My colleague is a devout Christian who goes to church regularly.

He is also the most miserable and tight-arsed bastard I have ever met! How does that happen?
Is this sort of gross hypocrisy common?

It goes hand in hand a lot.
Just for fun, go to any church on sunday and have a look around. The faces will tell you a lot.
I don't have any quick explanation as to why that happens, though.

Depends on what particular flavour of Christianity he samples regularly. Lots of them have a real bitter aftertaste. However, I've found one that leaves me satisfied and sometimes over-eager for more, and I daresay I'm neither tight-arsed nor miserable (except when my boyfriend deserves it from me).
By and large, though, if you're sticking to those who simply go with the "Christian" monicker rather than one particular sect.....yes, they're going to be uptight poo-asses with nothing better to do than rain on everybody else's parades.

Christianity has nothing to do with it. Some of the most miserable and tight-arsed people I've ever met were atheists, some were Christians, etc. Other than the miserable and tight-arsed factor, there was nothing they all shared in common.

True, but my point is that miserable and tight-arsed bible-bashers that do not follow their own doctrines are hypocrites. Surely miserable and tight-arsed atheists are simply just miserable tight-arses!

No, just because you don't have Christ in your life doesn't mean you're not being a hypocrite for being tight-arsed and miserable.
And just because you DO have Christ in your life doesn't make you a bible-basher.
And if you keep up at this rate, you'll get a reputation that will be nearly impossible to shake. I've seen it happen.

Well are you talking about christians or roman catholics? because there is a lot of difference between one and another.
Christians (with all due respect of course) are more devout to religion that we RC are, they are somehow close-minded, really fanatic, most of them think that everything that happens was on god's plan, RC decide, God is only there to help him, Christ says to us "decide don't be just an echo of my words".
