2005 in Pictures

Well, the year is almost over. How about we summarise it in pictures?

Find a picture that you think is a good summary of the year, or just shows things that you think were important. If you want, add a commentary.

I'll start with something funny:

http://img422.imageshack.us/img422/1946/bd54em.jpg

It hasn't been an easy year for Bush. After his reelection he meant to do everything differently. Instead, he ran from one closed door to the next, in so many different ways...

Why do space photos all look computer animated? Are they computer enhanced? If they are, why can't we see some of the raw photos?

I'm not being snarky, I really just don't know.

The Cassini mission went to Saturn.

Also, we can't make visual observations of the distant planets around other stars, we can just see the effect of their gravitational pull on their parent star.

They might have enhanced the colour, Saturn's not supposed to be terribly colourful. But other than that, that's how it looks. (Hell, I'm not even sure if they did touch that one up)

Yes, that's computer enhanced.

Here's a raw image:

NASA is pretty good about providing raw images and data ever since the Cydonia face thing.

Sometimes images are processed to bring out details, and sometimes they are processed to show other info (for example temperature).

But I think sometimes they just do it because it looks cool.

The follow up; religious leaders claimed that New Orleans was punished because of its tolerance of homosexuality - what they failed to take into account, the gayest part of the city, the French Quarter, was the one that was in the best shape afterwards.

It's because there is no atmosphere to diffuse light. Edges look much sharper and the definition is really high because there's no atmospheric diffusion from either molecules or dust.

Huh, that's relatively solid and makes total sense. I'll buy it, even though I would think it would create it's own, third look rather than looking like computer animation, but the way computer animation is done it makes sense.

Thanks.

This dramatic event in my town happened on Nov 10th, 2004, just one year and a month ago, not exactly a 2005 event but close enough. Everyone should see this...

http://img472.imageshack.us/img472/3429/normalimg85940hg.jpg
Started out with this.

http://img463.imageshack.us/img463/4787/normalimg86094as.jpg
A former US army building from WWII, the Elizabeth Apartment houses 100+ low income residents.

http://img463.imageshack.us/img463/4425/normalimg86263td.jpg
http://img389.imageshack.us/img389/1949/normalddone34vi.jpg
http://img389.imageshack.us/img389/6625/file35mh.jpg
No firealarms and sprinkler system working, some residents of the apartment are unaware their home is on fire. Residents who are aware about the fire knocked every door to tell their unaware neighbours to get out. Fortunately, everybody got out of their burning home.

http://img398.imageshack.us/img398/4778/022nn.jpg
http://img398.imageshack.us/img398/1304/normalfiar7po.jpg

Smoke can be seen all over the city.

http://img523.imageshack.us/img523/4343/16448232154cb524ao8bs.jpg
Unfortunately, the historic WWII era building cannot be saved.

http://img523.imageshack.us/img523/8069/img39599ow.jpg
What was left of the apartment.

Cause of the fire: Kitchen fire.

One thing I know it that most of them are composed of dozens of separate photos stuck together (sort of like a panorama). If they are enhanced perhaps the originals are too noisy for the space agency to release?

Another point to consider is that in space there is no air to cloud the lenses vision. Since you have looked at things through air all your life, visions through a vacuum will of course look strange.
