Crappiest City?

It can be any size city town or village. I amNOT putting a poll with this because then people don't post, and because there are just too many cities in our world.

It's gone downhill since then, I was only a toddler then but I remember it used to be a lot nicer back in them days, nowadays it's just a craphole basically, theres a lot of crime and a lot of drugs and a little bit of prostitution, and the council keep spending all the money on crap like lights to make the council offices look better. It's one of the poorest areas in the UK and it shows, it really does, all the industry has moved to China and the buildings are in disrepair. It's not a nice place to be really.

I do have to give it to the council, they are trying to make it nicer it's just they squander the money away on pointless things like lights, but they are trying, just somewhat unsuccessfully.

WOw, no one has picked a Canadian city yet?

Fine, I'll break the ice.

Ottawa (the national capital, for those who don't know) is the crappiest city ever. It is filled to the brim with egotistical, corrupt, over paid politicians who don't do anything except make empty promises. Then, there are the people, who are disgustingly narrow minded, and think that they actually have a good hockey team. These people also bitch when it isn't cold enough or when they only have a couple of inches of snow, and that snow melts before freakin' June.

I mean, geez... the O-Train? That is extremely gay, and on top of that, this stupid train go nowhere. The buses only come every 15 minutes during rush hour, and, on the weekend? The bus routes are far too loopy. THe buses ALL go along side streets, and it makes transit extremely inefficiant. I mean, whatever happened to walking to the closest bus stop at a main street? It was faster to bike/walk, but you can't do that in the winter because it's too damn cold out.

And as for weather, it is one of the coldest national capitals in the world. And yet, when it gets into the deep negative 20s and mild negative 30s, school isn't cancelled; we don't even get a snow day when there are snow squalls... they never closed school for anything, well, I take that back. They only closed school for the Ice Storm of 98 and for the teacher's strike.

There are too many Lebanese take out places there and not enough Japanese/Chinese ones, which really sucks...

That 'vinyl' siding revolution hasn't died yet. You know, that tacky house siding that you normally see in trailer parks? Yeah, that crappy building material is on middle class homes because the construction teams are too cheap to use good material.

There are almost no good bars there and everything, except the bars and restaurants close way too early.

It's ignorant stereotypes like this that make it hard for Detroit to recover. Detroit is like any other big city in the Rustbelt. Certainly no better, but not much worse, if at all.

The worst first world city I've ever been to has to be St. Louis, Missouri. I'll drive around in downtown Detroit in a Klan uniform before I'll drive around in certain parts of St. Louis. Which is a shame, because it apparently used to be a nice town.

They THINK they have a good hockey team? They KNOW they have a good hockey team. The Sens have the best record in the NHL this season.

As for the snow day thing...I walk to school in -40 weather. I live about 2 miles from my school (I live in northern Ontario). We've never had a snow day, and the school has never even considered one. I must say, this winter has been pretty good to us in terms of cold weather. Last year it was so cold that my shoes froze, and the back heel part of my shoe was so hard it dug into my heel and after time I was bleeding through my sock.

Heh... I live in Detroit. I'm looking out of a 5th story loft apartment window now at the city--a nice blanket of snow. My girlfriend and I are doing just fine here. We have running water, cable TV, wireless internet, 8 parakeets, and as long as you don't do anything completely foolish you're going to be ok.

Do I want to leave here? Yes... mostly out of boredom. The city is divided between itself and the suburbs, where most of the 'things-to-do' have moved out into the suburbs-- but many of the suburban alternatives are just tacky.

Do any of these things make Detroit the worst city in the world? I would give that a far no. Anyone that lives here on average is probably still better off than the average citizen of earth and to suggest otherwise is just drama--and watching too much 'news'.

As far as worst city in the world, I'm going to *guess* it's probably not in the US and most of us probably wouldn't recognize the name of the city itself. How are the Maldives or Indonesia holding up after the tsunami? How long ago was the genocide in Rwanda? Who wants to be a police officer in Baghdad?

Detroit? I can drive a half-block and fill my grocery cart with fresh produce and anything else my heart desires in abundance. There are poor people here too, but when they go to the store they are still going to get good fresh food that is far better than most of the world can brag about.

I'm really fuzzy on this, though. The last time I read about it was back in 2004.

