Well? last weekend I bought a bottle of Glenfiddich 30 year old Scotch. It cost me almost $230 for one bottle, and it's probably the most exotic alcohol there is to buy in this small town. So, let's hear it - what was the best alcohol you've ever had, and why?

Yeah, I pretty much just bought it because of the age, and 'cause I wanted to try it - I wouldn't buy it often, despite how good it was.

The drink I like the most that I drink on a regular basis is Strongbow, an English cider. I also love lager (esp. Tennant's, a scottish beer), Guinness and as for wine pretty much any Australian or Chilean Savignon Blanc. Calypso coffee is fantastic as well.
As for the absolute best, well, I wouldn't be entirely sure, but I had the pleasure of travelling to Ontario a couple of months ago, and was able to visit a local vineyard while there. I liked one wine so much, I brought home two bottles of it - and would have brought a lot more if customs rules allowed it. I'm really pissed off that I can't get it here
I'm not a big spirit drinker, but I agree that Captain Spice is rather nice. I also like mulled wine, which is one of the few advantages of Christmas for me!

Rum

Banana (think it was a wedge of 1/4 of a banana)

Shot, I don't remember what it was called, I was pretty drunk at the time, but I had it this past weekend at a bar called "The Loaded Hog"
Mixed drink, Dry Bombay Saphire Martini with an olive. Sometimes with a pickled tabasco pepper if I want something spicy.

Thats the bottle for the really special occasions. My brother's wedding, ny best friend's wedding, my daughter's christening. And only for people that enjoy it. Not people that take a glass and then grimace and put it down.
I'm not wasting an ounce like that- they can have the Red Label for that

Its decent, but I would have liked to have gotten it for $50.00. the bottle is even smaller than the standard bottle. They try to impress you with the silk lined box and the fancy little medallion around the neck.
That wont happen to me again.
Balvenie is well worth the price. And it goes great with a La Gloria Cubana Wavell.

You could have saved yourself a considerable amount of money by purchasing a bottle of 1977 Ardbeg, which is not only a much better single malt, but costs less too. It's c.70GBP a bottle. The 17 year old is pretty damn fantastic too, at c.50GBP a bottle.
Alas, as I understand it, if you can't find Ardbeg in your local alcohol outlet, the distillery can't ship to Canada. But if you ever find any, do please buy some. You'll wonder why you ever wasted your hard-earned cash on mere Glenfiddich.

I agree with you on the Ardbeg, but he may not like Islay scotch like you and I obviously do. Some people like less peat. I would go with the Macallan 12 yr for someone who prefers a Speyside scotch.
Well, It's not particularly expensive, but I enjoy B&B or just strait Benedictine. I enjoy how smooth it feels as it goes down, plus drinking out of a brandy snifter in general makes me feel really suave.

Fair point, but he won't know unless he tries, will he?
On the other hand, people are understandably reluctant to spend a large sum of money on something they might not like. So perhaps the best advice would be for him to try a 10 year old Ardbeg - which is both less expensive and a lot easier to find. If he doesn't like that, I'm sure there are a lot of people in Alberta who'll gladly drink it for him ;)

Depends upon my mood. I probably would drink more bollinger if anyone I knew really liked it (there's always something vaguely depressing about drinking champagne on your own) but normally I drink either Gavi di Gavi la scolca or Cloudy Bay.
When I am in the mood for harder liquor its normally JW black, or Glenmorangie if available. My personal fav scotch is Royal Lochnagar however.
I don't drink much red wine these days, and I hardly ever touch beer.
A good vintage port and a spoonful of ripe stilton is the only way to end a meal. The old homestead has a decent selection of the former.

The Japanese have a wonderful way of serving sake known as "wakame-zake". It would generally be my favorite, especially if it's a good jizake like koshinokampai and most especially if a nice drinking vessel is used (I prefer mine without much "wakame", if any.)
This is a "naughty" tradition in Japan akin to "nyotaimori" (so called "naked sushi", usually practiced between lovers. It's especially popular at New Years. Wakame is kelp (seaweed).

In a 2 liter glass boot, combine:
1 liter Crystallweissen (sp?) beer... Julius Echter Hofbrau (Wuerzburg, Germany) preferred.
1 liter apple juice
2-4 shots (to taste) Blue Curacao
Makes a green beer. Even people who didn't like alcohol would drink this... with the Julius Echter beer, it doesn't taste like alcohol, nor have an alcoholic aftertaste.
Rules for drinking:
Gather a few friends... each should have their own drink (beer, whatever) as well, as this is only 2 liters
Once the boot is picked up, it doesn't get set down until it's empty.
The boot is passed around, and everyone playing decides in the first round if they're playing or not.
Everyone playing takes a single drink, then passes the boot to the next person. Size of drink doesn't matter... a sip or a gulp, though it is considered very rude to drink so much that it doesn't get around the table even once.
The "toe" of the boot should be pointing away from the drinker.
Once the amount of beer has dropped so the "boot" becomes a "shoe", the next person must finish the boot.

The best alchol I was given was some Maraschino brandy from Zadar, it was left by a guest in our home, and my mom knew that our step dad was working up to totally disallow booze in the house so she gave it to me to finish as needed. I used to get awful sore throats and I'd smuggle it to speech tournaments in a cherry Nyquil bottle. No one was the wiser! haha. One night in Arcata I'd just bought my first two records that I bought with my own money, and one was Donovan, the other was Makedonian bagpipe music, I put on the Makedonian bagpipes and had me a full Nyquil cup of that Maraskino mmmmmm! gave an excellent speech the next day too! My step-dad was never the wiser that this precious nectar of the Gods was rescued from his fanatical insistance that there be no more booze of any sort in our home!
The second best alchol I was given was a bottle of 25 year old Jamisons aged in oak, it was given to me by a former boss, for a particularly productive year, I had trained a really cracker-jack phone room for them and we were cranking out some really solid sideing and windows leads for him, so he was well pleased with the job I did.
Another really nice thing I had was some mead brandy from Germany, it came in a really cute bottle that had a little bear made of yellow reflector stuff and it was excellent, I kind of reserved it for times when someone had a bad sore throat, it was much better than cough syrup. Tasted delicious too. Irish Mist isn't bad either. Same goes for Drambui, which I suspect is a mead brandy. The recipe is secret.
I wish I could get some Maraskino rakija in this God forsaken gulag! Must alert my network of minions to smuggle some in for me!

