I find this to be both sad and ironic. (while this is an old news piece I only came across it a few hours ago, talk about being out of the loop I know).

America, 2005: rising to the occasion, and meeting the needs of 1805.

While this may be one "progressive step" I hardly find South Africa's ridiculously high crime and unemployment to be particularly great.

It's kind of like claiming America is more democratic than Iran..

Gay rights are not the end all and be all on what is expected of a modern democracy with values pertaining to rule of law and avoidance of the tyranny of majority.

While the US is a dreadfully homophobic society, less progressive than South Africa on numerous other points they are not. Let's not get carried away - the US has a great deal of shame on itself for its record in this, but South Africa has much shame in others. Weigh those things in before you proclaim either to more or less anything.

How this happened is very simple...

While the rest of the world has embraced progressive agendas America has embraced social conservative agendas that have paralyzed Social/Scientific growth in America, allowing the rest of the world a chance to surpase America.

That is what happened.

Agreed. But using your logic, calling South Africa more progressive than America just because of one single aspect (while at the same neglecting the egregious economic and overall social standards), is equally a fallacy.

*clearly* untrue. when was the last time South Africa invaded a country on the other side of the globe? Oh thats right.,NEVER. Why? Because the US is better at projecting military power globally.

What's "better" about that? Your statement makes a number of assumptions.

However, when comparing specific aspects of various societies, the word is perfectlu usefull & accurate. Overall though, I wouldn't label SA as more progressive than the US.

Your right. The only nation on Earth I have been to and felt more in danger than in combat. S Africa I love the beauty but it is politically and socially a sketchy place.

Oh yes of course from a citizen whose nation probably won't exist in the long term. Splitting at the seams due to political correctness.
