I'll listen to any genre if I find a song I like well enough, but I tend to lean towards alternative.

For every genre of music that exists, you can probably find me at least one song in their that I'll like, or can learn to like. (Seriously, I'll hear a song, be all 'eh...' then a week later it'll be OMGMustlistentosong! Eyup)

I don't even have a specific genre that I usually stick to. I go in phases.

Grunge, old school punk, stoner rock, the blues, and certain types of metal. I picked metal.

I'm also partial to spanish folk music...though I can't say my knowledge in that field is particularly dense.

I can't believe you don't have classical on there. Beethoven and Bach are probably my favorites.

I like to PLAY Beethoven and Bach, but I often prefer to listen to later composers both of which are because their music is very mathematically correct. It makes it easier to play, but less interesting to my ears. I prefer latter eras of classical music where they started breaking the rules, but before they forgot the rules and started calling noise music.

Progressive and Power Metal. Stuff like Ayreon, Dream Theater, King Crimson, Blind Guardian, and Rhapsody. I like bands that either place a heavy emphasis upon instrumental ability or vocal mastery. I like other bands like System of a Down too, just because they have an original sound, but I really don't like a lot of modern 'metal.'

I prefer Baroque and Classical music to Romantic music ::resists making really really dorky musicological comments on the correct usage of the term "classical":: though I still like me a good Chopin, and the Leider and Melodie of Schubert and Liszt really can't be beat.

My favorite, though, would have to be Josquin des Prez

I don't have a "type" really.

Metal (of all kinds, particurlarly progressive), rock, blues, soul, classical, indie, alternative, disco, jazz, pop, punk, singer/songwriters, electronic/techno type things, funk... Some genres I like more than others (metal mainly, though I'm going through huge indie/alternative phase).

Just not my style. Short, angry, politically charged (I know I'm generalising, but most of them didn't have a clue what they were on about in regards to politics)... I'm just not a punk.

I have kind of Jam anthology, 49 of their best songs, and its good...

I'm not going to make any judgment on how easy/hard it is to play punk music because I myself am musically inept. It's just not my style (of music).

Include the Hives in the punk-that-I-do-like category. Although they're probably some strange sub-sub-genre of punk that I haven't heard of...

If it's non-political that interests you, I'd suggest anything out of the early 80s DC scene (which pretty much was the only DC scene).

For more complex (although quite odd sounding) Punk, I refer you to Mission of Burma (not my style, but avante garde in the oddest ways). The Minutemen are quite political, and their songs tend to run short, but they certainly have interesting music, in their own way.

Edit: and before Pot clubs me over the head for forgetting. :p

Husker Du is quite melodic and their songs aren't particularly short, plus they just damned well rock!

Their early stuff in particular is pretty raw punk. Heard anything by the Dead Kennedys? They were a big influence on them.
