How much sleep do you get?

Strobovia

I made this thread half asleep around 1am.

I was wondering if I was the only one up this late (I know I'm not but anyways)

Um right here's the deal. How much sleep do you get on average each night?
(or day if you work at night)

If I don't get a minimum of seven hours, my arguments begin to deteriorate. Then again, there are those who alledge that my arguments don't hold any water anyway. :D

I'm a bad insomniac...usually about 6 hours. It's a good idea to ask age, since it helps determine sleep requirements. I'm almost 14.

recently, not much at all... I went without for five days last week, possibly a little longer... I dont recall - things were pretty hazy. I may or may not have slept on drive back to my hometown... though if that was the case, Im not sure how I made it.

I managed to sleep for a few hours there, and then, back into the cycle, until last night - I slept for almost a full six hours. That may have been about five days again... but as before, Im not quite sure - its all a little hazy. Stress and sadness can accomplish some amazing things.

Actually, unless you're over about 75 or so, or under about three or four, your age has little to do with how much sleep you require. What does have an impact is your level of brain activity; the more you utilize your brain, the more sleep you require.

I've been keeping track of a lot of stuff, one of them being bedtime and the amount of sleep I get. Out of the data I have of 35 days, this is what I have.

My average bedtime is 54.6 minutes after midnight. My average amount of sleep is 7 hours, comprised of 6.5 hours of sleep at night with an additional 0.5 hours of sleep somewhere during the day (naps and such).

I usually can't fall asleep until at least 4am though the average is 5am. Sometimes I don't get any sleep at all for 24 to 28 hours. When I do get my brain to shut down enough to fall asleep it lasts anywhere from 3 hours to 12 depending on the circumstances. My average amount of sleep is 4 hours. I have to wait until I become thoroughly exhausted to get any kind of "normal" sleep.

It's difficult to give an exact amout of hours for me.
I'm normally in bed between 10.30 pm - 5.30 am, but most of that time, I'm struggling against nightmares. I don't sleep really deeply, but rather doze off and snap back awake again, constantly afraid of what my own brain will do to me once I drop my guard.

I find the best I can do against it is change circumstances, like going to bed either really really early (almost afternoon) or really really late (almost morning). I can sleep a lot easier when it's light outside, but I can't sleep with the lights on in my room. It also helps to listen to audiobooks, best of all childrens stories, to fall asleep. Another thing that sometimes works is just lying in bed the wrong way around, with my head at the foot end...
I'm doing strange things just to get some quiet sleep without nightmares.

My sleeping patterns are half-dead. Sometimes I sleep around 8-9 hours, sometimes none, and during periods of school, I sometimes sleep twice. (typically once after school, and then again later after I have eaten) And then, when I, once in a while, have been awake for over 30 hours, I can sleep for around 10-11 hours if given the chance.

My bedtime is usually 3-6am. I usually get up at anywhere from 8-4. Last night I got about 5 hours sleep.

I've been known to survive for several days with no sleep without anyone really noticing. Yay for caffeine.

Casual work, y'see. I usually work nights, but then they'll throw a 6am shift into the mix which screws things up. So I generally don't bother. When i'm at uni, it's even worse. I can be at uni from 9-5, and work past midnight. So I get into stupid patterns.

Caffeine. And lots of it.

There's um...other stuff, too, but I don't recommend that.

You also eventually get used to it if you do it often enough, you learn to block out the tiredness. Of course, when you *do* get to sleep, you'll be comatose, but eh. *shrugs*

My main advice- if you're only going to get less than 4 hours sleep, don't bother, because you'll just feel worse. You need at least an hour of truly deep sleep to feel rested.

Far from enough last night....

Doesn't anybody know of a way to completely get rid of nightmares? :(

It depends on what's causing the nightmares.

I used to have horrible night terrors. I would sort of half way wake up but still be dreaming and think that the wall was falling in on me or that I was covered with bugs or such. So I'd fling myself out of bed and turn on all the lights. Then I would have to calm down from the adrenaline rush before I could go back to bed. I was getting very little sleep.

For me it turned out to be a combination of chronic pain and stress causing it. When I quit working and found a decent pain management program, the nightmares went away.

So the only way to get rid of the nightmares is to address what is causing them. Either that or just get so plasterd that you pass out every night. ;) But I wouldn't recomend that.

Also, in an earlier post you said you sleep well when it is light out. I'm the same way. I get my deepest, most restful sleep between sunrise and around 10am in a room with an eastern exposure. So I've always tried to schedule everything so that I can be in bed at that time. I took evening classes in college and worked afternoon or night jobs. If you don't already do that, it might help some if you do.

As for the OPs question, I get between 9 and 12 hours of sleep a night. Less than 9 and I don't function well mentally or physically. More than 12 and I get all head-achey and just feel blah all day.

It depends, really. If it's a good week, I'll get eight to nine hours of sleep, and I'll be up and running early in the morning.

If it's a bad week (so far, it's been a bad month), I'll get anywhere from ten to fifteen hours of sleep. When I wake up in this condition, I feel like shit.

Quick Draw McGraw.....

Wow that is really weird getting only 5 will do the same for me and at that stage if i do it for long enough i fall asleep on my feet only to fall forward and that doesn't feel good.

Getting only five hours of sleep does less damage to me than getting over ten.

Yeah. I felt better with an average of six hours of sleep two years ago than I do with an average of ten-plus hours a night the past few months.

An average night of sleep for me is between 9 and 12 hours. On days I go to school, between 6 and 8.

If I'm really lucky I've been known to have 4 hours sleep. I reckon running Hognatia must really take it out of me. :headbang:

I do try for a good 8hrs every night but generally get caught up ina book or an interesting bit of randomness on the internet and get between 6-7, i cna get by for a week with only 7 hrs each night but anythign elss and i really suffer (oddly enough i tend to feel sleepy during the day but after about 8pm i waken up...).

As for over sleeping i can udnerstand that if i go over the 10hr mark i spend the next day almsot totally zombiefied.

When at school, I fall asleep about 2 oclock and wake up about 7 oclock, so 5 hours. Weekends and holidays, I sleep from about 2-3 oclock until 19-11 oclock, so 6-9 hours.

edit: I'm used to functioning on not much sleep during the week so I am fine, but I'd probably be a lot better with more sleep. I also get exhaustion and fatigue from depression, so, when combined, it isn't great.

I'm currently recovering (sleeping around 10 hours) from two weeks of way too much work, on which I woke up at 6am and went to bed around 1am. If I'm OK, 8 hours do fine.

I get five hours, tops. Often I'll only doze for an hour or so, when I sleep at all. If I have anything with caffiene after about 5pm or if I have something serios on my mind, I won't sleep.

Um right here's the deal. How much sleep do you get on average each night?
(or day if you work at night)
Not much, generally...maybe six hours or so, broken sleep...which for some is a lot, but pre-kids, I slept a solid 8 hours. I wake up at least twice...usually once to help my toddler go to the bathroom, and another time to get the baby to go back to sleep. I thought for the first year after having my first child that I was going to go insane from lack of sleep. I was right:D
