With recourse to no channel of external information (namely, search engines), state what you consider to be the correct answer:

1. Amongst the adult populations of all SSA nations, which possesses the highest overall literacy rate? The highest male literacy rate? The highest female literacy rate? Approximate figures for each.

I'd imagine South Africa for all of them.
Let's see...maybe around 75-80% overall literacy, 80-85% for men, 70-75% for women.
Depends on the definition of literacy, though. Some statistics claim you're literate if you can read and write your own name, some require simple sentences, others fairly complex sentences.

At least one of the above answers came, from a geographical perspective, quite close.

Seychelles, with 99% literacy, total cable and electrical access, and per capita income on par with the west.

Seychelles, with 99% literacy, total cable and electrical access, and per capita income on par with the west.

On this point, probably due to a combination of factors (not least of which being "literacy" definition, surveying skew, and otherwise inherent error), the World Bank and CIA World Factbook are at odds. Regardless, by none of the sources I referenced do the Seychelles have a 99% literacy rate. What is your guess as to mainland SSA nations?

South Africa, I'd guess.

South Africa, I'd guess.

Already stated to be incorrect. The answer will, I feel, come as a surprise to many.

Zimbabwe? about 80%

According to the World Bank, yes. CIA World Factbook figures:

definition: age 15 and over can read and write English
total population: 90.7%
male: 94.2%
female: 87.2% (2003 est.)

what about the St Helena

As an overseas territory of the UK, I don't believe it really qualifies as a nation.
