Alright! I finally applied to some festivals!

*does a happy dance* Before I do the verbal happy dance, I'll just say that I am NOTORIOUS for letting deadlines pass me by, and I've missed out on some great opportunities just because I never got my sh*t together early enough. Well, this time I actually got things in on time, and W00T!

I'm applying to play at two summer folk festivals in Alberta (the South and North Country Fairs). It's not really a big deal, I'd be on a tiny little obscure stage, but that's fine. I'm not an ego tripper...I just want to PLAY! I'm particularly excited because I started attending the North Country Fair with my parents the first year it began...when I was still a baby. The fair is almost as old as I am, and I'm wild about singing there. There are, of course, no guarantees...I might not get to play, but at least I got the frickin' application in!

This also means I need to finally record a legit CD, which is going to involve a lot of hunting around for the rights to these 'obscure Spanish songs'. But at least it's SOMETHING to do...I mean...I'm on NS for 8 hours a day while at 'work' for a reason...

Now I'm just cranky because I haven't gotten off my ass and gotten some of my stuff in festivals recently. I used to have a mechanism that did it for me. Now I have to do it myself, and I suffer from the same malidy you do. I keep waiting for someone to come to my door and ask, "Say, do you have any interesting plays or movies you'd like done?"

congrats! if you make that CD, I suggest putting it on CDbaby.com so us NSers can easily get a copy.

hmm...what am I excited for?
Last finals tomorrow, so I get to go home for vacation and have a month without work.
I also get to see my mom graduate tomorrow night from massage therapy school.

And I'm going on a cruise from the 24-31.

overall, a good few weeks coming up.

What...you don't think some small town Albertan singing Latin American folk songs is going to experience overnight international fame after two days of playing on an obscure east stage at an obscure music festival?

No worries...I'll personally ensure that NSers can pirate my CD to their heart's desire! I certainly don't plan on making any coin off it!

No-I have certainly wished you well in something where it was clear you were putting effort and it was important to you. One several occaisions. The last that comes to mind was your consideration of going to law school.

I'm happy for you and will offer and supportive words or advice I can.

Congratulations on getting over that deadline hump!! I have the exact same problem myself. Applications are such a chore. At least you're not a visual artist -- we have to write dumbass "statements" in academic art-gibberish to go with our applications. Good luck. Have fun. Knock 'em dead.

I'm kind of excited about a project I can't procrastinate on because it's a collaboration with someone a lot more organized than me. It's still in the first planning stages, but if it works, it will be a series of collaborative art improvisations. There will probably be an online game associated with it in some form. There's grant talk, book talk, even film talk. This could keep us off the streets for a couple of years. No money, though, but what the hell -- I'm a surrealist. I gave up on money ages ago.

Now I can't decide if I should use my real name, or have some sort of cool 'stage' name. Of course, I'm enamored of the name I use here...but I know everyone will mangle it and pronounce it as though I were a hue of sin. And the same goes for any Cree names I come up with...and I'm sorry, I'm just not going to adopt a Spanish name. Ideas, folks? Real name, or stage name? If it's the later, suggest some puleez...and make them family rated!

years ago, when I was a supervisor taht fielded complaint calls, someone demanded my name for a complaint letter.
I told them "Phuc Yu". After their shock and outrage, I told them I was Korean and got a lot of flack for my name.

Try that one. its fine with me.

Maybe you could use a Cree name, but spell it such that its easier to get the right pronuciation, like "Sin'uway". It looks kinda funny, but the word isn't inherently hard to pronounce -it's just the spelling. I must have missed this sample of your music...where did you post it?

Alright, in the interest of introducing this music to people, I'll post a link so you can listen to it, do what you want with it, and read the lyrics (in Spanish, and English) if you want to know what the song is about. I also apologise for the English translation, if it seems a bit off...feel free to help me out.

This first one is Violeta Ausente (http://rapidshare.de/files/9462216/01_Track_1.wma.html)...by Violeta Para.

