I'm actually a bit ambivalent on the subject. Sure, a 15 year old might not be able to make proper decisions, but I remember when I was 15 and I certainly would have enjoyed having a hot older woman give me some hands on experience. I don't think it would have been traumatic in the least.

It's interesting that we're pretty much okay with a 15-year-old boy getting his freak on with someone 5+ years older than him. Switch the genders and suddenly it's a capital crime.

For the boy, our words are "good for him" and "damn, why couldn't that have been me". I understand that completely -- at 15 I was relentlessly horny and had very limited outlets. For a girl in the same situation, it's likely that we'd immediately brand the older man a pedophile or at least an ephebophile and demand he be castrated and locked up.

As I'm originally from Seattle, I'm most familiar with the Mary Kay Letourneau story (I haven't heard anything about the Florida incident...but it shouldn't surprise anyone that weird shit is happening in Florida), and even though she served seven+ years of jail time, the uproar over the whole mess was comparably mute compared to that which would have ensued had the genders been reversed.

Seems to me that the more we as a society continue to shroud sex and sexuality in a cloak of mystery and illicitness, the more we indirectly encourage this kind of thing as well as the continued sexualization of children at younger and younger ages. The Puritan sexual ethic combined with the capitalist urge to sell (most often to men by using chicks in various states of undress with their mouths hanging open like Terry Schaivo...witness any Vitoria's Secret ad) do not make for an enlightening combination.

Why Oklahoma? Good question. I'd figure the likelihood of her being caught (or even suspected of anything out of the ordinary) would be far less just next door in Arkansas....

The typical response is that male sexuality and female sexuality are two entirely seperate things. I don't think that's true. Not only is it a double standard, but you have to admit that your preceptions of the situation immediately change when it's a male teacher with a male student, even if the kid is homosexual. I think it's just us letting our preconcieved notions of things get the better of us.

Well call me old, but Miss ------'s house after school was what we considered extra credit and sex ed all rolled into one. She was an angel and remains one of my fondest memories...but I still wouldn't want to be 15 again.
