Alas - Some old guys just can't handle their recoil any more...

That’s one hell of a kick back. Here’s the story that goes along with the video:
The gun in the video is basically a "show and tell" custom built on a Thompson Encore (fancy version of the Thompson Contender).
The caliber...
600 Nitro Express. That's right...an elephant gun round in a handgun. The story goes that the guy that built it is some kind of custom gun maker, and built this as an exhibition piece. He takes it to the range with him just to show it off, and the big guy that shot it (in the video) had been bugging the builder to let him shoot it. Now think about this...only until fairly recently (early-mid '80's IIRC) the 600 Nitro Express was hands down the biggest, nastiest, hardest hitting, and heaviest recoiling weapon you could buy. It was designed for one simple purpose...to knock an elephant flat on his a$$. IMO, it was really built as an exhibition piece for guys "compensating"...this cartridge is known for breaking collarbones, arms, shoulders...of the shooter! Think about this...in the gun world they use what is termed as a "recoil index" to kind of give prospective buyers an idea of what agun kicks like. A .30-06 gets a rating of a 1.0, which for many people is about the limit of what they can shoot multiple rounds thru comfortably. A .243 is rated at like a .4, a .270 was like a .8, etc.
The .600 Nitro Express is rated at a 9.4...9.4 times more punishing than a 30-06.
Now I, OTOH, like .50cal single shot pistols. Got a nice one for Black Powder. But I was thinking, since I liked 2200ftlb Casull loads, I might go for somthing a bit more robust.. the Thunder .50BMG

Reportedly, it produces a 3 foot diameter, 6 foot long muzzle flash. Ssssmmmokin! :D

The gun and the shooter are both impressive. Not in the same way, though. That's not a movie of you Syniks, is it?

I would rather have a rifle, IMHO. Pistols are weapons of last resort.
Of course, with that sort of thing, you might not have to hit them. The concussion at close range is probably fearsome, especially with that muzzle brake.

Well, looks like the old Hand-Cannons are back.

We rolled a 2LT about 30ft once when he decided to stand in front of the collomator of an 8" Howitzer... :D
Duh... Safety Stakes are for a reason LT...

I think that's your fascination - you like weapons with huge muzzle brakes because you were in artillery.

I bet I could light your cigarette with the muzzle flash from 10 feet away...

The shot was John Goodman in The Big Lebowski!
I think that's your fascination - you like weapons with huge muzzle brakes because you were in artillery. My Casull didn't have a muzzle brake... But Yeah. Nothing better than hitting a pickup truck in the bed with a single 220lb HE from a couple of klicks away. :p (Spent most of my 13-time in SW or as as an FO...)

...Ok, now that is just un-frakin-necessary. I never did understand the fascination with huge rounds. I mean, I live in Chicago, I'm not exactly tromping through the juingle in a pith helmet or hunting APCs in a combat zone. I dunno, maybe its just me, but I always have more fun firing 9mm a few hundred round of 9mm than a few dozen rounds of 30-06. Then again, maybe I'm just cheap.
Still, the story reminds me of a hilarious trip to the range I took about a year back. I was at a local indoor range that rents pistols(Gunworld, for those of you in the area). They're rentalo centerpiece is a Smith & Wesson 500. So I'm in the range and I notice the guy two stalls down rented it. He had bought a whole box of ammo for it and looked like a kid on Christmas. So he loads it up, takes it in both hands, takes aim, then gets this Dirty Harry look on his face. The mystery man turns, changes his stance, and decided to fire it one handed. A split second and a big boom later, hes heading home with a big gash on the bridge of his nose from the hammer and a $30 dollar box of ammo that hes never gonna use another round of. I couldn't stop laughing...
You just don't get tired of that video....I think I've watched it a good 20 times now. :D

It's about as necessary and useful as a Lamborghini on the Dan Ryan... Yet how many are there in Chicago? (Sold at Fox Valley Motorcars (http://www.foxvalleymotorcars.com/)- Westside 2006 Murcielago in stock - only $326,185 (http://wwwheels.com/cfapps/bcar.cfm?ID=2114628) ) Usefulness is not the issue - gratuitous expenditure of excess disposable income and "Wow" factor is.

Isoceles was a good way to end up with the front sight embedded in your forehead if you used my handloads...

I dunno, the giant guns never appealed to me. I'm happy with my little Cx4 carbine. Low recoil, cheap ammo, decent sights, you can sit at the range and fire it all day, and you can dress it up a bit if thats your thing.
If I were to buy a new gun tomarrow, it'd probably be a Browning A-Bolt with a thumbhole stock.

Even at 220 lbs, that would be a challenge for me to hang onto the damned thing. I've fired virtually every military-style weapon in the US inventory ( and not a few in the inventories of other nations ) since about the early 1950s, but still ... !
EDIT: And by the way ... your title for this thread sucks! :p