1: Violeta Ausente

Por qué me vine de Chile
tan bien que yo estaba allá
ahora ando en tierras extrañas
¡ay! cantando pero apená

Tengo en mi pecho una espina
que me clava sin cesar
es mi corazón que sufre
¡ay!, por su tierra chilena

CORO:
Quiero bailar cueca
quiero tomar chicha
quiero ir al mercado
y comprarme un pequén
ir a Matucana

Antes de salir de Chile
yo no supe comprender
lo que vale ser chileno
¡ay!, ahora si que lo sé

Igual que lloran mis ojos
al cantar esta canción
así llora mi guitarra
¡ay!, penosamente el bordón

CORO
Que léjos está mi Chile
lejos mi media mitad
qué lejos mis ocho hermanos (I made a mistake here and said 'ochos'. !lo siento!)
¡ay!, mi comaire y mi mamá

Parece que hiciera un siglo
que de Chile no sé ná
por eso escribo esta carta
la mando de aquí pa' allá

VIOLETA ABSENT

Why did I leave Chile?
It was so good that I was there,
Now I go out into strange lands,
Oh! Singing, but full of sorrow.

In my breast there is a thorn,
That drives into me without ceasing,
It's my heart that suffers,
Oh! For your Chilean lands.

I want to dance the Cueca*,
I want to drink Chicha*,
Go to the market
And buy myself a little thing.
Go to Matucana*,
And go down Quinta*,
To Santa Lucia*, with you my good one.

Before leaving Chile,
I did not understand
What it's worth to be Chilean,
Oh! Now I know it!

Just as my eyes cry,
To sing this song,
In this way cries my guitar,
Oh! Burdensome is this pilgrim's staff.

How far away is my Chile,
Far away my other half,
How far are my eight siblings,
Oh! My children's godmother and my mother.

It seems as though it's been a century
Since I've heard anything from Chile,
For this reason I'm writing this letter,
To send from here to there.

*cueca - traditional dance, chicha - grape cider, Matucana, Quinta and Santa Lucia are all areas in the capital of Chile, Santiago.

La Carta (http://rapidshare.de/files/9462361/06_Track_6.wma.html)
Violeta Parra

Me mandaron una carta
Por el correo temprano
En esta carta me dicen
Que cayó preso mi hermano
Y sin lástima, con grillos
Por las calles lo arrastraron
Sí!

La carta dice el motivo
Que ha cometido Roberto:
Haber apoyado el paro
Que ya se había resuelto.
Si acaso esto es un motivo
Preso voy también, sargento
Sí!

Yo que encuentro tan lejos
Esperando una noticia,
Me viene a decir la carta
Que en mi patria no hay justicia:
Los hambrientos piden pan,
Plomo les da la “justicia”
Sí!

Habrase visto insolencia,
Barbarie y alevosía
De presentar el trabuco
Y matar a sangre fría
A quien defensa no tiene,
Con las dos manos vacías
Sí!

La carta que me mandaron
Me pide contestación,
Yo pido que se propale
Por toda la población
Que el león es un sanguinario
En toda generación
Sí!

Por suerte tengo guitarra
También tengo mi voz
También tengo nueve hermanos
Fuera del que se engrilló.
Los nueve revolucionarios
Con el favor de mi dios.
Sí!

THE LETTER

They sent me a letter
In the early mail,
In this letter they told me
My brother had fallen prisoner,
And without pity, in shackles,
Through the streets they dragged him,
Yes.

The letter said the motive,
The crime Roberto had committed,
Was to support a strike,
That was being broken up,
If this is reason enough,
I'll be a prisoner too sergeant!
Yes.

It found me from so far away,
Waiting for news,
The letter came to tell me
That in my country there is no justice,
The hungry ask for bread,
Lead is what 'justice' gives them.
Yes.

I have seen insolence,
Barbarity and treachery,
To point the gun
And kill in cold blood,
Those who have no defense
With two empty hands,
Yes!

The letter they sent me,
Requests an answer of me,
I ask that they spread the news
To everyone
That the Lion* is bloodthirsty
In every generation,
Yes!

By luck I have a guitar,
And also my voice,
And I have nine brothers
Unshackled,
May all nine be revolutionaries
With the grace of God,
Yes!

*the Lion was a politician, actually a family of politicians that held power in more than one generation.

Corazón Maldito (http://rapidshare.de/files/9462674/04_Track_4.wma.html)
by Violeta Parra

Corazón, contesta,
¿Por qué palpitas, sí,
Por qué palpitas?
Como una campana
Que se encabrita, sí,
Que se encabrita.
¿Por qué palpitas?

¿No ves que la noche
La paso en vela, sí,
La paso en vela?
Como en mar violento
La carabela, sí, la carabela.
Tú me desvelas.

