Guys and Eyeliner

The Helghan Empire
15-12-2005, 23:46
Is it so WRONG? Today, I wore eyeliner to school, for the first time, and everyone said that eyeliner is for girls. And made fun of me - I didn't give a fuck. I'm not gay though. I'm just Goth...don't bother me about thinkin' I'm gay. But is eyeliner for guys and girls or just girls?
(BTW, Gothic guys can wear it too right?) Just need some opinions before I might wear it again.

Why do you care if people think you're gay, any more than you would be bothered by people thinking you're goth?

Wear what you like. If you break the rules, well, that's something different; but otherwise, why worry about what other people will think?

It makes me giggle that women shout feminist slogans and then make themselves look pretty with eyeliner for men.

Sorry, eyeliner on men makes me think of rent-boys.

Eyeliner on guys looks hot. Tell me that Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean didn't make you drool.

Besides, when I was in highschool in the 80's all the goths and glam rockers wore eyeliner.

15-12-2005, 23:57
I'm a guy and I wear eyeliner. I wear it almost everyday. I've been doing so for more than year. I'm not gay, but I have been teased and ridculed for wearing my makeup, but most people around school have gotten used to me. Infact, many girls tend to like it on me!

I'm also "goth" (but I only refer to myself as "goth" for visual descriptive purposes). I think anyone, regardless of lifestyle or gender or sexuality can wear makeup should they choose too, don't let people get to you.

eye liner is girly and call me weird but i like men to look like menI think it can depend on how it's worn. The Helghan Empire said he was a goth - I think it looks quite cool on goth males. And as Equus said, some actors and musicians have looked really well in it.

Having said that, I think it might be a wee bit odd to see a bloke in a business suit or something wearing it, but then again, it's up to him :)

Which is why the best way to be a non-conformist is to go 19th century. After donning my top hat and monocle and grabbing my cane, I am completely unique among the population of New York. With the exception of Mr Peanut, whom I just realized I have spent the past two years impersonating . . .

I would like to encourage men to wear makeup.
If we're expected to look perfect and flawless and cover our faces up with enough paint to accomplish that then I don't see why the same shouldnt' be expected of men.

It's almost impossible to be a true non-conformist, studies seem to indicate that we primarily learn by imitation. Therefore, non-conformism is dangerously unnatural.

Well call me old fasioned, but I don't think eyeliner was meant for guys. Although if you want to explore your feminine side ok. (BTW about the goth discussion, goths aren't actually people being more individualistic, but morely a large group of people following the same fashion sense. I think of them sort of like the popular people, keeping up with what the new black is)

I was gonna wear a trenchcoat to school, but then realized that all the goths (I dislike anything goth) wear trenchcoats. So I decided to wear my British WWII greatcoat and uniform, to be truly nonconformist. Everyone thought that I was dressed as either a commie or a nazi. Made me sad for the state of education...

eyeliner on guys is hot. dont stop wearing it

the advice that used to be given to girls when makeup was considered a bit racy was "start out with a miminum"

if its just too much for your conservative class mates dont use so much. after a while they will be used to it and you can darken it up a bit more. pretty soon if you dont come into school looking like johnny depp they will think something is wrong with you.

I'd say it seems gay, and I was part of the not-so-overtly homosexual techno raving subculture at school. And heck, probably still am. (Mind you, the school in mentioned is CompSci uni, so I'm the only person in said subculture)

So there you go with the view from The Other Side ;P If you're goth, and feel woefully lacking self-expression, dress like Krusty the Klown for what I care, but yes, most people think the outfit looks ridiculous, a lot of those people will ridicule you for it, and you have to bear that. People won't stop thinking Goth looks funny just because it hurts your feelings.

Apathy on the subject of conformism v. nonconformism tends to make things considerably simpler. Just do what you feel like doing (aesthetically speaking). One day a few years ago I decided I wanted long hair, so I grew it out. I get an occasional playful jab, but nothing overtly hostile, as long as you're not going over the top (and if you're only doing what you actually want to be, you probably won't be) then you should be fine.

I have to say that greatcoats are rather awesome though.

It is an effeminate practice in our culture (Early 21st Century Greater Anglo-Europa-Japanese, AKA the West, the First World, G8 and Friends, ...). Of course, if enough people did it for long enough it might become part of the culture, but I would just as soon not see the culture change unless there is some positive value in it.

However, you're free to dress as you like within reason (I would not consider eyeliner unreasonable in this context), unless you're a minor and your parents or school have a rule against it. Just be prepared to accept the consequence of some people not liking it and letting you know it.

I get an occasional playful jab, but nothing overtly hostile, as long as you're not going over the top (and if you're only doing what you actually want to be, you probably won't be) then you should be fine.

