Interesting. I'd heard that Sarkozy had lost a lot of support because of his Le Pen like views and actions with regard to the Paris riots. I'm surprised that Le Pen has managed to gain so much support.

I should hope that the French people have more brains than that, but I seem to recall I placed that same confidence in the American people too and was disappointed. Oh well.

True. At least idiots in small numbers are easier to throw rotting fruit and such at.

That means that a clear majority, 61 percent, now see Le Pen as a legitimate candidate, and that his policies of compulsory mass expulsion of immigrants, including children born in France and thus French citizens, are an acceptable part of political discourse.

No shit! This is action and reaction to higher and higher extremes. If this is the way things go France will be torn apart, complete with suicide bombers. I'll just be here smugly saying they brought it on themselves.

It'll be a whole lot less fun for the people who have to live in Europe. I mean, I enjoy playing WWII simulation games, but I'm glad I didn't have to go through the real thing.

And the comparison to WWII is appropriate, because Europe has been down this road before. I wonder how one says "Ein Volk, ein Reich, ein Fuehrer" in French?

Actually immigrants can better adapt in America, partially because they have to. The French government let's them in and then fuck's them over. The people don't accept them, so it's subsidized. Then the rioting starts.

Not really, most of the supposed problems we have are really nothing more then shallow hyperbolic bullshit. No issue even comes close to the riots in France. Frankly, America at large is extremely apathetic and comfortable with the status quo, nothing here compares with the racist nationalism of the French even though one or two pundits may make it look that way from time to time.

No it doesn't. It means that 61% of French people aren't completely turned off by Le Pen's views. They may find some of his economic policies quite good, but still find his immigration policies to be abhorrent.

I don't expect America to follow in the exact same path as France has, but eventually American democracy will come to an end. Probably with a whole lot of violence to accompany it. I mean, if an entire city can go into anarchy over a group of cops beating up a black man, who is to say it won't happen again on a larger scale?

Don't count on it, we may argue about something on the internet for a few months or pay some assclown pundits of your favorite flavor an exorbitant amount of money to share their thoughts on it. Beyond that, we will just go to work make our money and come home to curse at the TV a little.

While France is trading ever more powerful blows, we just have this sort of stagnant wobble going on.

When Jorg Haider got elected in Austria, everyone was like "oh noes, Hitler is coming back!"

Guess what happened to Jorh Haider racist policies? They got flushed in the world of Real Politik. Even Le Pen, as president, would curtail is racist speech.

Anyway.. I doubt Le pen will get elected. These are feelings that people have, that doesn't mean they will get translated into votes.

Of course, as kanabia stated, americans did elect bush, so the french can elect le pen too :/

Perhaps you missed the reference in my last post. Similar things have happened in America before. The USA is not invincible.

Not only in America. I see the anti-immigration movement gaining momentum throughout Europe and America. Maybe people feel immigrants who will not assimilate are threatening their culture. Something to think about.

while the majority in the Middle East (67 percent), Eastern Europe (61 percent), and Central and South America (53 percent), and some 50 percent in Western Europe were against immigrants.

So yes it is a the majority some places.
With some places like Russia and France being above the avrage.

Why not start a poll in another thread on that? I know the results won't be scientific but what the heck. I think there are a lot more people that are anti-immigration than most people would think. I believe there a lot who won't talk openly about it but when you talk to them one on one they are against it.

It's never going to happen. Do you remember 2002? Once Le Pen got 2nd place due to voter apathy you saw a tremendous outpouring of anti-fascist sentiment from all corners of France.

the traditional values of France are not adequately protected
Le Pen does not support the traditional values of France.

Le Pen does not support the traditional values of France.

Well that might be, but judging from this article he might win any way.

Well, it seems like the Italians did a lot better job than the Germans did...considering that Nazism isn't really Fascism and so on...

That being said: If the French vote for that bastard, you will have one more France-Basher on these fora.
