Don't know.

With this war in Iraq still going on and no real end in sight it has made me think about my loyalty and patriotism.

I was born in the United States and thus an American citizen but I am from two other European nations (Dual citizen).
I never say that I am an American, I say that I am from those two European nations. That is by blood, my people, my homelands and my history.
The American citizenship I got just for being born on U.S. soil, no kin of mine are American.
Now, to my point. It sickens me that America can go to war like it did, it scares me to think that many other nations can do so and the U.N. or any other organization or state can step inn. I do not care about Iraq it's just the best way to make you see. What I care about are my nations.
To the point of loyalty and patriotism, If America would call on me to fight for them I would say no. I am sure many of you Americans would say something to the effect "America, love it or leave it" or "You suck" etc. but why should I fight for you? Just because I was born here? I agree that America has many good things to offer such as education but that can hardly be enough the war in Iraq has hurt you more then you know and it might very well be the start of your fall, granted the fall will be slow to come but it will reach the point were you, America, will lose all you hold close to your hearts. The price will be more then you can bear.
In my oppinion there is one war that was just in United States history and that war was the American Revolution all the other wars could have been settled on peacefull terms. Granted WWII WWI Mexico and 1812 can be debated.
The way I feel about America now, and I did love America once, is more like I am sure the people of the southern states of America felt about the union in the face of civil war and that is I am loyal to my two nations first, the royal line and/or president of my nations second as long as they do not force tyranical rule on my people and nations and fail to fight for the freedoms of their people, Europe third and then the Western World as a whole.
Who am anyways, does litle old me matter to America ore even to the human race you might ask-no I dont and yes I do, the same goes for many of you here.
I will never fight for America/ns so fuck SSS, fuck Bush and fuck the Draft.
Long live a free world of European nations, long live Europe and the rest of the world can kiss our ass except Australia and New Zealand just because I like you guy's so God bless you.

I am so drunk by the way so I dont know if any of what I just said makes sence until tomorrow morning.

Nationalism = bad, no matter which area surrounded by imaginary lines on a map it's directed at.

I'd amend that to Blind Nationalism = bad.

Nothing wrong with loving your country.

Not much point in it, either.

And it makes you easy to manipulate....

Nationalism usually is blind. And I don't see why being against war is unpatriotic. That's just what people say to make you feel bad about not wanting to kill people.

Nothing wrong with loving your country.

Could you please define what you mean by "country" in that sentence ?

The place where you live, pay taxes, vote, fight for laws to be enacted or abolished, strive to make a better place, build roads and bridges, buildings and parks. The place you call home, the place your are proud of when it is doing good, and the place you shed a tear for when it is hurting.

My country is like my family. Sometimes right, sometimes wrong, always loved.

What's wrong with loving that?

All nationalism is. Bad and blind.

Nothing wrong with loving your country.

Apart from the pointlessness.

So basicly:
- Your residence (property)
- Ideals (laws etc)
- Landscape
- Sentiment without any real basis

Query:
If an African would die a miserable death, would that upset you less than the death of a US citizen ? Assume you never met either of them personally.
If yes - is the same true of the death of 10 Africans ?

Apart from it being completely pointless?

I did all that in 3 countries so far, and enjoyed living in all of them (well, apart from the country in which I was born, but that's a personal issue).
I will most likely do so in some more countries before I die. So, should my patriotism move from one country to the next together with me?
Or should I take the sensible and rational approach and just enjoy living in one place, and then the next?

amen. *claps*

countries and boundaries are arbitary and have their roots in primal and thoroughly outdated notions of 'tribes'. surely we are better than that and can move past such artificial constructs that only serve to bring hostility and mechanisms for war and suffering into this world.

besides, the way i see it is that the traditional 'nation-state' has been usurped by the "economy-state" (change of emphasis and power), and that national sovereignity is a thing of the past with the complexly intertwined and interdependent nature of modern world economics and trade. (i want to make a thread about it/my thoughts on that at some point when i find some time)

and i'm not sure if that was 100% on-topic... bah...

I would say that not of the war in Iraq, but of the "War against Terrorism". The day that Americans condoned torture is the day that America died.
Now, it's body might hang on for a few more years - but the concept of America is gone, and it won't come back.

...the royal line and/or president of my nations...
Royal Line? How can you feel loyal to the royal line of a European country? Granted, some of them are nice people - but loyalty?

Long live a free world of European nations, long live Europe and the rest of the world can kiss our ass...
See how you at one time make good points as to the pointlessness of patriotism, and then you make the same mistake, like your genes makes a difference?

I am so drunk by the way so I dont know if any of what I just said makes sence until tomorrow morning.
We'll see. :D
But the times you go all philosophical are the best times to be drunk.