I have to say that greatcoats are rather awesome though.

Yes, Greatcoats do kickass. Though the curious thing is, ever since I got the German Policeman's coat, everyone's been making the strangest connections between Nazism and my Swiss military coat, which doesn't even have the red patch, german lettering, or anything distinctive about it except for "+" sign crosses on the buttons. Very strange, especially when considering how people are usually loathe to get near me.

I agree totally. If men want to wear eyeliner, well, thats fine. I don't understand why they would, but to me, dating a guy who will probably want to borrow my eyeliner, and who knows what else.. just doesn't sit right with me.

Meh, Girls are the ones who usually wear it and they usually look like stupid raccoons.

Put the stupid raccoon rings on a boy's face and you look even sillier.

ah, but many a boy looks like a stupid racoon without eyeliner.
maybe eyeliner could help, there?

Depends whether you can pull it off without looking stupid. It doesn't look good on me, but I chose both.

You know that girls don't naturally come with eyeliner any more than men do, right?

I would like to encourage men to wear makeup.
If we're expected to look perfect and flawless and cover our faces up with enough paint to accomplish that then I don't see why the same shouldnt' be expected of men.

Although it would also work if people would stop expecting women to wear makeup...
I assume you boycott makeup then? Nobody actually forces you to wear it.

I believe I have my picture in the Player Info thread... in eyeliner...

Nobody told me it was 'girly'...

I like guys in eyeliner. But then again I like pretty boys. I also like genderfucking... So yeah, not too much of a surprise.

My boyfriend looks cute in eyeliner. And for some reason he really likes wearing his hair in pigtails...

If you look like one of the Easterlings from LOTR then it's pretty badass, but the armor and weapons probably contribute to that.

IMHO, anyone who wants to wear it can wear it, but I have personal tastes that force me to judge how well it is applied.

For instance, if a man or woman puts so much eye makeup on that they look like a slit-eyed raccoon, then it's just wrong. But, everyone has their own tastes in fashion, so go out there and paint yourself up!

Besides, isn't being Goth all about making some kind of statement? You should be proud of your makeup.

It's not about how 'gay' or how 'goth' dudes are. It just depends on the dude wearing it, and how well said dude can apply it. That goes for dudettes, too. Like wearing a midriff-showing shirt. Don't do it if your gut hangs out over your pants. Therefore, if you look good in eyeliner/know how to put it on right, go for it, if not, then please have a little courtesy! No one likes banana-theivin' 'coons. I'm a dudette, and I don't like to wear eyeliner because it makes my 'computer tan' even more obvious. (:

i don't expect women to wear makeup. in fact, i find women who wear more than just a little makeup to be unattractive. it even bugs me when my gf put's on extra makeup for some occasion, although eyeliner and maybe some lipstick/gloss is nice.

Men wore makeup before women did I thought. Just tell those homophobes that and tell them that they are girlish for not wearing makeup as it is a manly affair.

Then ask them what it would matter to them if you were gay or not... ask if they are interested in you or something and say that you aren't available.

I'm seriously missing a "Neither" option here!
Generally, it already looks really awful on girls, and on guys it's just way past gross!
So if you're going down that route, be sure to buy yourself a red lipstick and a pink tutu to go with the eyeliner! Don't do things by halves! :D

It's really glaringly obvious that men who wear eyeliner are desperate for some type of attention, and besides that it's disgusting on men

EDIT: It's pretty bad on women too, but at least society expects them to

*giggle* I agree... although I was thinking more along the lines of some ears and a tail, to go with the raccoon eyes.

If I wear makeup, my goal is to make nobody realise I'm wearing it. I think most women look like they took a makeup gun (a la Homer Simpson) and squirted their face on in the morning. Gaudy, overdone, and just generally garish and ugly. Specially the eyes.

What is a Cross dresser?

An individual, usually heterosexual, who desires and needs to dress in the clothing of the opposite sex at different times throughout his or her life. This compulsive behavior generally starts young and the individual struggles alone for many years with this closeted need. Cross dressing is not a sickness, but represents a person who enjoys expressing another aspect of his personality and gains both emotional and physical pleasure from this transition. It is not a hobby, but a necessity and Cross dressing is for life. Cross-dressing is a compulsion, but we must not see it as a sickness. A good wife should tolerate it because the man has no choice, but it isn't too hard to tolerate because it's a gift. It is about fun and pleasure-and it's a necessity. The necessity of cross-dressing is frightening to the men and to their wives, and their wish to tame it, to characterize it as a preference and a gift, is understandable.

I wish he'd do it more, actually. I just went to see him in NY and he was wearing jeans and a boring shirt. He's much more color-coordinated in a dress.
