Baseball: U.S. Olympic bids hurt by ban on Cuba, IOC says
The New York Times, The Associated Press

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 16, 2005
U.S. bids to be host to future Olympic Games will be damaged by the U.S. government's decision to prevent Cuba from playing in the inaugural World Baseball Classic in March, according to a member of the International Olympic Committee.

The U.S. Treasury Department denied a request by Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association for a permit to allow Cuba to send a team.

"It's for baseball to decide, but if they don't make a stand on something like that, then they will have big problems down the road," Dick Pound, an International Olympic Committee member from Canada, said Thursday.

If not reversed, he said "it would completely scupper any bid" by the United States to stage a Summer or Winter Olympic Games.

Can someone tell Mayor Daley of Chicago so he doesn't blow another billion dollars on a useless sports stadium? I'd really like some lower taxes sometime this century. :p

Rather amusing, considering that Fidel Castro used to play baseball.

I hate the olympics. It was fun when it was a proxy for the ideological battle between communism and free market democracies, but now it is just a months long extravaganza for no-hopers with silly talents and their attendent arse kissers. So what if some dude throws a metal pole further than any other dude in history? Why should I give a fuck and, more importantly, why the fuck are you interupting my TV to tell me about it.

True, it has the chance to be entertaining again if China gets all powerful and shit, but that's not right now. Right now, all it is, is a huge waste of government money on the part of whichever son of a bitch nation gets to host it. (Not to mention the hassle of actually having the bastards descend on your city for six weeks and walk around generally being annoying to the regular residents. Let me tell you, you could hear the sighs of relief when NYCs silly bid by Bloomberg was flat out rejected. Of course, we refused to build a stadium, so that might be part of it).

Anyway, the way I see it, is by denying us the olympics, its only going to put pressure on any administration to continue isolating Cuba. If the stupid IOC really wants the US to change, it should threaten to host all future olympics in the US, until we start being nice to Castro.
