What do you study for fun? Or do you?

What do you study just because you like the subject and want to study it? Or do you study for pleasure? Why not?

I study cooking, evolutionary biology, astronomy, and language stuff.

I read for pleasure (encyclopedias and other material most would likely find boring)...

but I don't study for pleasure.

I hope nobody has mistakenly voted to convey that they study for pleasure when, in fact, they're merely reading.

History, particulary war history. And of that I have few weird targets of special interrest... Swiss pikemen, Vietnamese wars, Battle of Germany (AKA The War of Bombing) Iraq-Iran war, Spanish and Russian civil war and, above all, COSSACKS.
Just because of the sheer coolness. I have read every possible book about them, and trying my best to find even more.

So far (the most significant): C & C++ programming, (X)HTML coding, PHP coding, (re)mastering music with pretty much every kind of DSP software I have found, a bit of audio DSP programming, some general game programming, some basic compiler and virtual machine programming (to be used for my little game engine), a bit of Java programming (then I mostly lost intrest -- Java programming, while simple, is nearly as clumsy as programming in BASIC. So irritating and time consuming, and with half-assed outcomes)

I study ancient history, particularly the battles, but also the religions and the sociopolitical factors, where I can find evidence. I've spent quite a bit of money this year on books about the Romans :D

That said, I wouldn't say I was totally adept yet. whilst I know a LOT more than your average Joe, I'd need more books, and more time to learn them before I could call myself a walking encyclopedia in the area....

Particularly, however, I study the punics, and especially the second punic war and hannibals campaigns in Italy. Frustratingly, I've not picked up the two fundamental books by Polybius and Livy, but I've essentially read them by proxy, if you take my meaning. It's just not the same.

Having studied Livy I'd advise you to be aware of the fact that he was more concerned with the moral and literary value of his history, and that the vast majority, if not all, of the speeches contained therein are fabricated to portray particular character traits. That's not to say that he's inaccurate; far from it, I'd imagine, just something to bear in mind.

Anyway, back on topic, isn't fun the whole point of studying? I'm studying Classics formally for my degree, but I'm also keeping up my French and German with a view to doing some kind of post A Level qualifications next year, and I may well take up Mandarin next term. Apart from that I read quite a lot of political and philosophical material but that's just reading and not studying as such.

I was already made aware of this, but thanks for the heads-up anyway. Fabricated speeches were used a lot around his time, anyway though, no? From what I've read, Thucydides made up his own speeches for the peloponnesian wars.
Unfortunately Livy is a bit further down the list. I have about 10 books still to read.... that's what happens when you can't get in the mood to read for a whole year I guess. :(

Yeah I'm pretty sure that a fair few historians did it; it was probably necessary in a lot of cases as I doubt all speeches were recorded. Saying that though, Livy's the only historian I've studied in any great depth (I studied Herodotus for a bit last term but not in a lot of detail) so I may well be wrong.
I really need to get in the mood for reading, I've got exams coming up and my reading list for next term... Yay, the Aeneid...

I study math for fun. Actually, I kind of have fun at school in general, but math is the only subject I've taken initiative to find an independent study program for when I couldn't take a class in it.

I also constantly read up on chemical stuff on Wikipedia, dunno if that's "studying" or not. I still can't figure out how cyanide forms though.

And next summer I think I'll finish Howard Zinn's history book.

At some point in my life I want to read the Bible, Torah, Koran, Sutras, and whatever holy texts I can get my hands on for a comparative religion study.

So yeah, I like to study for fun.

History, military histroy, european history, not us history :p , strategy

Currently trying to read Carl von Clausewitz's On War. Hint: don't try this at home!

Anything history is my bag, except u.s. Is it me, or is u.s. history boring? Is that from having it drilled into my head for years?

I am even taking an extra independant study course on it.

Anyone remember the original Age of Empires? The first computer game I had was so full of history, I was hooked. Anyone else? You couldn't play that game and not learn.

Same here. Although history (my course) takes a back seat to music. Not just listening to music, but musical history, music theory, songwriting, the music industry, etc. Also, I'm kinda studying evolution, I've read a couple of Richard Dawkins' books, plus I have The Ascent of Man to read at some point. Not actually read The Descent of Man yet...maybe that would be a good idea.