Alcoholic eggnog, eh? hmmm.... excellent idea. What are you supposed to mix with eggnog? rum?
Spiced rum is the best thing, there is the infamous delicious George Washington recipe which has several kinds of alchol, but would be prohitively expensive on the scale people entertain now adays, still it has a lot of good stuff, rum, whiskey, sherry, brandy, He would make it a day or two ahead of the festivities, and it would be kept in a cool place, in those days a wide windowsill would have done, this was so the flavors would blend well. These days I suppose one could get those little bitty bottles and use a carton of extra rich gourmet eggnog. I have wanted to make a batch of the George Washinton recipe from scratch, but there are some people who've gotten involved with the family who can't hold their liquor so it's probably not going to happen :( not in all it's decadent 18th century glory, sramota!

Wine: Something called Maiden's Blush made in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Love it. For a more normal wine, Riunete Lambrusco (spelling?) is my wine of choice. I don't like dry wines - or too sweet wines, either.
Chick drink: Chocolate Covered Grasshopper. I've only ever seen it offered once, and man, it was great. It's a grasshopper, but with chocolate liquor in it, and chocolate syrup, and I dunno what all.
Wine Cooler: Winter Berry. Except I can't find it anymore.

I have to say my favorite is a kamikaze, but I also like fuzzy navels. When I was younger I loved to drink the alcohol with flecks of gold in it that was stashed in my parents' booze cabinet. Wait a minute...alcohol tastes...good? Does...not...compute...
I can't even tolerate when Italian restaurants cook with wine, cook the alcohol out, and leave the flavoring in their food. I can't even stand Communion wine. And beer's no better. And don't go telling me that alcohol is an "acquired taste" the way my parents tell me it is. Either you like something or you don't, and enjoying the taste of wine either comes to a person or happens after years of killing one's taste buds. I'll stick to Coke, thanks.

Getting a head start on killing those taste buds, are you? I'll tell you a quick anecdote. I have a friend who has been independently wealthy his entire life. He never really had any reason to do anything, or even eat or drink anything he didn't like. There is nothing as maddening as trying to accomodate my friend. If we have lunch or dinner together, it's Swiss Chalet or Mr. Sub. If we go see a movie and want to chat over a coffee afterwards, he'll sneak a can of coke from the convenience store onto the patio of the coffee shop.
Having a jeuvenile palate is not considered a selling point with friends, family, or romantic partners. It's actually annoying as hell. Better kickstart the process of cultivating tastes. Worry about refining them later.
Coke is for children.

I'm a beer man myself and as far as what's easily accessible in Aus, nothing beats a Tooheys Old.
Something certainly interesting though was a little concoction we came up with a few weeks ago.
You take a drink mixer, place ice inside, then lime cordial, then vodka, then scotch, then tequilla and some salt. You can water it down if you wish.
At this point the drink looks real messed up as the alcohols don't really mix straight away so you shake it up good and pour it out. The drink is strong but actually goes down quite smooth.
We called it Killer as it seemed an appropriate name for something with the above ingredients. Also, not a drink to be skulled as dire consequences will be experienced.

Nah, Cascade all the way, especially those special ones they do every so often
And Not skulling such a concotion is un-Australian :)

I will put them on my list of vodkas to try. Currently on the list are Skyy and Grey Goose.
It's only once in a great while that I actually drink alcohol anymore.

I don't drink to get drunk anymore. My favorite drinks now are sangria that i make, tastes great and gets people ripped beyond belief. I keep away from my own sangria. I don't trust myself on it. Just drinking for pleasure, sake. I just tried it and i love it.
Indeed, like VB *shudders*
VB is okay....cold. Drinking it warm is like some type of medieval torture. I remember a couple of weeks ago I woke up to discover a VD...uh, VB still in my hand. Yeah. Um. For some reason I decided I should finish it off. Eurgh. :/
Fourex is worse though. And West End from South Australia is shithouse. Though I can stomach both if cold. (Let's not mention Fosters.)
When I go to Liquorland in Altona it's usually $25-30 for 700ml Beam and about $40-45 for 700ml Wild Turkey
Yeah, my bad. I was thinking of JD.

Ahahaha. Paint me green and gold then. :D

Well? last weekend I bought a bottle of Glenfiddich 30 year old Scotch. It cost me almost $230 for one bottle, and it's probably the most exotic alcohol there is to buy in this small town. So, let's hear it - what was the best alcohol you've ever had, and why?
mmmmGlenfiddich. It was the first scotch I had ever had, that made me a scotch lover.

I've got a bottle of Glendronach 15 year old here which is definitely some of the best whiskey I ever had. It has an unusual flavour, as the whiskey is stored in old sherry casks, giving it a very fruity, cherry aroma.
Glenfiddich is brilliant as well, and so is Jameson and Powers 12 year old.

Cascade is alright but I get sick of the flavour pretty quickly. I guess it's because it's the first beer I started drinking and I had a lot of it.
Not skulling such a concoction keeps you alive. I saw the affects of skulling it, the heart suffers as well as other organs.
