Naming my first pet!

I'm in a pretty jovial mood. Today I just got my biggest shock of the last few weeks, in the form of a suprise Hannukah present. I now am a proud owner of a (probably male) scarlet red Betta fish! I'm pretty anxious, I don't want to hurt the thing. I'm not even really an animal person, but I do feel a strong sense of responsibility for it. It looks similar to this one (sorry, I couldn't get a good picture of mine). Anyhow, any ideas on what should I name it?

I was thinking something to do with fire or water...a diety prehaps?

I usually watch my pets and let them name themselves (although it's not a great plan sometimes because I had a cat that was without a name for almost a year)

My husband takes a different approach and gives his pets funny names, like when we first got married we got a puppy and her name was Life.

(you know because Life is a bitch, and female dogs are called bitches)

Betta fish are strange. They will fight each other to the death. If you have two in separate bowls and push the bowls together, they will try to attack each other through the glass.

I got a Betta a few months ago. Never having had a fish before, and not to optimistic about his survival chances, I named him Alpha--implying the first in a progression.

When he dies, and i get another one, I will name him Beta Betta. And so on...

This one is doing pretty well though.

I wouldn't recomend doing that tooo much though, my ex-boyfriend did that with my fish and my sisters and my fish hit the glass so hard, he killed himself......true story.

I got home from work and found my dead fish, I was so mad. Apparently they had pushed them together and then decided to go get high because it would be funnier then when they got high they forgot about the fish and they left them there like that for like 6 hours. :headbang:

I made them buy me a new fish.

I knew a lot of people who called their cat Cat, or their dog Dog. Given that everybody tries to come up with fancy names, such simplicity must count for being VERY original. So... just call him Fish, and be done with it :D

Be careful, though. I named my cats Bonnie and Clyde. I have since been treated to a never-ending supply of dead mice and the occasional rabbit. They also steal things. More than once, I've caught Bonnie with money - she loves 10s and 20s. She also likes jewelry.

Cannot think of a name
28-12-2005, 03:20
You should name your Beta fish Alpha.

And explain why.

But with a different answer each time.

The only similarities in the stories is that it is always something the person your telling didn't do, but should have.

Then tell them if they put thier finger on the surface of the water and the fish kisses it, that's good luck. But when it doesn't say, "Uh uh." then tell them it means they're going to die soon. Then ask them if you can have thier stereo. Especially if they don't have one.

When they ask why you didn't name the fish Sigma, look at them like they're completely nuts.

Tell people it likes to snuggle up to your shoulder to sleep, but refuse to explain, acting as if they've just asked you to describe masterbating.

First: congratulations! Bettas are the best pets, like, ever.
Secondly, I really think the name Neptune is a good one, and I like Tiamat as well. Or Dragon.
And third, a word of caution: if you love your fish, keep the water really clean. From my firsthand experience, there is just nothing more sad than a betta with a fish disease, especially when it's too late to be treatable *sigh*. And with that, I bid you good luck!
N Y C
28-12-2005, 04:58
Yeah, I'm pretty excited. I'm worried though, because the sides of the tank seem to be reflective, and I read Bettas can die if they stress out about their shadow for too long.

Hey, how about naming it Test? "This is my Betta Test!"/cornyjoke
Here's a cool one from a link someone left:
Zurvan:
Persian god of infinity. He symbolizes the four elements of water,
earth, wind, and fire. He also has four faces. (Sex, birth, aging,
death). Very...different.

On the other hand, maybe I'll go with Neptune. Or Helios, I've always liked that name. Keep coming guys!:)

Why would you want to name a fish anyway? It doesn't come if you call it, it can't even hear you in its fish tank, so it's pointless.
Call it "fish" and don't waste more time on this nonsense.

Ares or Mars, perhaps == God of War (as Bettas are pretty pugnacious) and associated with red to boot.

If you'd like for him to be happy, I suggest getting a 10 gallon tank and going the whole gravel/plants/aerator bit instead of leaving him in a tiny bowl. You could also put him in with other fish, so long as they are NOT bettas and do NOT have fancy tails.

Actually Kat, as I said before, I like to style myself as a compassionate pet owner. In fact, I spent lots of last night having nighmares about killing the fish. Again, I'm not even a pet person, I just can't bare to see living things unhappy if I can do something about it. The fish is currently in the aquarium (http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=3837&cm_mmc=Shopping%20Portal-_-Froogle-_-Fish-_-Eclipse%20Explorer%20II%20Replacement%20Lamps&OVMKT=K3QPUMA15VGJPI32VHS07EP4RS&ref=3312&subref=AA&GCID=C12188x003&ctt=60) it came in, a quite good quality 2 gallon with, apparently, very high efficiency filtration for it's size. There is one plant that takes up a corner of the tank that my fish seems to like a lot, and of course a gravel floor. I might get a modestly larger tank in the future, but for my room I don't think I can really can't accomodate anything past 5 gal. I'm also planning to buy frozen worms or other food my fish would like better than Betta bio-gold. For now though, he seems pretty content. /rant

By the way, I have decided to name it Ares. Thanks everyone!

Heavenly Sex: You know what, you're right. I am so stupid to take a little time off from caring about pressing world issues and humanitarian crisises, which I do almost constantly, to even consider naming a pet, which is obviously not a normal thing, as list after list of nameles pets on this thread can attest to. Furthermore, it was rude of me to deliberately come up with a topic on an animal you, and thus the rest of the world apparently, thinks is "gross" and, to top it all off, force you to read this thread. What a jerk I am. Thanks for showing me the error in my ways.

He should be fine -- trust me on this though -- keep the tank SCRUPULOUSLY clean. The small ones gunk up fast, and ick or fin rot is heartbreaking. (As in, cleaned every five days at most....)

Brine shrimp may be a good food for them -- they hatch fast, and it will let your little carnivore hunt. I think they also need warmish water.

NO Kat, not the sea monkeys!!!!!!!!

just kidding, I have pet sea monkeys, and also an african clawed dwarf frog that eats brine shrimp (sea monkeys) he likes them.

btw if you don't kill the Beta then an african clawed dwarf frog could keep him nice company and they will both like brine shrimp.

when you clean the tank don't do more than a 50% water change at a time or you will shock the poor little guy, and don't clean the filter on the same day as the tank cleaning because he needs some good bacteria to keep a good balance, if you get it too clean he could die. ;)
