The Who were and always will be far superior to Led Zeppelin. Hell, Keith Moon and John Entwhistle named Led Zeppelin. Robert Plant posed so heavily off Roger Daltrey in the late 60's-early 70's it's not funny. The only real personnel comparison you can even make is Jimmy Page vs Peter Townshend--the rest is so one sided it's not even funny.

And face it, the only reason Led Zeppelin is so popular nowadays is because ClearChannel loves them. Every goddamn time I turn on my car--Led Zeppelin. Every time I walk into a restaurant and the cooks have a radio on--Led Zeppelin. I can barely take a shit without "Black Dog" being piped in through my vent fan. Don't get me wrong--Led Zeppelin was a great group and did a whole bunch of really sweet songs, but damn if they aren't as hideously overplayed as "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" or whatever the latest piece of poppy swill is.

That said, "Misty Mountain Hop" is probably my favorite Led tune. They seem to leave that one out of the Led rotation for the most part, at least in my city.

Ah, the blessings of public art. Opinions vary.

Personally, I can't stand The Who. If I have to hear 'Baba O'Reilly', or 'Substitute', not to mention 'Boris the Spider' one more time, I think I'd puke on the spot.

Zeppelin still gets my heart beating faster every time.

That's why I do not listen to the radio.

My favorite song is Stairway to Heaven.

Stairway to Heaven, but a close second would be either Achilles Last Stand, or the Immigrant Song.

Out of curiousity, how exactly did you arrive at this point? Substitute and Boris the Spider don't exactly see that much public play, be it on the radio or in movies or commericals. Did you live with someone who had an unhealthy obsession with the Who or something?

And I've probably heard Baba O'Reily more than you have and I still love it :p

I personally never listen to the radio.

however, I have to say that my opinion of who is better: the who or led changes on almost a daily basis. It depends on what I'm looking for in my music.

Actually, yes. Some room-mates played The Who songs without break. Substitute and Boris the Spider just seem to have stuck themselves into my extreme dislike list.

I do admit, however, that Baba O'Reilly is a great song. Have just heard it too many times.

Note: I saw The Who live in Toronto many years ago, and Baba O'Reilly was THE song that rocked the gardens. I've never seen Townsend crazier...

Ah, alas I was born just a wee bit too late for that [Moon died 7 years before I was born], and I'm told that their live act was incredible. Given the footage I've seen of it, I tend to agree. Still, to have been there....

There are a lot of really good songs, but if I had to pick, I would probably go with When the Levee Breaks. More than any other, that's the song that you can hear their R&B roots in, although Immigrant Song has a wicked intro, and Stairway is of course the quintessential rock song.

Just as a note, though, the fact that Kieth Moon was in the Who does not give anyone liscence to talk smack about John Bonham. The man was a golden god on the drum set, and if you don't believe me, try listening to Moby Dick some time. In point of fact, between Bonham and Jones, Zep very likely had the best rhythym section ever assembled by a band.

That song is what made me want to learn to play drums.

Incidently, get Sirius radio. I got it because I could no longer stand hearing ClearChannel bleep out the "fuck" in "Who Are You?" ... well ... that and for Howard Stern.

Oh! And to stay on topic: Going to California.

The Water Song...I think someone referred to it earlier as the rain song....I could be wrong here, but I think that's the song they meant>"I felt the coldness of my winter.....I never thought....it would ever go...... I learned the song was about Robert Plants' child who drowned.
That and "Nobodys' Fault But Mine". John Paul Jones bass in that one is truly inspired.

That's the Rain Song - never heard it called the water song. That one is up there with my favorites but the tune that got me to start listening to Zep, and is still a fave, was Ramble On.

In point of fact, between Bonham and Jones, Zep very likely had the best rhythym section ever assembled by a band.
For every one Moby Dick solo [which, by the way, is often the only example John Bonham fans can cite in testament to his prowess], Moon had 12 "A Quick One" solos. The quality of Moon's work so grossly supercede's Bonham that it's not funny. The man had a lead foot, whereas Moon had 4 lightning fast appendages. Moon could strike drums faster than a machine gun could fire.

And no, the Who's rhythm section is far superior to Zeppelin's, on both counts [you can't really make a case for Bonham being better than Moon and yes, I've heard Moby Dick]. John Paul Jones was an excelent bassist [certainly top ten material]but John Entwhistle was the Jimi Hendrix of bass; his only real competition in that area is James Jamerson of Motown fame--you might have an argument there but certainly not with John Paul Jones.

By the way, if we're judging drumming talent based off single solos, you might want to give this kid (http://www.collegehumor.com/movies/1611013/) a listen.
