Currently, kids in Minnesota get summer off, from school...

But what happens when the ice and snow comes down, and HARD?

-------------

You're the top dog in Minnesota, and for the past 6 years, there has been no summer whatsoever. Summer-oriented businesses have gone bust while winter-oriented events are raking it all in. Farms are abandoned in favor of the warmer weather in the southern parts of the USA, so much of the food these days is imported from the farms down south. Experts are expecting this to continue for millenia.

One day, a bill reaches your desk, requesting that summer vacation for schools be cancelled. This means that kids would then have to go to school all year round, like in some of the other US states, because there's nothing for the kids to do outside and the beaches are all frozen.

Would you approve, or reject the bill, and why?

NOTE: This is a HYPOTHETICAL situation, not a real one. We still get hot summers, so don't worry! :)

Why not give them winter off and have them go to school in the summer?

Just extend the winter holiday period so families can really get away during that time.

Also, how the hell is it that cold in Minnesota? As far as I know, Calgary thaws out and that's so much further north.

Air currents and geography make weather work in an inunderstandable way.

The minnesota/canada border is at 49* north latitude. Calgary is at 51* north latitude, so not it's not THAT far up north. ;)

Ok, if flowers can grow at the south pole in the summer and stuff comes to life in the arctic, I'm pretty sure that Minnesota can thaw out.

Furthermore, Calgary is still further north than Minnesota.

The city where my family lives wants to shorten summer and extend winter of school vacation. The proposal was to do 4 weeks of alternating winter vacation, 1 week spring break, and only 7 weeks of summer (I think?). It made front page news. I am against proposals like yours and the city I live in.

kids need time away from school, wether that be winter time or summer time. its just cruel to tell that that they have to spend the entire year in school.

@Dakini, the weather I described in the Original Post would surely affect OTHER areas as well, not just minnesota. There's a reason I said "farms down south" instead of "farms to the west of us", because much of the same latitudes would also be affected worldwide, I belive, so if minnesota doesn't get summer for six years in a row, neither does the rest of the northern hemisphere. ;)

I'm saying that the rest of the northern hemisphere, even the arctic gets summer. I don't think Minnesota is freakishly cold.

Not during an ice age. :p

It will be once the next ice age comes. ;)

I hope it ain't that far off, cuz I'm eager to see the look on the weatherman's face once that first accumulating snowfall arrives at Cuba. :D

Average January Highs:

Minneapolis: 22F(-5C)
Duluth: 18F (-8C)
Calgary: 27F(-3C)
Edmonton: 18F(-8C)

Calgary may be farther north, but it's milder because Minneapolis doesn't get Chinook winds.

Maine does. (-30F last January!)

Minnesota, much like Michigan, gets all that wonder lake effect crap too. That wind off of Lake Superior is damned cold.

There will be rioting if it was passed. Some people would like to go places in Summer still like warmer places farther south?

It was -60F in january about one or two january's ago in the northern parts of minnesota. So yeah, minnesota DOES get "freakishly" cold in winter time every once in a while.

And dakini, flowers CAN'T grow in the south pole right now--the ice is too thick, over 1 km deep in many places. But perhaps in the future? ;)

it's a sign of the Ragnarok. School is the least of our worries in that scenario

Ragnarok is not a traditional armeggedon. Baldyr comes back and takes over after that as I remember and Baldyr and I are home boys (my job is to burn all that fucking mistletoe to ashes). So I have no worries.

while the north part has been covered

This is a hypthetical

We DO have summer (in fact when I was down in vegas last time it was warmer in minnesota in july for a few of the days)
not uncommon to see 90+ regularly

Wow, this is rediculous. I live IN Minneapolis, Minnesota, and summer is NOT as bad as you described it. Every single lake thaws out, we still have squirt gun fights and 99º days, it's been over 100º*as well, I still have to have an airconditioner because it gets too damn hot, a new water park just opened up a mile from my house, and I'll be goddamned if somebody is trying to gip my out of my summer vacation because it's "too cold and frozen." I got heakstroke last summer working on a Habitat house 2 BLOCKS from where I live. Somebody lied to you, they want to make school go through summer because then they won't have to reteach in september and can keep moving along, not because there is nothing to do.

Poll coming...

so Minnesota is now in the southern hemisphere?

I know they (like wisconsin) occasionally get snow in May, but June/July/August are safe from the white stuff. In fact, parts of northern Minnesota and northern Wisconsin are summer haven for tourists from such metropolitan areas as Chicago, Milwaukee and Minneapolis-St. Paul
