What sorts of regulations are there for alternative weaponry?

Does anybody know what sort of regulations there are in the US for weapons outside the usual categories?
For instance, what could I do with a coil gun? Could I legally own a coil gun artillery piece?
Or how about energy weapons? What kinds of regulations are out there for experiments with high-powered lasers?

Not that any of this matters at all, it just struck me as amusing.

Lasers are regulated under the safety in the workplace rules, due to their common use in industry. You need several licenses if your output is sufficient to cause blindness, let alone physical damage.

Coil and Rail guns aren't yet regulated - though as soon as somebody uses one as a weapon, that'll change real quick.

And apparently there are a few international agreements regarding the use of lasers and the like in warfare.

Probably because no-one has made a laser that is an effective weapon

Well you're not likely to find much support for use of a neutron weapon.

But the sound pulse and electrostatic weapon field recently found interesting employment .... maybe worth punching up.