Sheesh, where do you get this stuff? It is MUCH safer here than in NYC, Detriot, Chicago, or DC.
Worst cities would be Bagdad, Beiruit, or Pyonyag. IMHO.
Having grown up in Brooklyn, NY, spent 9 months in the first Gulf War in the Iraq area, and have made numerous visits to both Hong Kong and Singapore (as well as numerous other cities around the world), I would have to say the WORST cities I've been to would have to be Jakarta, Indonesia and Kabul, Afghanistan. Both were overcrowded with absolutely NOTHING to offer themselves or the rest of the world!

I agree. Out of all the cities I've been too (not many, lol) Rome was the worst. I just wanted to wash my hands all the time (sadly I was out of hand sanitizer). And yeah, the men there were too friendly. At least in Venice they talked to you before they groped you, lol. :(

yes, I certainly wouldn't liked to have been a girl in Rome. The groping, sleazy, bag-snatching guys and the rose sellers at the Trevi Fountain were horrible! I virtually had to body-check them away from my friend any time we walked through the place. Nightmare.

Except Robocop was filmed in parts of Dallas and Houston.

(Oh I see, someone always has to find the loophole)

Seriously though, while I haven't been to Detroit, I think it probably has an unjust reputation, at least parts of it. Movies like Robocop show Detroit as a bleak and hoplessly crime ridden city and that probably has an effect on the general viewpoint of the city. Every city has crime, and every city has it's shoddy areas.

In my opinion, the worst city in the U.S. would be St. Louis, but that's only because everyone I know who have been there have said it is a city where you don't feel safe anywhere. The worst city in the world would probably be Kabul because there's nothing to do and it is supposeed to be poor, but I don't have the right to really say it's the worst because I've never been there.

Dirty, smelly, cramped, full of small, dank alleys. The Underground is horrendously humid and disgusting. The Central station 'Termini' is a hell-hole full of sleazy guys who attempt to assault any females in your group and about half the people there are just waiting to rob someone.

Most of what they've done there since about the 16th century ought to be evacuated and demolished. And the graffiti is beyond pathetic, just morons' names, unlike (say) the Buenos Aires graffiti that tends to be Situationist. But it's not the worst city I've ever been to. (That's probably Stoke. Nice people, but if the IRA blew Stoke up they'd do about £100m worth of improvement.)

Alright, I'll concede there. I went to a school a good 4 miles from Preston, but the chav density was still large enough that we had 30 locked-up bikes stolen in one 6 week period.

He may have a point here. Downriver Detroit and all of its industry smells absolutely horrid. I feel for anyone downstream in the great lakes that has to deal with whatever spews out of this city-- they say Lake Erie is this horrible polluted mess, and then they look at Ohio like it's all their fault. Well, almost all of the water that enters Lake Erie comes from Lake Michigan, Lake Superior, and Lake Huron, which is all funneled into the Detroit River and passes our fair city and collects all of our beautiful fragrances...

If you mean modern city than New Orleans might currently be the least cleanly. But if we are talking about anywhere, there are hundreds of cities/towns where people use a river as their sewer system and as the source for their drinking water. At least they have clean water down in New Orleans.

These other towns, (other than N'Awlins) do they also have sky high cancer rates? New Orleans is at the end of cancer alley.

Last I heard, they were still advising that no children or pregnant persons go into the city because it was still so contaminated.

Getting dysentary from unsanitary water supplies is one thing. Getting cancer from the environs. well, I think that trumps.

Other than that, I can't really comment on your post ;) I hear the universities are nice! :P
I say that part about the hockey team because they become oddly silent when the Sens lose a game or two or hit a losing streak. They go from making the headlines to being hidden on page 5 of the sport section between the local poker tournament and women's curling. :p

I walked to school in that weather as well... let's just say, my poor shoes didn't hold up well either. Soaked right through and I had a damn thick heel on those beetle boots of mine.

To be honest, NYC doesn't do it for me either. I have no idea why so many people view it as the center of the universe. Nor do I know why I wasn't all that impressed. I loved Paris, which is similarly sized, so it's not that. Something about that city is just suffocating and claustrophobia-inducing in a way no other city I've ever been to is.

Denver is the only American city I've really liked, and by city I mean with over 1M people. Ann Arbor, Michigan is my favourite city, but many people here wouldn't consider it a "city" because its too small. I grew up in a town of 400 people, so I have a slightly different perspective.

If we're including third world cities, the worst I've ever been to is Ar Ramadi, Iraq. Each part of town has a rather distinctive aroma.

