Don't see that changing any time soon.

Me now: fiscally responsible, socially libertarian

Me fifteen years ago: fiscal libertarian, social conservative.

Funny what leaving a fundamentalist church can do for your politics, huh.

Now I'm just an extreme personal rights, moderate economic liberal.

I am socially liberal except for on abortion, gay rights, privacy rights, affirmative action, school sponsored prayer, capital punishment, gun ownership rights, school vouchers, and welfare. I used to be socially conservative.

Well I suppose when I was 3-4 years old I believed my house to be the whole of the world. Does that count?

However, no. Sorry. Ever since the day I realised that there were kids at school with less money than me for lunch, I started taking extra quarters to give to them. That eventually led to me being one of the strongest advocates to Governor George W. Bush concerning free lunch program reforms in the State of Texas.

I've always been the "if you got it, share it" kind of person.

I can't remember a time when I wasn't. I also can't remember a time when I didn't believe that every other living, breathing human being should have the exact same rights and freedoms as I do.

I dunno .... guess I found my niche at an early age and stuck with it.

I've just drifted further to the left. I"m not a communist, but I'm not really a moderate, either. There really aren't any political parties in the US that fit me.

My views are more or less consistent with Melkor, though often times for different reasons. But regardless, I pretty much agree with his stances on most issues.

I used to be an authoritarian U.S. Republican, then became a moderate liberal Republican, then for a while considered myself a centrist.

Then, after a bit more education and much more research, I am now what you would call a Classic Liberal, and am quite content with this ideology.

At this point in time I am a liberal who hates to be called a Democrat. I am thankful for true conservatives because they help to counterbalance liberal reform happening too frequently. But the most hated group for me is neoconservatives. Unfortunately, they're running my beloved country's two main political parties' agendas right now, along with business interests. So mostly my political views right now look a lot like the bottom of a shotglass:(

I hope you're allowed to vote for yourself because I just did :D

That said, why did you bother to seperate me and Lewrockwellia? Not only are our politics nearly functionally identical, I haven't seen him post here in quite some time, although I suppose I might be looking in the wrong places.

Anyway, to answer your question, I've been an Objectivist my entire life: I just know what to call it now. I've always had something of an instinctive distrust for people who change their minds all the time and flip-flop on every issue under the sun , especially when it comes to ethics. If you find yourself changing your mind about the way the world works every five years, you might want to ask yourself why. I get the impression that a lot of people try a [i]little too hard to be open-minded; and as a result we sometimes end up with rabid Trotskyites-turned-Neocons, like today's Republican party; not to mention the epistemological parasites which have preceded them throughout countless generations.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: great philosophers don't tell you how to think; they tell you what you already know. One should not enter the realm of ethics determined to change their mind at every turn; no consistency can possibly follow from such a state of intellectual chaos. I'm not saying one should be completely abhorrent of new ideas, and I'm not trying to suggest that one should stick to the political beliefs held in one's youth, but there's a logical middle ground here and it's always struck me as a bit ridiculous to reach desperately for identity after identity.

My political orientation, ever since it was coherent, has always been left-of-center; I have drifted leftwards over time, and currently find myself hovering between anarcho-communism (based on my ethical philosophy) and radical democratic socialism, perhaps on syndicalist lines (based on my political philosophy.)

I'm close enough to objectivist, so I think I'll throw in with you guys. My progression:

Christian conservative
Centrist-leaning Republican
Libertarian Capitalist (moderate to liberal socially, classical liberal economically)

My views are more or less consistent with Melkor, though often times for different reasons. But regardless, I pretty much agree with his stances on most issues.

I used to be an authoritarian U.S. Republican, then became a moderate liberal Republican, then for a while considered myself a centrist.

Yeah, that pretty much sums me up nicely ;)

Politically, I tend go grudgingly for the Republicans.

I'm pretty new, so I don't know most of the people on this board. At any rate, I started out being pretty (okay, really) conservative politically, economically, and socially. Today though, I tend toward a moderate position on the first two categories and a somewhat liberal position on the last with the exception of a few specific issues.

I don't think anyone on the list has beliefs close to mine. But anyway my beliefs developed like this

Social & Fiscal Authoritarian Conservative
Social & Fiscal Libertarian Conservative
Libertarian boardering on Anarcho-capitalist
Social Libertarian Fiscal Moderate

To clarify I should say I support welfare for the those most in need, health care ect, but don't support tax payer funding of arts, sports, excessive military spending, basically anything unneccesary. Also the minimum or no government involvement in peoples personal lives. Anything that prohibts free speech. Thats it with out getting too detailed.

I was initially a Republican.
Then I went Communist.
Then around 2000 I went back to Republican. Had I been able to vote, I would have voted everyone's least favorite American into office.
Then along came 9/11 and then Iraq. I started drifting back to the left.
Now I call myself a Libertarian.

My views haven't changed a whole lot, although my on-going education has resulted in their modification over time. The only real thing that's been changing is the label.

To refuse to change one's political ideas when one knows they are wrong would be to maintain a contradiction. And we all know how how Ayn Rand (and thus, you) feel about contradictions.

I probably started out as a social/moral liberal, with conservative fiscal tendencies.

I used to believe that capitalism could be made to help everybody, and that business could be left to it's own conscience.

I used to believe that 'western' democracy could work on large groups.

Now, I'm probably an extremist in terms of 'social' permissiveness, with socialistic tendencies.

I believe that one of the few responsibilities a government SHOULD have, is regulating business, and that it should stay out of morality entirely.

I'm whatever the fuck I feel like, though I'll just say I'm close to Melkor/Vetalia for the hell of it.

Centrist Democrat
Centrist liberal
Flaming liberal
Libertarian or something around there, I guess

No, I've not taken an economics course or a political science course. No, I've not researched my ideologies - don't really care, something I can look into later. The "love-everyone-equality-tolerance" stuff doesn't fit me, and neither does the "Jesus Christ Superstar" so I'll just stick to individualist libertarianism.

i don't know if i should vote for myself or not
though i am honoured to be in the poll :D

not that i see what the poll has to do with the OP question... which i will now answer:

raised left
went sorta facist and weird when i was about 14
realised what a load of toss the right wing is and swung back left
then went socialist
and then more left
then communist
now some crazy self-styled mix of anarchism, communism, communitariansim, technocracy, direct democracy, regressionsim and a bunch of other shit... hmm when i put it that way, nobody is gonna vote for me :p

(though i ought to make it clear that those are my ideal politics and on a day-to-day basis, i'm just a plain old socialist :))
