The-Bee, a warrior country wants to know - What is your opinion of smileys?
This in no way indicates a desire on our part to end the use of said smileys but since a couple have indicated their feeling against them The-Bee wanted everyone to get the opportunity to voice theirs.

There seem to be two main reasons for using smilies:

1) The poster is a 'n00b' who thinks smilies are 'cool'. This also applies to older posters who are overly fond of a specific smiley (you know who you are).
2) The poster lacks a sufficient grasp of the English language to be able to express themself without annoyingly little pictures. I disagree with the argument that smilies aid expression, as far more subtlety can be achieved though well-crafted language.

From my experience at other forum sites, I have noticed that smileys can be a useful instrument in conveying emotions and thoughts (they started out as emotes remember?). Personally, I don't use them all that much in my posts, but I am always glad that I have the option to do so if I need/want to do so.

However, there are some that are just unneccesary.
I can understand why someone would need to show anger or disagreement with  , but is :upyours: really useful other than in Flame posts?

Also, what in the world is :gundge: ? The GES Biorifle (http://www.unrealtech.org/weapons.htm#bio) from Unreal Tournament?

Well, there is agreement between us that a well phrased commentary does not need additional fortification from other embellishments and I don't want to carry this too far as we obviously have differing opinions. I just wonder if you only read books (magazines and newspapers seem to think they need massive amounts said embellishments). And do you opt for radio over television?

I must however make a point that as a "nOOb" (your slang; not mine) I don't relegate the smiley to the level of "cool" and, I believe, I have a sufficient grasp of the English language to understand that you have the right and ability to express yourself , as you have, and I, I have the same. Don't let a simple smiley get to you - that smiley might be from your child.

i disagree. well-crafted language is all very well and good but often the emotional context - or a subtle undercurrent (like perhaps irony) - can be missed without use of smilies. besides, its not only the skill and responsibility of the post-writer to construct a message that properly expresses their thoughts, but also, because communication is a two way affair, the comprehension skills of the reader must also be taken into account. the reader may well take some posts - especially those with emotional content or subtle undercurrents - the wrong way (or not even pick up on said undercurrents or subleties) without the added expression given by the smilies.

to summarise: well-crafted posts can be all very well and good, and expressive, but add a smilie and it's more expressive, and there's nothing wrong with that (and its not much effort either lol)

and i did that whole post without using one smilie

I agree that smilies can be useful, a ':p ' is a very good way to show that you're joking for example. IMHO, the role of smilies is to replace non-verbal communication, much information in conversation is conveyed by expression, body language and tone of voice but obviously these are absent on a web forum. However, using gun smilies in every single one of your posts conveys no information and merely implies the author to be fairly childish.

dear OP, wouldn't it be for your use of a smiley, and not only that, but also one of the very most obnoxious smileys, in your post, i might even have expressed fondness for you.

things being as they are, let me just say that smileys are for losers!

if you need smileys in order to detect sentiments and/or irony etc., then, er, well, abstain, hm?

if you cannot express that your post was meant ironically and/or that you want to show fondness/anger/whatever at another poster without smileys, then..abstain.

okay, so these are the principles. that i don't adhere to either. but at least disable the graphic emoticons! they limit the expressiveness of an emoticon rather than expanding it!

oh, and eut, please DO get a new smiley. they say it's hard to change when you get oler, but..

You know what I hate? Fluffles. Those damn same-sex smilies are nothing more than an attempt to derail my morality on the internet.

The-Bee, a warrior country wants to know - What is your opinion of smileys?
This in no way indicates a desire on our part to end the use of said smileys but since a couple have indicated their feeling against them The-Bee wanted everyone to get the opportunity to voice theirs.

:mp5:

I use them when I cant be bothered to write out that im thinking. I have a very wide variety of them on msn but in forums like this I try not to use them too much and never the ones with guns.

I use very few on msn - the tongue, the wink, the raised eyebrow, and the smile, they're the ones I use fairly often. Occasionally I use the unhappy and the crying ones, but that's rare.
On here I pretty much only use :) :p (most often) ;) :fluffle: (only recently):D :(

Ok, wierd thread.

what do I feel about smilies? that the use of them can add a bit to a discussion, but, a thread that is onlyfull of them is similar to being in a forum with huge siggys and no content. (a waste of time....)

One of the anti-big siggy persons here. Some of us are STILL on dial- up, and if it takes three page downs to get past your 'messge' which is only pics, etc, grrrrr. Yeah I know that effort was put into it, but, man, I think that the forums that restrict siggy's to ten text lines only and without scroll tend to be better run.
