I am "with" a ukrainian girl at the moment (i live in New Zealand, about as far away as you can get) and going to her place for tea tonight.

I was going to try and make a traditional dish from that kind of area (to impress her mum so was wondering what some good idea were? If anyone has any good recipies or knows of good dishes.

Thanks

Be prepared for Heavy bread, sour cream, pork products, cabbage, and frying, I think! Wonderful for a cold winter's christmas, but it'll be summer in NZ... Remember Ukrainians have a special sort of bread for christmas time 'special occasion' eating :)

My housekeeper is polish and she makes fantastic blintzes and gwampky(sp?). The former is definitely made in Ukraine, and is really good; sort of like e. european crepes:) . The latter is a acquired taste, but actually good smothered in ketchup. I assume chicken kiev is Ukranian, no?

Of course not. In Poland, it is MANDATORY to like cabbage stuffed with ground meat!:D

I kinda like it, myself and, as far as I know, don't have a drop of Polish blood in my veins. :p

Paluszki's (http://www.magma.ca/~pfeiffer/sharon/hors.htm) are Polish hors d'ouerves which aren't difficult to make. Cucumber salad or mizeria (http://www.magma.ca/~pfeiffer/sharon/salad.htm) is a fairly uncomplicated dish. Paczki are Polish doughnuts, you can find all kinds of variations of the recipe on the internet. Pierogies are also easy to make, and can be filled with anything she likes (beef, pork, mushrooms, cabbage, sausage, potatoes, and sauerkraut). Pasulj (http://www.recipesource.com/ethnic/europe/polish/00/rec0027.html) also makes for a good meal.

I'm Polish not Ukrainian, but these dishes are fairly easy to put together :).
