Not that much really. I generally don't make perverted sexual jokes when talking to kids though.

I usually lift my lip towards people that make eye contact-snarl if they get too close.

Sometimes I do, often I don't. I'm from a small urban area. Urban people often ignore the people around them on the street. Maybe it's because there are too many in close proximity and acknowledging all of them would be a time consuming pain in the ass. I'm usually in too much of a hurry to chat with people I don't know anyway.

I usually only talk with the people who strike up a conversation first and only if they don't creep me completely out. On occasion I strike up a small, meaningless convo with somebody. For example if I'm standing in line at a store and I see something interesting that the person in front of me is purchasing, I might comment on it. I wave at strangers when I'm driving just to see if they'll wave back. It's my personal test to see if humanity is going down the tube.

As a general rule, no. I'm not a people person, so I don't make with the small talk with random people.
I grew up in the country, and am back living there. So I greet everyone I see on the street...yes, it means you get slowed down, but that's just the way it is. In the city though, people think you're insane if you greet them, so I try hard not to. When someone greets ME though, I reply, and am happy. Even if they are insane. Stock answers are fine...as long as they are genuine.

DO you (or not) talk/smile/wave because its a weird thing to do, because your shy or because it jsut never crossed you mind?
I talk, because I'm female.
I smile, because this makes everybody feel better.
I wave, because... wait... I don't wave...
Do you think the world would be a 'better place' if everyone said hello to eachother?
Depends on how the say "hello".
Would you ever talk to a person you didn't know?
Do I know you?
Am I talking to you?
What would you think of people you don't know talking at you?
Depends on what they are saying.
How much would a perosns age, race or appearance affect you making contact with them?
Depends on what they are saying.
I guess I'd prefer a goodlooking young man asking me out, than a 50 year old in midlife-crisis, married and two kids at home

Let's be perfectly blunt here. I am not a "people person" by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, as a general rule, I hate most of humanity. So. No, not really.

DO you (or not) talk/smile/wave because its a weird thing to do, because your shy or because it jsut never crossed you mind?
It's beneficial to have the courage to acknowledge people.
Do you think the world would be a 'better place' if everyone said hello to eachother?
Yes. It might get a bit awkward from time to time, but acknowledging the existence of other people is a form of respect. I do think the world would be a better place if everyone managed to show even the slightest bit of respect to one another.
Would you ever talk to a person you didn't know?
Yes. The only way to get to know someone is to talk to them.
What would you think of people you don't know talking at you?
I would say that they were secure in their sense of self-worth. If one has nothing to offer, then there is nothing to share with others.
How much would a perosns age, race or appearance affect you making contact with them?
Very little. I think it could be a little awkward talking to small children without acknowledging their parents first, but that's about it.
How do you feel about programmed responses
Good. Programmed responses are a ritual. When one shares a ritual with another, it creates a sense of belonging.

Amused... especially when you ask a question they wernt expecting and they give the original answer still... then you have to pause while they work out what they said, what you actually asked, and what they wanted to say...

How do you feel about programmed responses[/QUOTE]
I personnaly think it's weird, you pick up the phone and there's a perfect voice talking on the other end.
Then you need to make a phone call and that voice is still talking, so you hang up the phone, wait five sec. then pick it up again and theres that voice still chattin away.
It happened to me the other day so I waited for like 5min while it told me exactly how to pick up my film at Walgreens, then, just when I think it's coming to an end it says "This message will repeat itself 3 more times"

yes i talk to people on the street
i say good morning or good afternoon to everyone i pass. i wave to those who are too far away, i make a witty response to anyone who says something more than hello to me as i pass them.
i wave to the cars i pass on the 2lane road that (almost) leads to my house.
i sometimes strike up silly convos with people im in line with or in the same elevator or "with" in some other random public way.

It depends on what the programmed response is. If someone were to say "pax vobiscum" to you and you were to reply with "um okay...", that wouldn't be of much value to either person, but if you were to reply with "et cum spiritum tuum", then everyone would be smiling from the exchange.

I talk to everyone, sometimes I probably talk too much and annoy people.
I try to smile at everyone, say hi, or compliment them. It doesn't take much time out of my day to try to make someone elses day a little better. I think I creep out parents when I talk to their kids though, although I have noticed it seems to bother them less when I have one of my kids with me. (that is unless they know me too well, and know that if their kids ask me questions that I am upfront and honest, then they try to keep their kids away from me)
Do you talk to people you don't know on the street?
Yes.
What about people you see every day?
Yes.
DO you (or not) talk/smile/wave because its a weird thing to do, because your shy or because it jsut never crossed you mind?
Not Applicable.
Do you think the world would be a 'better place' if everyone said hello to eachother?
Not necessarily - if everyone alway said hello to everyone they came into close proximity to, it would become a social convention whose absence signalled intentional rudeness, rather than a gesture of polite friendly intent.
Would you ever talk to a person you didn't know?
Yes
What would you think of people you don't know talking at you?
Depends on the interaction itself.
How much would a perosns age, race or appearance affect you making contact with them?
Again it depends, however, none of these variables would in isolation determine whether or not I spoke to someone.

Rarely. Smalltalk about the weather if initiated by the other person, but I try to get away as soon as possible.

Same thing
DO you (or not) talk/smile/wave because its a weird thing to do, because your shy or because it jsut never crossed you mind?
Shyness, I guess. And general fear of other people.

What would you think of people you don't know talking at you?
Scary

Almost none. But I genera;;y accept it a bit better if older people ask me something or comment about the weather.

depends on the situation and the person... i mean if i'm supposed to be working with someone who is, to me, a total stranger, for the day, then sure i'll talk to them.
but as for people i have absolutley nothing in common with (bar maybe waiting in the same queue or at the same bus-stop or whatever), then no probably not. in part its cos i'm shy, a lot of it is feeling weird and not knowing what to say or how they'll respond, but also i know when i'm standing alone in a queue and i'm in my own little world, i hate it when random strangers (who i have nothing in common with) strike up pointless conversations (and disturb my thinking).
people i see every day: usually, yes, after a while.
race/age/whatever doesn't bother me as long as they speak english.
and what programmed responses?

Do you talk to people you don't know on the street?
Sometimes. Usually because my daughter says hi to practically everybody, and waves, and expects them to say hi back. She's very persistant about repeating herself over and over until they acknowledge her, or she can't see them anymore. Women tend to be friendly and smile to her and say hi to both of us. Men vary more - some are very friendly, some won't make eye contact and pretend we don't exist. People with dogs are almost always friendly.
What about people you see every day?
Not many of those, but yes, at least to say hi or wave.
DO you (or not) talk/smile/wave because its a weird thing to do, because your shy or because it jsut never crossed you mind?
Because I'm shy - except my daughter kinda negates that.
Do you think the world would be a 'better place' if everyone said hello to eachother?
Yes, generally.
Would you ever talk to a person you didn't know?
Yes.
What would you think of people you don't know talking at you?
Nothing particular.
How much would a perosns age, race or appearance affect you making contact with them?
Not much, unless they were agressive, in which case their age, and appearance would matter only in terms of whether I feel threatened or not.
How do you feel about programmed responses
I tend to avoid using them, except in cases where I know the person couldn't care less, they're just being polite.
I'm a chatty fucker, and talk or wave/smile to almost anyone around me, especially if I have to spend more than 15 seconds in their presence.
The only people I shun are those who have nothing interesting to say, i.e., those under 21. :p
