I am looking forward to this Christmas more than I have for several years. The family invasion will start in about an hour or two. My wonderful husband is cooking a huge meal of crawfish etouff’ee, file’ gumbo, and oyster pie. My daughters-in-law are making all of the side dishes and desserts. I get to sit on my butt and sugar on the grandkids. Our family is pretty big and we all lead uniquely different lives, but during the holidays we put aside our minor differences to love and appreciate each other as part of the family “us”. We’ll have tons of gifts for the kids and a small gift exchange among the adults. Then we’ll all pitch in to set up the dining table, load it with food, and sit down, sing the Happy Birthday song to Jesus, and jump into a long, hilarious, dinner. As we usually do, we’ll agree that we miss my daughter, Mary, then we’ll start remembering all the wonderful, funny, goofy things she did and end up with a warm loving glow in our hearts.
I can’t let Christmas and Channukah go by without extending a holiday greeting to my friends here on NS. You have so affected my life with your compassion, understanding, and brilliance. Whether you are a person of faith or not, today is an excellent day to take stock of all the good things in your life, and to let the people who matter to you know that you love them. It isn’t about the gifts, or the food, or the decorations, or the customs surrounding this season. It’s all about the love. Give it freely and take every tiny bit that is offered and you will be rich beyond imagining.
So, my gift to all of you this holiday season and for all seasons:
I love you!!
Merry Christmas and Happy Channukah!
