All digital tv by 2009.

Congress has the final date when everyone in the US has to have digital television and networks have to broadcast in digital.
What kind of bullshit is this? This is not important. It is even less important to legislate this kind of thing. Groups trying to distribute free broadband internet in cities are getting shut down by megacorporations, Japan has large numbers of people with broadband and higher internet access and last I heard is developing the ability to deliver high speed internet through electric sockets and the US is trying to make everyone convert to receiving digital television signals.
They are also going to finance this low priority idea. Now that is really nice and all, but why waste time and money financing this? I think the government should get on more important things like making widely available, low priced broadband internet to all people and places instead of trying to have all networks and people convert to using digital television.
this is much more important than you'd think. Many of the bands being taken away from television services will be given to public safety groups like firefighters and police, whose current reserved bands are not as good. Most support for the transition was a result of radio trouble experienced by rescue workers on Sep. 11 and during Hurricane Katrina.

Pfft. Way ahead of you there - no more analog where I live. The transition will be over by the end of next year throughout the country.
EDIT: And for Pete's sake, please fix that link.

Yup, then maybe finally we don't have to pay for the horrible public service channels! :D
... I'm not too hopeful though... tv-tax isn't going anywhere soon... *sigh*

Correction: Sweden is currently in the process of closing down the analogue broadcasts. By the time we're done - in 2008 - broadband TV will probably have replaced terrestrial digital TV as the superior option.

I enjoy SVT, thankyouverymuch.

You could always not pay it. *ahem* *ahem*

I thought I wrote that. It's off where I live. Haven't had analog in years, though, because I had digital cable.

I read start of 2007. And, I quite doubt your last assertion.

That's fine by me, I would just prefer if they made it a ppv-channel instead, then I wouldn't have to pay for it:)

Well... I don't... but I don't like the principle either... :(

2008, according to the Digital TV Commission. They should know (I hope).
Public service is wonderful. Without it, Sweden might degenerate into the USA.
Just because we aren't democratic socialists doesn' mean most of us are a bunch of hulking barbarians you know.

america has only just passed this? and they claim to be leaders in technology? here in AU, this was legislated a good 2 - 3, if not more years ago, and analog is supposed to be phased out by 2008. i doubt that it would be cut before then, because they are waiting for the tvs and set top boxes to come down in price. trust AU to go with HD, not SD
