A sharia judge in Indonesia has said that the Tsunami took place because women were breaking Islamic law by, among other things, not wearing their head scarves. Kinda like when Falwell said that 9/11 happened because the US was too tolerant of gays and feminists. Now I'm all for free speech, but wouldn't it be nice if free speech extended to shooting idiots like this when they open their mouths.

If not wearing headscarves was so wicked, why didn't the North Sea or Meditteranean get hit by a tsunami?

It would certainly provide some instant gratification, however, driving lunatics underground would probably create a monster out of control and off the radar completely. Better to let them speak and serve as an example of what not to be when one grows up! People like this are valuable teaching tools.

Still, there have to be consequences. Not shooting, of course, but a punch in the nose? Perfectly reasonable. In fact, I believe that there should be a one-free-pop-in-the-beezer rule when people insist on spouting offensive crap they perfectly well know to be offensive crap because they say it to offend. Freedom isn't free, as they are so fond of reminding us. You say that shit, you get popped in the beezer just once, even-steven, we're done. Of course, this would be one pop per offensive comment.

How about, you get your beezer-pop, and the popper gives you a yellow "popped on [this] date for [this remark]" card so you can show it to anyone else who might want to pop you for the same remark later, proving that you've already got your one pop and if they hit you now it would be assault. That should work.

I thought Falwell said that about Katrina. Or did he say it about both?

Maybe both, but definately 9/11. He said that Jesus had lifted his veil of protection because of the gays, pagans, feminists, and abortionists, among others.

LYNCHBURG, Virginia (CNN) -- The Rev. Jerry Falwell said late Thursday he did not mean to blame feminists, gays or lesbians for bringing on the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington this week, in remarks on a television program earlier in the day.

On the broadcast of the Christian television program "The 700 Club," Falwell made the following statement:

"I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the American Way, all of them who have tried to secularize America. I point the finger in their face and say 'you helped this happen.'"

I think that was Phelps, rather than Falwell: he was busy talking crap about South America when that was happening, iirc.

My wife was looking for plants at a nursery.

There is a Jerry Falwell Rose

She said it was rather plain looking. ;)

This guy disgusts me. Claiming that the people who died in the tsunami "deserved it" sickens me. He should spend a week working on reconstruction efforts to apologise for this.

Nahh. He'd just insist that everyone helping out should be subject to sharia law. Better to just bury him up to his neck right below the hgh tide mark and let him see what it's like when you're in a tsunami ... again and again and again. :D

If not wearing headscarves was so wicked, why didn't the North Sea or Meditteranean get hit by a tsunami?

Because Allah isn't heavily worshipped there. Sure there's a lot of Muslims around the meditteranean, but they're of a more permisive stripe. There're a lot of Fundies in South Asia, and so vengeful Allah is a powerful figure there.

There're a lot of Christian Fundies in the South and mid-west of the US, that's why it keeps getting hit with Hurricaines and Tornados.

It's sort of like how my mother prayed for me to focus and do well on my thesis a couple of weeks ago and so he shut down Optimum Online's ability to connect to NCsofts servers, and thus my ability to play City of Heroes. All the Italian and Irish Catholics in Queens make meddlesome naggy Jahovah really powerful so he took out all of the metropolitain and long island City of Heroes players just to get me to focus. I know he did because this problem started on a Friday evening, and as soon as it did he told me that he'd let it be up and running the following Thursday when I was finished. And that's what happened. :)

The moral of the story? Don't worship god's unless they're really permissive. Otherwise they get meddlesome, and you're sure not to like the results. The South could save itself a lot of hardship if they'd just say, screw this Jahovah bullshit. I'm going to start worshipping Bacchus. They'd still get a lot of hurricaines, but after a few bottles of wine, they'd be far less upset about it.
