I've always loved the Desiderata ( http://hobbes.ncsa.uiuc.edu/desiderata.html)...even though it is somewhat of a cliche, I think it contains some good information. In particular, a phrase that has always stuck with me is, "Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit." And I do. Avoid them I mean.

The older I get, the more I avoid people. Not because I want to close myself off, but because certain personalities annoy me, or make me uncomfortable. People who like to grandstand, for example...I avoid them because I know they will eventually want to make me look bad in order to make themselves look good. I avoid gossips, because I've learned the hard way that NOTHING is ever said in confidence. Unless you want someone hearing your comments, keep them to yourself. I avoid people with extremely low-self esteem, because they tend to become clingy the second you show them the least kindness. I avoid 'artsy' people...not all of them mind you, just a certain subset of those who are always 'on stage'. You know the kind...the ones who talk to you with their eyes scanning the crowd to make sure they are having an impact on others just by being there.

I don't surround myself with people who are just like me, or who think like I do...I'm not that masochistic. But I realised today that I 'filter' people, and quite often that process is based on first impressions, or surface impressions. And that doesn't bother me at all.

Ooooh....I HATE that! My father-in-law slurps his soup and it sounds like a friggin' vacume cleaner trying to pick up coffee off cement. Yes, I know what that sounds like. Don't ask. I don't avoid people based on that alone...but I do avoid eating with them...or being around them when they eat.

I also avoid craggly, bearded Dutchmen in overalls, checkered flannel shirts and rubber boots...but you'll notice I make an exception for you:)

I tend to try to avoid sociopaths (http://home.datawest.net/esn-recovery/artcls/socio.htm) (yes I know a few) and people who gossip.

Young children and babies.
I most likely will get flamed for that, but I just don't really like their company (talk about loud and aggressive ;) ), so I just avoid them wherever possible

i avoid obviously crazy people. they tend to be either sticky or dangerous.

Don't worry...I avoided them like the plague until I had my own. And I still only like my own children.

No, just kidding. I actually have warmed up to some other people's kids too. Just not many. I think I'd like Smunkee's brats.

I used to hate kids too. I vowed never to have any. To this day there are only 2 kids in the entire world that don't annoy me to the point of tears, and they are mine. ;)

But I enjoy diversity.

ignorant and/or petty people, i cant stand them and they cant stand me. usually tend to play really immature pranks and think they are the centre of the world but are really shallow too so theyre not egotistical in the typical sense. perfect products of the flattered self late stage capitalist society we live in today.

Also hate authoritarian people. I dont follow orders or purposefully conform to the expectations of other people which are in conflict with my own so theres always problems with those types.

It's also unrealistic to open yourself up to every single person who comes along, and give them all and equal shot at friendship. You 'click' with certain people, and don't with others. That's just life.

i agree there. i still try to tolerate everyone and be nice to people who i dont like. buts its still best to have as little to do with your opposites as possible given that either they or you will enter into some form of conflict.

Seriously, there's no chance in hell I'll ever have kids... I survived having to look after my two younger brothers and 15 cousins for a regular 6 weeks per year, no more kids for me thank you. Ever.

Lip smacking is the worst for me, I will immediately leave the room if I can simply hear somebody eating, it literally drives me crazy, I can't think straight. My little brother had it rough, he had a tendency to chew with his mouth open, and it was rare for a meal to go by without me bitching at him.

Oh, other people I avoid? Guys who refer to women as 'sluts, slutbags, whores, tramps, bitches' etc...and mean it. Christ on a stick.

The internet is different to real life. Everyone here is either a smart person who doesn't know when ti shut up, or a stupid person who doesn't know when to shut up. Given the choice, I'll sit here and make jokes about everyone.:p

In general,I avoid most people. Its not obvious,though. If I dont want to deal with you, you'll never see me.

I also seem to have a sixth sense that my wife calls "freak radar". I have identified nut cases, freaks and other undesireables at a distance. People with me dont believe me and then they get proven wrong. I dont think its anything special-I am just very observant. I dont miss anything.
So- I avoid a long list of people that may have an agenda/issue/hygiene I dont want to experience.
It serves me well. I'm never sick and I dont buy things I dont need.

I tend to avoid disgustingly rich and famous people, but I'm wondering if I should change my ways and try something new...

I tend to avoid people who talk about other people all the fucking time. I mean, sometimes a little gossip is ok, but jesus fucking christ, sometimes it's just none of their business and it's incredibly aggravating to hear about all this dumb shit that doesn't really matter, and then when you try to have a conversation that's you know, about something, they say moronic things and steer the conversation back to their stupid friends and who's "talking shit" and how that somehow affects them, even though it shouldn't at all.

Can you tell that people like that frustrate me?
