Know It's Been Done A Few Times, But It's Still Fun To See What Video Games People Choose. Note That You CAN Put Video Game Series.

1. Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind + Expansion Packs + All Mods I've Downloaded (Mods Are Crazy Fun)

2. Far Cry: Instincts (Primarly For Multiplayer, Single Player Sucks, And Map Editor Is CRAZY Fun)

3. Fable (Really Well Done Good/Evil System, Unlike Other Good/Evil Games)

4. Black & White 2 (A Good/Evil Strategy Game, AMAZING! Just Tossin' 'Round Some Lil' Kiddies....)

5. Command & Conquer Series (Cinematics=Cheezy, Game Play=Incredible Fun. Multiplayer Makes It Incredibly Better, As Well)

1) Homeworld series: Introduced 3D movement and other unique elements to the RTS genre.
2) Half-Life series: Revamped the entire FPS genre.
3) Mario Bros.: Saved console gaming.
4) Guild Wars: Introduced free play per month to a front-line MMORPG.
5) Metal Gear series: Practically created and recreated the stealth action genre.

So many capitols!!!

Random capitalization FTW!! :p

I'm not sure about the top 5 games of all time, but I suspect the Fallout series would be somewhere on my list. Apart from that... It's too hard for me to make up my mind.

2)The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind (and Tribunal and Bloodmoon exp. packs)- Countless hours spent playing that game+mods=awesome! Can not wait for Oblivion.
3)Halo 2: Xbox live and LAN parties totally rock
4)Hearts of Iron II- Turkish troops invade Australia, Brazil annexes Japan, USA as leader of Axis? I love when the worlds fate is in my hands.
5)Battlefield 1942 and Rode to Rome exp. pack- Awesome times online as well as going over to some of my best friends houses to play it.

ok, it's really simple.

Half Life (either one and 2, both are stupendously badass)
Rome: Total Realism (war is great, but realism seals the deal.)
Thief 2 (mechanists for the win)
Knights of the Old Republic.
After some internal debate, Homeworld clinches the fifth spot.

2)World of Warcraft(here's hoping is never ends up like EverQuest)

Too late. :( I had a lvl60 undead priest on Paranolde, but got burnt out on the repetition of the end game, and the lame-ass politics and posturing of elitists and uberguilds.

3)EverQuest(when and if it ever worked)

It was great in its infancy, circa 99-01, but the first expansion kicked off its decline in the wrong direction.

These are unranked, just because I can't be bothered to rank them.

Halo series - if I did rank, this would probably be top. (Spin offs and tie in included :D)

Civilisation series. Awesomeness in a box.

KOTOR series - Would've been a serious contender for top spot (anyone looking forward to 3?)

Total War - only played Medieval and Viking Invasion, but they kick arse, and the others, from what I hear, are just as good.

Baldur's Gate - 1 and 2, and also most of the Forgotten Realms games. They rawk.

1. Hitman series (I prefer Hitman: Contracts)

I think the original Hitman is the best. The storyline's great, and the end is damn cool. Killing yourself 10 times with a minigun...I don't think any game has a better ending than that.

well, Metal Gear Solid and it's sequels are some of the best games ever. As far as computer games go, I'm all about boring Turn-based Strategy games, like the Total War series (which rock) RTS's I think that nothing has yet surpassed Starcraft, though AOE2 is really sweet. And then there's San Andreas, which is one of my favourates, GTA2 was good as well, I never played that much of number 3, but Vice City is really good. Fable is good if you like short, linier games that aren't very fun after you've beaten it once already. I did like the Way of the Samurai series way too much, the first one was really good, and the second, even though it had a lot more and better features lost the magic of the first one. Sonic Adventure DX is one of the better games you can get for gamecube (which isn't saying much) Super Mario 64 is one game which everyone dispises me for beating it (not because it's hard, but getting 120 stars is the most worthless persuit I've ever undertaken) Super Mario RPG is a really good game, or at least it was when I played it as a young'un. I personally don't believe in rating things in such a linier fashion. Things are more complex than that.

If you liked civ III you'll like civ IV, I personally was hoping for it to have more to it, but it's almost the same game in my opinion. It does have a thing a lot like in Alpha Centauri where you choose how your nation is run which effects how much other nations like you, and the fighting is a little easier. But they didn't change anything major.

Because there are no "Top 5 games of all time". Everyone's just posting their favourite games. No justification or anything.

Oh, okay. I can justify mine.

Civilisation - All of them. I've spent so much time playing these. The best empire building sims bar none, nothing has managed to beat it yet. The sense of accomplishment when winning a close game is amazing.

Star Control 2 - In addition to being a very cool space RPG, it has the best aliens *ever*, mixed with a healthy amount of humour. The combat system was simple, but a helluva lot of fun. It was a truly epic game, and while it was fairly linear in nature, there were several ways you could advance the main plotline. Best of all, the source code was released and you can now get a windows version free: http://sc2.sourceforge.net/ There's no excuse for not having played it :D

Jagged Alliance 2 - The best character interaction ever (your soldiers all had distinct personalities...upon replaying it, i'd often pick guys just because they were funny rather than good), and a great atmosphere that fit the setting perfectly. It was probably the best squad-level game ever made by virtue of this and it's great playability.

X-com: UFO Enemy Unknown - Like Jagged Alliance, but a bit older and without the character interaction. It's more nostalgia that compelled me to put this in the list- but I still play it to this day, so it's definitely a good game.

System Shock 2 - The only game to truly scare the shit out of me - great plot development as well. Play this at night, with headphones on. And poop your pants when a zombie comes out of apparently nowhere, screams, and clubs you in the back of the head with a monkey wrench.

