Mea Culpa--Student story a hoax

A few days ago, I started a thread here based on a story from the Standard-Times about a UMass student who was visited by federal agents because he'd done an ILL request for Mao's Little Red Book. Turns out he was lying.

Clicky (http://www.southcoasttoday.com/daily/12-05/12-24-05/a01lo719.htm)

I figured that since I started the thread here, I had the responsibility to correct the record once I found out differently.

Very kind of you to do so and Merry Christmas to you Nazz.

Damn...pretty elaborate hoax, I guess, though I don't see why we need to frame the Bush administration for stuff they didn't do when I am sure there are plenty of things they DID do that we can blast them for.

Eh, everyone makes mistakes. The good posts far outweigh the bad, so keep on posting the things you find since they're always interesting.

And it's definitely a great thing that you corrected yourself afterwards...excellent form.

Hell, it could have just been an elaborate lie to get more time to complete a project--my girlfriend once had a kid fake a case of TB to get more time for a paper (she wound up being expelled).

C'est la vie.

Still, I think they should publish the little shits name, after getting everyone all upset like that. I suppose they don't want to his family to be bothered though.

I recall a few cries of BS back in the original thread.

As a side note, do you ever accept late projects/papers from students?

When I was a GRA at Tech, I took over a lab class from a TA that fell sick. Apparently, it was not unusual for this guy to take late labs from his students. When the first one tried that on me, he got the zero he deserved. Word got around and when I started teaching my own classes, I _never_ had a late assignment offered.

He probably only made up the story because he's an attention whore

Only if they've come to me well in advance with a reason for why it'll be late. Last minute excuses--never. After the fact--never. And I let them know that up front at the beginning of the term and as each deadline approaches. It's not a problem for me either.
