I fear his time is coming soon. His wife just died and that probably took a lot out of him. Too many times, it drains the will to live out of a person. He and Anne Bancroft were married for ever.

Mel Brooks, (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000316/) for those of us who don't keep track of celebrities.

Is that wrong?

I agree! It's my favorite, with Blazing Saddles following at a close second.

I prefer "History of the World: Part I," but that's probably because I'm Jewish. If you ask a Jew, most will list that as #1 because of the number of jokes in it that you have to have a knowledge of Judaism to get.

I love the Moses thing. "All pay head to the lord Jehova. I bring onto you these 15 *drops talbet* Oyyyy. Ten! Ten Commandments for all to obey."

I also love the 2nd appearance of Moses where he spouts off Yiddush curses after being robbed.

I love Jackie Mason's cameo as one of the Jews being tortured during the Inquisition scene. (Only Mel Brooks could do a scene on the Inquisition and make it hilarious.)

Who loved the Roman scene? The Vnemployment Insvrance scene was hilarious. "Did you kill anybody last week?" "Look this is your last week. Either kill somebody or we change your status."

Oh yeah. Who can forget "It's good to be the king?"

Or coming soon: "History of the World Part II". See Hitler on Ice. A viking funeral, and Jews in space.

--------------

"Blazing Saddles" is a close 2nd. "We're going to kill all the men"

"You spare the women?"

"No we rape the shit out of them."

or

"People have been stampeded and cattle raped."

or

"The sheriff is a ni*gong*"

"What did he say?"

"I think he said the sheriff is near"

"No dagnabit, the sheriff is a ni*gong*"

Ah, I forgot about that. Please ignore my apparently tasteless joke.

Dark Helmet: What the hell am I looking at? When does this happen in the movie?
Colonel Sandurz: Now. You're looking at now sir. Everything that happens now, is happening now.
Dark Helmet: What happened to then?
Colonel Sandurz: We passed then.
Dark Helmet: When?
Colonel Sandurz: Just now. We're at now, now.
Dark Helmet: Go back to then!
Colonel Sandurz: When?
Dark Helmet: Now.
Colonel Sandurz: Now?
Dark Helmet: Now!
Colonel Sandurz: I can't.
Dark Helmet: Why?
Colonel Sandurz: We missed it.
Dark Helmet: When?
Colonel Sandurz: Just now.
Dark Helmet: When will then be now?
Colonel Sandurz: Soon.
Dark Helmet: How soon?
Video Operator: Sir!
Dark Helmet: What?
Video Operator: We've identified their location.
Dark Helmet: Where?
Video Operator: On the Desert Moon
Colonel Sandurz: Soon we will have them.
Dark Helmet: WHO???

Mel Brooks is my hero. There's just something about his movies that is just plain wrong! I will say that "Silent Movie" was the one time I had ever gone to see a movie and was glad I knew Latin, i.e. his parody of the MGM logo that replaced "ars gratia artis" with "ars est pecunia".

Blazing Saddles rocks.

Buddy Bizarre: Cut, cut, cut, this is a closed set.
Taggart: Piss on you, I'm working for Mel Brooks.

Bart: I better go check out this Mongo character.
Jim: Oh no, don't do that.
Bart: Why not?
Jim: If you shoot him, you'll just make him mad.

Hedley Lamarr: Meeting adjourned! Oh, I am sorry sir I didn't mean to overstep my bounds, you say that.
Governor Lepetomane: What?
Hedley Lamarr: Meeting is adjourned.
Governor Lepetomane: It is?
Hedley Lamarr: No, you say that governor!
Governor Lepetomane: What?
Hedley Lamarr: Meeting is adjourned!
Governor Lepetomane: It is?
Hedley Lamarr: Here sir, play with this!

Spaceballs has always been my old favorite, but every one of his films is great.

Dark Helmet: Careful you idiot. I said across her nose, not up it!
Laser Gunner: Sorry sir. Doing my best.
Dark Helmet: Who made that man a gunner?
Major Asshole: I did sir. He's my cousin.
Dark Helmet: Who is he?
Colonel Sandurz: He's an asshole sir.
Dark Helmet: I know that!....What's his name?
Colonel Sandurz: That is his name sir, Major Asshole
Dark Helmet: and his cousin?
Colonel Sandurz: He's an asshole too sir: Gunner's mate, first class, Philip Asshole
Dark Helmet: How many assholes we got on this ship anyhow?
The Crew: YO!!!!
Dark Helmet: I knew it, I'm surrounded by assholes
[Dark Helmet pulls his mask down]
Dark Helmet: Keep firing assholes!!

They used to have to cut that scene when they ran it on TV. I guess they thought hilarious farts were too vulgar.

Is that wrong?Seen it. Different from the '68er (because it's the "film of the musical of the film") but IMHO (YMMV) it's worth seeing.

If you have the time, stay until the end of the credits (the very end) for a nice-to-see end-bit. (Not essential, if you've got to get home to watch the TV or something, and I couldn't guarantee you that it's the funniest thing ever, but how can make up your own mind about it until you've seen it..?)

of the ones you mentioned i picked blazing saddles because that was the first and funniest of the one's i've seen, although young fraunkenschtien was pretty darn good too. as for favorites that's a toss up between b.s. and yellow beard. (did mell create that one or am i just thinking he did because it had marty 'eye gore' feldman in it). another (i think) of his, not often mentioned, and perhapse in many ways a 'lesser work', would be the secret policeman's other ball (or was that firesign or the pythons who made that i one, i forget, i just remember seeing it on a double bill with one of his others, sometime back in the early 80s when i was living up in portland oregon)
