The Last Sell Out

When punk and industrial sold out I figured that was pretty much it, no scene left unexploited, nothing is untouchable.

(Incidently, I had a friend who thought industrial wouldn't. I was able to predict the magazine headline that would indicate that it has happened. I'm sure you can guess what it was...)

Well, this (http://shop.orangecountychoppers.com/nshop/product.php?view=listing&groupName=fragrance) would be the proof. It can be argued that the custom chopper scene sell out happened with Motorcycle Mania and American Chopper(I'll admit that I actually like American Chopper and it has instilled a desire for a chopper, but I like the old school and I feel it would be poserish to buy one. Even if I made a kind of dumpy one by bolting things on it I'd feel better about riding the chopper. Not that I would ever be able to avoid being a poser on a chopper...) Maybe it was when companies existed that would sell $80,000 custom bikes. But when the folks from American Chopper (Orange County Choppers) put out a fragrance...the ship has sailed.

Granted, in every scene that has been sold down the river there are people who've been true to the scene and resent the tourists in thier digs, but there is no stone that will be left unexploited.

Maybe the sign was when they started selling designer clothes made to look as if they where bought at a thrift store...

Who thinks they have a sell-out proof scene? What will be next to sell themselves out?

Well, first of all, I applaud you on your little segment about choppers! I 100% agree! I'd rather bolt one together myself and paint it with a can, then hop on the "bog dog" bandwagon.

As for a scene that hasn't sold out, does it matter if there are people who are trying to be posers to it or not? Because I have one, but alot of people buy stickers and what not, but the scene remains true. Now don't laugh, ok?

Rednecks. They are who they are, stained jeans and all. ;)

True punk never dies out. I'd like to see a coca-cola add in a squathouse:p

You don't think that things like Foxworthy and Blue Collar TV aren't setting up the sell out shop for rednecks?

And yeah, like I said, there are people who are still true to the scenes regardless of a sell out. But it's like being a fan of a team that sucked for a really long time that all of sudden does well-no one questioned your fandom when they sucked, but once they're good 'cred' becomes a question, which is just a hassle.

Everything and everyone sells out eventually... Then the scene (whatever it is) is revitalized 5-10 years later by a new group of people and then that scene sells out as well.

It's the cycle of things.

But I have seen books written by squaters sold at Borders...

But you're right-the cores always exist. But there is my caveat above.

No, I don't think so. There's a difference between making money and selling out. Ever seen Foxworthy act like anything but a redneck? Ever seen him advertise for Mercedes? :D He wears blue stingray boots to his shows, for cripes sake. If that isn't redneck, I don't know what is.

And as for Clue Collar TV. Making a TV show that sucks doesn't mean your a sellout. It just means your show sucks. And man does that show suck. I laugh more at funerals.

What about trip hop and acid jazz? It will be a while before I see the Bristol sound adorning an insurance ad. Although...does a Honda ad count?

Doesn't he have his own jet? But I won't quibble...

My disallusionment happened early when I thought I belonged to a group that wouldn't sell out because no one wanted to buy. I was (well, I still am) a Slacker from way back where one of the elements was that we where dismissed, for the most part. We where a small generation raised by the biggest generation and no one was interested in making money off of us when there was so much of those self-indulgent bastards with more income above us, so we where left to our own devices. There where factions that where trying to sell out and couldn't.

But then we became probably the most sold out group ever. Sweet crap we where whored. When you can sell disinfranchised nothing is safe.

That sold out years ago. Back when I was working at the record store.

That was a good early indicator. The fact that all the game was was riding the bikes they'd made in the show instead of a bike builder game (I don't know how that would work, but it would be more about the show) was kinda weak. I never played it, maybe that was in there somewhere...

From what I saw in the commercials, it looks like a rip off of Road Rage.

Who thinks they have a sell-out proof scene? What will be next to sell themselves out?

Well, I had thought that firearms manufacturers were sell-out proof, but Bill Ruger proved that wrong. Colt and Smith & Wesson weren't much better.

While some manufacturers sold out gun owners, others did not. And there aren't too many gun owners who are going to sell the scene down the river.

In fact, our grass roots work has, over the past 10 years, raised the number of states with "shall issue" CCW permits from 12 to 35, with Wisconsin on the way. And we defeated the "assault weapons ban". And we lowered violent crime while radically increasing the number of firearms.

That said, I imagine that some Democrats, when they get elected (whether it's the mid-term elections or later), will happily sell us down the river, and pass legislation that turns every law-abiding gun owner into a felon with the stroke of a pen.

While not being even close to what I was talking about, the gun owner scene has been sold out for a while. In america that's probably the most exploited thing going.

The advance of cheap communications has made niche marketing realistic to such an extent that I think there's nothing that can't be sold out now. Ah, the power of the internet.

I'm not a fan of the band, but I kinda like the way that Chumbawumba went about trying to buy themselves back. They sold a song to Ford (I think) for $100,000 and then donated that to a watchdog group that critisized Ford. That was entertaining. I'm not into thier music but that amused me.

It certainly has nailed the coffin shut, hasn't it? You have to think that if photo reproduction and print set the Dadaists off, the internet would make thier heads explode.

The only people that are guaranteed not to sell out are the people that have nothing anyone is interested in buying.

Whole scenes sell out by their nature, if they have a driving logic or movement. If it can sell, it will. Corporations will exploit what they see as successful. It is individuals, bands, and small groups that keep scenes alive, even when the majority of a movement has sold-out to the allure of money, popularity, or sex.

Punk is dead, but there are still some truly punk bands.

The best music isn't found in "scenes". I don't bother with them, myself, and I find my music not being prone to selling out.