Worst city in the world - Mexico, NY. If you have a family, don't take them there for anything because if your kids aren't perfect clones of every other kid they will declare them legally insane and send them across the county to a school for troubled kids. The claustrophobia I understand, although having grown up here I've rarely experienced it, but if you come from such a tiny town it's not uncommon. Personally, I believe NYC to be one of the best cities in the world on so many levels, just like London and Tokyo. We have every imaginable culture and creed here, and they all live together in remarkable harmony given the pressures of city life. In fact, New York is per capita safer than most of the other big cities in the US. Of coursel, I'm biased, so to each his own...
My dad grew up in a small town too, so I understand where you're coming from.

I do recognize that NYC has a lot to offer as far as landmarks and culture. And its not that I particularly dislike NYC, its just that I didn't particularly like it, if that makes any sense.

I may have grown up in a small town, but I've lived in larger cities. I lived just outside of Frankfurt, Germany and Colorado Springs, and while they're both smaller than NYC, not many towns aren't. I've become used to being in a crowded city, but NYC seemed more suffocating to me than others. Perhaps its the skyscrapers, which Paris didn't really have (outside La Defense) that does that.

I think Camden, NJ has the highest crime rate in the US now.
Camden is the most dangerous city in the US, meaning you have the highest chance of being the victim of a violent crime. It doesn't necessarily have the highest crime rate if you take into account non-violent crimes.

Mogadishu.
Meh, it's just Camden, NJ without the political corruption.

Johannesberg. The Rape Capital of the World.
That probably makes Johannesburg the most dangerous city in the world as well.

Sunderland in the UK, the only people who live there either haven't found a way to get out of it yet or never will. Everybody there looks miserable and docile, nobody bumps into you or tells you to get out of the way like normal people do in the isolated, high-anxiety atmosphere of a city, they say sorry and walk around you, pathetic. There is no gay scene, there are w*nkers with spoilered cars coming at you from every direction with their windows open, blasting happy hardcore music and the buses only turn up when they want to. The city's two single-sex catholic schools are said to be a less traumatic experience for chldren than the rest. The architecture gives Sheffield a run for its money in the monstrous concrete department and all the kids seem to care about there is whether they're emo, goth or chav.

I thought Gary Indiana had the highest crime rate in the US.

Also, I say detroit because it has the highest crime rate in the world, and is heavily polluted.

Don't get me wrong, there's a ton of things wrong with detroit... namely, it's crooked mayor and city council... but detroit does not hold the record for the highest crime rate anymore.

Camden NJ is now the most dangerous city in the US
http://www.morganquitno.com/cit06pop.htm#25

And, as of 2004 (the last full year for which stats are available) st. louis, atlanta, baltimore, and orlando all have higher violent crime rates than Detroit. Violent crime does not include offenses against property
http://www.detnews.com/2005/metro/0510/18/B01-352406.htm
And though i could only find the 2003 stats, Dallas led the US for overall crime rate (at that point, for the 6th straight year).
So, detroit's crime rate is not the highest in the US, let alone the world.

And though detroit has its pollution problems, it's still cleaner than Los Angeles... and it's never set a lake on fire, unlike its neighbors to the south in Cleveland. Not to mention that the state of michigan's environmental protection act has been a model for many states.

Worst city I've been to is Miami Florida. The people are the rudest in the world. Even service people that are supposed to be nice are rude. You can't even get directions from people on the street without a large tip first.

It's definitely one of the most dangerous, that's for sure.

Surrey, British Columbia

If you change it slightly it becomes an apology

Sorry, British Columbia

I used to defend it but it just continues to prove me wrong. It is just a sprawling mass of developement, which would be bad enough but they mostly build strip malls which is even worse. Two of the worse bridge on-ramps evar!11! And now...with Gang related shootings. Atleast the auto theft went down, we got the bait car program so they all moved to the next town over.

Seriously about 7 years ago our head of auto theft had his car stolen.

Oddly enough, was it last year, or the year before, when CNN stated a person was five times more likely to be violently assaulted in London than anywhere in the US? Not that CNN has such a sterling rep.
DC still hold murder capitol of the US, I think.
Most dangerous city changes over time - Berlin, May 1945 might have kinda sucked to live in, as London during the blitz.
Right now it's still Bagdad, more than likely, just, IIRC, Berlin was a very dangerous city for quite a bit of the occupation. Corect me if I'm wrong, as the Allies didn't end the occupation until 1952 or so.

Wouldn't surprise me. While guns are banned in England, that doesn't deter street crime.

This group does well-known crime rankings every year for cities in the US.

Camden, NJ is first, and Gary, Indiana (the one I nominated) is 9th.

On a related note, New York, NY is rated the 5th safest city with a population of 500,000+.
