Breitenburg
20-12-2005, 19:48
The years coming to an end, so I wondered what people thought was the best game. The categories are console(ps2,gc,xbox,360),handheld(gba,ds,psp)and the PC.

My choices were console- Resident Evil 4(Gamecube)
handheld- Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow(DS)
PC- Age of Empires 3

any game from 2005 is eligible, even if you liked it and everyone else hated it.

Join a tourney, like 21st Century Warfare, you'll be playing BF2 till Xbox 3.

It's hard to come up with a good gaming year after '04, with San Andreas, Ace Combat 5, Halo 2, and Half Life 2 all coming out within weeks if not days of one another.

Best PC Game - World of Warcraft ( BTW, a game made a few years back is still eligible. It is based on how many coppies sold and a collective of good reviews. )
Best Action PC Game - Battlefield 2
Best Strategy PC Game - Rome Total War: Barbarian Invasion
Best Roleplaying PC Game ( not MMO ) - Knights of the Old Republic II: Sith Lords

Best Console Game - Halo 2
Best XBox Game - Halo 2/Fable
Best Gamecube Game - Resident Evil 4
Best Play Station 2 Game - Killzone
Best Roleplaying Console Game - Fable
Best Action/Adventure Console Game - Resident Evil 4
Best FPS Console Game - Halo 2
Most Innovative Console Game - Fable

And handheld is NOT my department.

Pheh....back in my day, our games were creative and made to last!

I guess Civilization IV, it's the only one that stands out.

I would say Starcraft Ghost.....-.-, but that will have to wait another year. G-d Willing.

Civ 4.

GTA San Andreas seems cool, but of course, it's naughty and therefore banned.

haven't played it yet, but judging from the reviews I've read they simplified things (like having only one type of ammo instead of different ammo for different guns, fusing lockpicks and multitools, etc.) to allow for easier porting to ps2, made the locations a lot smaller and messed up the story... so, while I'm not saying it's automatically a bad game, I doubt I would like it more than Deus Ex 1 ;)

I'm with PM; I'm a bit lazy these days when it comes to gaming so am going to say GTA:SA as it's one of the few that came out this year that I still play and still love.

GTA - San Andreas hands down - no competition. When you thought the franchise couldn't get any better... (I can't recall if it came out for PS2 this year or last but it was released for Xbox and PC this year).

Fable - good game - too short (and easy) to be a "best" game - sorry - I bought it on the discount shelf for $20 already - nuff said

Hehe..i'm currently playing through the whole series AGAIN.

Started with a mage in the original Baldurs Gate....then did the Sword Coast expansion, imported into BGII, and i'm going to play through ToB as well. :)

Console-Resident Evil 4 - More addictive than any other game I played this year, though God of War is up there.

PC- F.E.A.R. - Call of Duty 2 was fun, but this shooter also managed to scare the crap out of me at some points, so it wins.

yeah Deus Ex was the greatest game ever made for the PC but Deus Ex 2 was just a sad, sad sequel. it had a cool storyline and some interesting rpg elements but overall it was just massively disapointing

console: Resident Evil 4(GC version>PS2 version imo)
handheld: tough call. Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow was cool, but Mario Kart is still as good as ever. Tie-CDoS+MKDS
Xbox-GTA:SA? Halo 2 doesn't count. It came out in '04, unless you're European or Aussie, I guess.
Gamecube(non-game of the year)-Starfox Assault was fun, I guess.
PS2-Damn it. Been a bad last few months for the PS2. Absolutely horrible.
Xbox 360-Call of Duty 2-by far.
DS(again, not counting game of the year)-Advance Wars: Dual Strike
PSP-horrible, horrible year. Con would have won if it wan't for it's 40-120 second long load times in between 2-3 minutes of gameplay. GTA, even though the franchise hasn't really evolved at all since GTAIII. It got bigger. Big whooptydo. More guns. Oh my, more. More is innovative, isn't it? Better graphics-not really. It doesn't need to change- Niether did Zelda or Mario or Metroid or even Sonic(definitely not Sonic), but they did anyway. Resident Evil has RE4, which is a vast improvement from the unusual combo of tank-controls and fixed camera angles. GTA's still fun, I guess. Just needs some retooling.

Personally I would have to go with Dawn of War: Winter assult, because that was the only game made in 2005 that really caugh my atttention for more than a few hours. If oblivion had come out on sceduel (sp?) i would have gone with that, but alas nothing comes out when it should

Yeah, I voted for Winter Assault too; and Guild Wars. I beta tested DoW so no mystery there; I think it's the best RTS title I've played so far.

Also, I'm astonished that someone would even mention "Halo 2" and "Game of the Year" in the same sentence. Halo 2 has little or no functional differences between it and Halo 1: it's the same damn game with marginally better graphics and a handful of new weapons. It's years behind the curve as far as any other FPS title goes: you can't go prone, you can't lean, and there is no alternate fire mode on the guns. Compared to nearly any other FPS, Halo 2 is remarkably sub-par.

It's from 2001 in fact. But it's still a damn good game. Definitely an all time favorite for me.

I haven't really played many video games this year, but one I did play and absolutely loved was Rome: Total War. I guess that's my pick for PC, but I am getting Civ IV for Christmas so maybe I'll like that better. Handheld, I've only played DS and not all that much. I'm getting Mario Kart for Christmas. I have Gamecube but I really don't have time to play video games, let alone for 3 systems, and I don't think I purchased a single game this year.

Guild Wars, bar none.
The game is so incredibly deep strategically, the interplay of various class' abilities in tandem with each other that make up any given match is a joy to behold. Figuring out the enemy's "build," their strategy, and using what you have on-hand to counter it is very satisfying. The fact that you only have 8 skills per character, and 8 characters per team to use at any one time (64 skills overall) gives the pre-game strategizing a decidedly Magic-like feel, where you have to construct your deck. The game is very satisfying when your 8-man group works as a well-oiled machine, calling out over ventrilo (don't even try competitive PvP if you don't have voicechat!) enemy movements and strategies, coordinating on the fly just what needs to be done quickly enough to win the match. Simply put, it's the most sublime competitive experience ever created, bar none, combining the strategy of Magic or Starcraft with the game-modes of counterstrike, and the quick thinking needed in those shooter games.

2001??? Are you not thinking of Civ III?
IV was the best game of the year IMHO - followed closely by Ace Combat 5.
Looking to next year - Ace Combat Zero!

FEAR is certainly the most overrated game of the year.

Lots of nominations for Civ4... is it really that good? I was quite unimpressed with Civ3.
