I was just watching "Parris Island: Phase II" on the Military Channel when it really hit me ... I miss the military, a lot! I miss two-mile runs before dawn. I miss the rifle range. I miss the feeling of being surrounded by my bros. But most of all, I miss having the direction and purpose that derive from being a part of something more important than just me.
What do you miss? ( Please do try to restrain yourself from being flippant! )

Well, you can still have the two miles runs before dawn...or just the runs before dawn... :p
As you're in America, I'm sure you could get a rifle and go find a rifle range.
The rest of it, I guess you can't get back.
I miss...not much really, but then I've not been alive as long. Right now I miss my girlfriend, but I'll see her next week, so I guess that doesn't count...
Actually, something I do miss, that I don't have the money for right now, is regular tournament chess. I used to play at tournaments pretty much every other weekend up until the age of about 14 (I'm now 20), and I haven't played competitive chess, with the exception of for my university last year, since then. Should get back to it. I know I'll teach my kids (if/when I have kids) chess, and I'll take them to tournaments, but that's not for a good few years yet (I'm thinking around 15).

I know what you're talking about. Although I don't miss it, I love staying in bed until gone midday.
I miss those simple days that are now long gone for me. those days where life was grand and each day was a happy one.
Yep. I miss those days when my Parents paid for everything.

I ran a laser-tag venue when I lived in the UK. I took it from a tiny little broke, bankrupt outfit on the verge of repossession - and made it into a venue that people travelled from all over the country... and even some from other places in Europe, to play.
I played pretty much every day, for several years. It was pretty much my perfect job... dealing with customers face-to-face, doing something I was really good at, having fun while I was doing it.

Pretty much... just using infra-red and light sensors, instead of spattering each other with paint. Laser-tag is also more friendly for inner-city type venues, because you can play it inside, without having to constantly clean up a big mess.

Christamas eve when I was a little kid. The whole family (on my mom's side, my dad's family were in Europe) would gather at Grandma and Grandpa's house. My cousins and I would play together, we'd eat a big seafoof meal, and it felt great to see uncles, aunts, and cousins all together joking, drinking and eating.

I see all that now from a slightly different perspective. Now all the "uncles, aunts and cousins" are my children and grandchildren. You'll just have to take my word for it that the feelings are just as great, if not greater. :)

At the venue I ran, we used to get a fair few cadets from the armed-forces. They seemed to think it good practise to run around in a big dark labyrinthine structure, shooting each other.

We actually had a lot of different setting potentials on our system... different ways to configure the system. If we wanted limited 'lives' or 'shots' it was a fairly simple matter to set that kind of game up.
We usually reserved those kind of games for our special event evenings... playing various kinds of 'custom' tournaments.

I also miss my cats, Liz and T.C. :(
Liz was my first pet. T.C. was one of Liz's kittens from her first(and only) litter. They were great pets. Oh, don't get me wrong, I love Evil the Cat. But you always miss your previous pets. :(

I miss being a nerd with no responsibility and few friends. Back then was awesome, I never worked out, just woke up, went to school, did that homework, played comp. A regular day varied between 3~9 hours playing some game or another. But now...I have college, work, friends, staying in shape. I like this new phase of my life quite a bit, but every now and then (like today) I get hit with the fact that...in "gamer/nerd land" I am old and have no chance of every catching up skill wise. I miss being young (er) and so fit. Sure I'm only 16, but when I was about 10, I was so fast I ran in the relay team with the 12yr olds. Then I kinda stopped and only recently have I started to realise I can gain that back.
I sort of miss being single sometimes, when me and my gf of 8 months have a fight. Makes me wonder what the fuck I'm doing.
I miss my old house that we used to live in 'cause now we live in a shit one so it sucks.
I miss going to a co-educational school.
I miss living with my Mum and my Aunty. Mum cooks nice dinners, and my Aunty is an amazing dessert cook and baker (my Mum and her sister are very close. Only recently have they moved away from eachother).
I miss my friends from primary school. None of them came to the secondary school I went to and my best mate moved out of Wellington and I've seen him once in the last 3 years.
I miss having good skin! Mine isn't too bad, but when you look at old photos.. Damn puberty bullshit.

These days most movies are eighter complete utter crap, or remakes (with the occasional jewel coming out now & then), and music seems to be reduced to hip-hop & R'nB & eminen kinda trash.

What I really, REALLY miss is boredom.
Do you remember the time as a kid, when you didn't have much to do, especially during summer holidays (or any holidays really), and you just got up in the morning to a completely blank day? When you had so much time that you could even be bored together with some friends because you saw them that often anyway?
I remember sitting in my room with my best friend for ages, sometimes playing, sometimes each of us would read or draw or do something that you wouldn't do any more if you had a friend over, because the time you get to spend with them has become so short you wouldn't want to waste it.
I sometimes really miss having so much time that I can simply waste it, and I miss not being able to spend that much time with my closest friends any more.

Once when I was [ euphemistically speaking ] between jobs, we couldn't afford to buy a tree. I took the family wayyy out in the country ( we were living in Mechanicsville, MD at the time ) and found a pinetree to cut down. By the time we were finished decorating it, the little tree was beautiful to us. Sometimes your best memories are of times you thought were tough.
