Politcians have been targeting video games as cause for murder and bloodshed, but it seems that they have been missing the real culprit all the time. It's Barbie!

Barbie Dolls Lead to Mutilation, Torture

So are video games off the hook?

According to a report on CBC (http://www.cbc.ca/story/world/national/2005/12/19/barbie-study-051219.html), a new study claims that mutilation and "torture" of Barbie dolls is common among young girls.

Researchers at the University of Bath have been looking into the effects of product branding and marketing on children aged seven to 11. They concluded that among products tested, Barbie provoked the most intense feelings.

"The doll provoked rejection, hatred and violence," said Agnes Nairn, a marketing professor in the university's school of management.

"The girls we spoke to see Barbie torture as a legitimate play activity, and see the torture as a 'cool' activity in contrast to other forms of play with the doll. The types of mutilation are varied and creative, and range from removing the hair to decapitation, burning, breaking and even microwaving."

Researchers suggested a variety of motivations for the behavior, most commonly that the girls felt they had outgrown playing with Barbie.

"It's as though disavowing Barbie is a rite of passage and a rejection of their past," said Nairn.

Mattel, which makes and sells Barbie, dismissed the results of the study, saying that annual sales totaling 94,000,000 Barbies prove that the doll is beloved.

GP: I don't even want to tell you what I did to my G.I. Joe's back in the day...

Thanks to GP regular Jabrwock for the heads-up... Your microwaved Barbie is in the mail.

Well... After my sister got sick of some of her old barbies let's just say I had some "fun" with them...

Until they all went up in flames after I poured some vodka on them and lit them up after several hours of mutilation!http://67.18.37.14/32/176/emo/FIREdevil.gif

Confess! How did you treat your Barbies and your Kens?
I remember once my mom bought me an off brand Barbie-type doll that came in a swimsuit, I wanted to put her in a dress (that fit my Barbies) but her hips were too wide, so my cousin said that she should exercise "a few miles a day of jogging and she could melt off those thighs"

which gave me an idea............flash forward 18 years, there is still a generic Barbie that is melted inside my E-Z Bake oven  :p

I never mutilated my barbies... unless you count decapitating her, removing all her limbs, hanging her, stabbing her, etc. ... anyway, we also had orgies, barbie strip teases and well, you get the picture. Our usual game was that the one barbie was the "babysitter" and the others always ended up killing her, or tortoring her in some form or other. That, and the G.I. Joes blew her up, and stole and rode the My Little Ponies. Which isn't even to get INTO what we did with the dollhouse family.

*puts down shovel, reaches into the quicksand, grabs some of the precious toys, and looks around*

I don't think I ever destroyed my sister's barbies purposely.
