it a chicken once a week and you're done. ;) But of course, the snake is not cute and fluffy, so the cat wins. :)

Our cat used to be like that in the beginning, from the same reason. She didn't want to remain alone in a room, so she followed us everywhere in the house. Now she only moves from the bed if she wants to eat or to... to go outside. :) Or to play. I don't know why, but she always gets active in the morning and in the evening. Maybe it has to do with the best time for hunting?

:D Yeah, but see, with cats you get a happy medium between dog-traits and snake-traits. They're fairly independent, but they can also be quite affectionate and make a nice, fuzzy lap warmer.

Also, they don't drool. I can't stand it when big dogs drool everywhere.

However, I do like snakes. Though the reptile that I really want is a chameleon. I am in love with their silly little feet.

Chameleon feet? What's so great about them? :D

A looong looong time ago, my father brought home a little turtle he had picked from a construction site. We used to feed it pieces of hard boiled egg, sprinckled in a bowl of water. The turtle would swim and bite the pieces in the water, I was quite fascinated by its behaviour. After that, winter came and the turtle started hibernating (I think). Alas, my parents didn't know a turtle can hibernate and thought it had died, so they threw it away (which means they probably killed it :( ).

And that's about all the contact I've ever had with reptiles. :D

Cats are intelligent (mine can open all but three of the doors in my house), they are aloof, they do not care what you do so long as they get foor, whether you let them outside to catch birds, mice, bunnies and squirrels, or you will dish it out to them.

They have all the quialities is respect, cleverness, lazyness, and...um, sleepyness?

Dogs are more fun to have around in my opinion, and are generally more companionable than cats, although I'm sure some would disagree. Which is more fun? Throwing a stick for the dog to fetch or throwing the cat?
Having grown up with dogs I'm used to their habits, foibles and character, but with cats I've had little time with, so my empathy towards them is a little thin - and so I suppose would be the deciding factor in the majority of peoples responses of which one is best. I'm sure if I grew up with cats I might be a bit more well-adjusted to them.