Other games that are good-

Hearts of Iron II - The best WW2 strategy game ever, but I have a feeling that the series will keep getting better...very close to perfection, but not quite. There are hardware issues (it gets reaaaallly slow in the late stages of the game) and a few bugs left.

Deus Ex - Fantastic story, multiple endings, but the interface is really similar to System Shock II, and that only just edged it out on the virtue of its "feel". One of the best games ever anyway.

Warcraft II - I truly loved this when I was younger, but it hasn't stood the test of time so well. It was a great game in its day.

Half Life 2 - The best FPS ever. I don't think the genre can really improve on this much. Even so, it's still a linear FPS.

Baldur's Gate Series - Great RPGs with an epic plot, but it's a little silly how the endings for playing an evil character and a good character are basically the same. (haven't played through the last expansion pack yet, so I might be wrong there)

Morrowind - I love the freeform aspect, and it's definitely a good game, but something's missing. Maybe it's the character development (once you reach a certain point, nothing can beat you anyway), maybe it's the generic nature of the NPC's, maybe it's *too* freeform and the plot seems like too much of an afterthought, but it doesn't feel quite "right". I think it's more technological limitations than anything. Making the NPCs truly seem like real people is too much of a task for the computers of the time. In the future, maybe, the dream will be realised. I think this will eventually be the future of games. For now, it's just a good game rather than one of the best ever.

Right on, Commander.

In no particular order:

Elite (quite simply incredible, and still utterly playable)
Zork (many a wasted childhood week there)
Steel Panthers (World At War by choice, but the original SP1 is still pretty fun)
Doom II (if only for the double-barrelled shotgun sound)
ADOM (Imagine if Nethack actually made sense)

Great list. No excuse for anyone to not have played these either, they're all available for free, with the exception of Doom 2. :)

Elite (http://www.iancgbell.clara.net/elite/pc/index.htm)

Is anyone as fucked off as i'am about the commodification of medieval based themes ?

I mean look at the most recent movies. King Arthur, Alexander, Troy, Kingdom of Heaven. Why is it that people are starting to enjoy more medieval based games and movies.

When i say medieval, i mean the style, such as gregorian chant like music, armour, swords, ect. Does it fuck any one off as much as it does me ?

Do you feel as if your own personal interest is being exploited ? Something you've enjoyed for a very long time now being turned into a corporate mechanism ?

In general i'm talking about The Elder Scrolls Series
I wonder when this phase will end ?
What will be the next historically based movie ?
The Battle of Hastings ? ... Or was that part of King Arthur ?
Maybe someone will decide to the Third Servile War... :headbang:

For something like this, I have to go with a list of games that will be remembered by everyone. Not because they sold a lot, but because they're just that good.

In no particular order:

The Metroid series
The Super Mario Bros. series
The Metal Gear series
Street Fighter II
The Mega Man series

Yeah, there's a buttload of great games/game series, but I remember these better than any others. I wasted hundreds of quarters on Street Fighter II back in the early 90's; literally thousands of hours on Metroids I, II, and III, and Prime; more 20-minute sessions of Mega Man before school than I can remember; long days of playing nothing by Super Mario Bros. 3; and some great sessions with Metal Gear games (freaking out when being spotted by guards is one of the best moments in gaming, period).

I'd go for some honorable mentions, but meh.

I can justify mine, too:
Half-Life - quite simply the best FPS ever. The story is great and imaginative, simple control system, completely immerses you in the game, right from the start.
Deus Ex - as Kanabia said, it has a fantastic story. In fact, in my opinion, it has the best story of any computer game ever. Let down by the graphics, which weren't even up to date when it came out 5 (or 4? can't remember) years ago.
Championship Manager series - best management sim ever, more addictive than this forum. Ultra-realistic.
Civ II - best of the Civ games, which Kanabia has already justified.
Lemmings - do I need to? :p

OK, here are my justifications:

M.U.L.E.

One of the first multi-player games. Very simple, yet complex economic system. All player work against each other, but have to cooperate at the same time. As always Dani Bunten-Berry was ahead of her time with this game.

Deus Ex

Great story, great gameplay. One of the few games with a serious storyline that connects to our reality in more than just one ways. Technically not flawless, but the atmosphere and the story more than make up for that.

Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask

Even though there are less dungeons to explore, I liked this one better than Ocarina of Time. The whole save-the-world-in-three-days is a great gameplay-concept and combined with the sleak Zelda-controll-scheme, this game is a must-play. Needless to say that I finished it in 3 real-time days.

ICO

Very beautiful. Very sad.

Ultima IV

Why did I choose that? I had fun playing it.

Maybe the gaming scholars in here can help me. There was this awesome PC game many millions of years ago (ok, so maybe early- mid 90's I think) but I can't for the life of me remember. It was an alien invasion type game. You hired and equipped marines, went out in aircraft and shot down UFO's (some of which were small scout craft and easily shot down, others large battleships which would fire back and take out your ship if you got too close). You would then go out on "missions" with your marines, where you explore the crash site, fight any surviving aliens, etc. You could get better weaponry by researching technology you found and knowledge from interrogating captured aliens. There was a sequal/expansion where the aliens were all underwater and stuff too. Anyone who remembers, let me know.

3. Fable (Really Well Done Good/Evil System, Unlike Other Good/Evil Games)

5. Command & Conquer Series (Cinematics=Cheezy, Game Play=Incredible Fun. Multiplayer Makes It Incredibly Better, As Well)
Yikes, that one's tough. There's a lot that barely didn't make it onto this list.
