What if God 'revealed' himself?

Suppose God (doesn't matter which religion's God) revealed himself and turned out to be a misogynistic homophobe with an astonishing range of food intolerances and sexual hang-ups...

Would you change the way you lived your life? Or would you feel that even though He is the Creator, He is showing a lack of respect towards humanity?

if god were to come to Earth and claim he was god, we would do the same to him as we would the rest of those people. Lock them up in the nice white walled wards w/ the funny jackets and excess of meds.

I'd want to see God reveal himself.

I bet he's hung like an elephant

One of the reasons I *oppose* several of the major organised religions is that most of them actually portray God in such a manner.

However, even if God revealed Himself to be noble, capable, just, full of love etc. despite all the negative PR those religions have been giving Him it still wouldn't mean I would worship Him. I would "just" respect Him and value His opinion highly.

If He reveals Himself to be just etc AND a misogynistic homophobe+ rest; it depends on how He justifies it. Maybe He really has a better moral system - but in this case I would like to see some proof first.

I worship no-one, neither do I bend my own beliefs for anyone. He could do his worst; I'd be there to destroy his ego with harsh sarcastic remarks that he wouldn't soon forget. To hell with god!

I'd tell him to go fuck himself and would petition that Satan make me a high ranking officer in his army. If that's what God is, I'd want to spend my afterlife fighting it too.

I'd walk up to him, tell him thank you for all the pain and suffering on earth, and punch him square in the mouth.

Then whatever happened after that, I guess I'd just have to deal with it.

But I'd definately deck his cruel ass.

God is, theoretically, completely good and all knowing. If he came to earth and revealed that his ideas of right and wrong were different from my ideas of right and wrong, I would change my ideas.

Thought you were already a high ranking officer in the army of Satan?

That is the only way to become a moderator isn't it?

Well said. For once we agree on something. I would say "Hey, I just got finished reading Book of Numbers chapter 11!"

I would start my own Religion.

The Grand and Glorious Holy Church of Joshuaism

Melkor can be my "high" priest (when I say High, I mean he has to be in a state of perpetual drug stupor 24/7, one of the rules of my new religion).

Who would join me in defying the Homophobic/Lactose Intolerant God with the Hedonistic religion of Joshuaism?

I would, but I'd be very busy with The First And Most Righteous Church of Omnigamy, of which I am the Right Honourable Grand High Poo-Bah Leader. With God's highly restrictive policies on sex and marraige my 'hump/marry pretty much anything' belief will be very popular.

Without question ?
If he could actually *convince* me His morals are better, justifying them with well backed up arguments - agreed. But Him just saying so would not be enough.

This is assuming he is God in the Xtian Supreme Creator Uberbeing sense, as opposed to merely a Zeus style figurehead or Chinese Supreme Beurocrat:

I'd follow him on the condition that he accepts human sacrifices. You have no business being an Evil Deity unless you are willing to consume the souls of the unworthy, and I, as a potential Dark Priest, won't truck with anything less.
Really, people, it's God, he wins. Playing for the losing side isn't on my short list of things to do.

But if he's all knowing then he'd know if you secretly hated him but followed him out of fear. If you disagreed with him then you'd have nothing to lose by opening opposing him.

I was thinking something along these lines today. The question of wether you think God exists or not is irrelevant. The better question would be does one believe in God?

I figure the best way to find the answer would be the "Abraham Test". Read Genesis 22 and answer the following question: Would you have made the same decision as Abraham?

It is a bit of a double bind though. If you answer yes, then you are potentially a religious psychopath. If you answer no, then you don't really believe in God after all.

Please don't post your answer here. Just something I wanted to put out there as food for thought.

Interesting point. Does belief in God neccessarily entail obediance to God? Surely it would be possible to believe in God but to defy His will or are you saying that somebody who truly believed would accept God as infallible and blindly follow His orders?

Correct, there is nothing worth dying for. This is what I have, no second chances and nothing next on the agenda, so I'm not about to piss it away.
There are things I'd suffer for and things I'd kill for, but nothing I'd throw away my life or cross a God who (apparently) really cares about whether I follow him or not.

But if he's all knowing then he'd know if you secretly hated him but followed him out of fear. If you disagreed with him then you'd have nothing to lose by opening opposing him.
Somehow, I find it hard to believe that this theoretical God is going to get many followers more genuine than I. And it wouldn't be just fear that motivated my actions, there would also be personal ambition (can you think of any coat tails with more pulling capacity than those of the Almighty?), respect (Ultimate Power demands Ultimate Respect), and the hope that he might hit me up with a little bit of Divine Knowledge (I've got a few questions that I'll never get answered with only mortal means).

The question is probably better summed up as does one believe in God or does one believe in the moral code that was derived from the Bible?

If one defies the will of God, then God's will is irrelevant to a person's sense of morality. If one truly believed in God, then they would blindly follow his direction.

After humping God's leg (assuming there are legs to hump), I'd point out that Free Will was a really bad idea and if the atheists and heathens are hellbound for using Free Will, then I may as well go too cuz it would be a lot more fun.

Afterwards, I'd buy a round of beers and engage in strong man contests with God. Once God's drunk and sore, I'd slap him (assuming God's a him) squarely in the face (assuming there's a face) for creating so much that he (assuming God's a he) hates.

I'd ask him why he didn't make this appearance a little sooner and save us all the trouble of debating his existence. Of, course if he revealed himself I'd surely be going to hell anyway so I'd kick him in the balls for making women the ones who have to give birth. Sadistic bastard.