¿Cuál es mi pecado?
Pa'maltratarme, sí, pa'maltratarme.
Como el prisionero
Por los gendarmes, sí,
Por los gendarmes.
Quieres matarme.

Pero a ti te ocultan
Duras paredes, sí,
Duras paredes.
Y mi sangre oprimes
Entre tus redes, sí,
Entre tus redes.
¿Por qué no cedes?

Corazón maldito
Sin miramiento, sí,
Sin miramiento.
Ciego, sordo y mudo
De nacimiento, sí,
De nacimiento
Me das tormento.
Sin miramiento
Me das tormento.

Cruel Heart
Answer me, heart...
why do you beat like this,
why do you beat?
like a bell being rung,
like a bell being rung
why do you beat?

Don't you see I pass the night,
sleepless in candle light?
like one in a roiling see,
upon a caravel ship,
you keep me sleepless

What sin have I committed
that you mistreat me so?
like a prisoner
like a prisoner
in the hands of the police
You want to kill me

But my sins are hidden,
hard walls,
hard walls.
And my blood is pressed within your chambers
why don't you cease?

Cruel heart,
without vision,
without vision,
blind, deaf and mute
from birth, from birth
You torment me.

Maldición de Malinche (http://rapidshare.de/files/9463296/05_Track_5.wma.html)
I first heard this sung by Amparo Ochoa...though it was written by Gabino Palomares.

Del mar los vieron llegar
mis hermanos emplumados,
eran los hombres barbados
de la profecia esperada.

Se oyó la voz del monarca
de que el dios había llegado
y les abrimos la puerta
por temor a lo ignorado.

Iban montados en bestias
como demonios del mal
iban con fuego en las manos
y cubiertos de metal.

Solo el valor de unos cuantos
les opuso resistencia
y al mirar correr la sangre
se llenaron de verguenza.

Porque los dioses no comen
ni gozan con lo robado
y cuando nos dimos cuenta
ya todo estaba acabado.

En ese error entregamos
la grandeza del pasado
y en ese error nos quedamos
300 años esclavos.

Se nos quedó el maleficio
de brindar al extranjero
nuestra fe, nuestra cultura
nuestro pan, nuestro dinero.

Hoy le seguimos cambiando
oro por cuentas de vidrios
y damos nuestra riqueza
por sus espejos con brillo.

Hoy en pleno siglo XX
nos siguen llegando rubios
y les abrimos la casa
y los llamamos amigos.

Pero si llega cansado
un indio de andar la sierra
lo humillamos y lo vemos
como extraño por su tierra.

Tú, hipócrita, que te muestras
humilde ante el extranjero
pero te vuelves soberbio
con tus hermanos del pueblo.

¡oh! Maldición de Malinche
Enfermedad del presente
¿Cuándo dejarás mi tierra?
¿Cuándo harás libre a mi gente?

--------------------------------
Curse of the Malinche*

From the sea they saw them arrive
my feathered brothers and sisters
they were the bearded men
of the awaited prophecy.

The voice of the monarch was heard
saying that the god had arrived
and we opened the door to them
out of fear of the unknown.

They were mounted on beasts
like demons of evil
they carried fire in their hands
and they were covered with metal.

Only the valor of a few
put up any resistance to them
and when they saw the blood running
they were filled with shame.

Because gods don't eat,
nor do they enjoy what they've stolen
and by the time we realized it,
everything was over.

In that mistake we gave up
the greatness of the past
and in that mistake we became
slaves for 300 years.

The curse remained with us
of offering the stranger
our faith, our culture,
our bread, our money.

Today we continue exchanging with them
gold for glass beads
and we give up our wealth
for shiny mirrors.

Today, in the middle of the 20th century
blond people keep coming to us
and we open our homes to them
and we call them friends.

But if there arrives an indian,
tired of walking the mountains
we humiliate him and we see him
as a stranger in his own country.

You, hypocrite, you who appear
humble before the stranger
but become arrogant
with your peasant brothers.

Oh, Malinche's curse,
sickness of the present,
when will you leave my land?
When will you make my people free?

*La Malinche was the native woman who became Cortez' guide (and reputed also to be his lover), and acted as a translator. Some say she prevented even more massacres, but others resent her as a traitor to her people.

Okay... That'd go just fine with my mood ;) I'd just hoped for something more happy cheery - something that would make me go happy dance :( Spanish happy dance music is hard to do sola. Cumbias, merengues...even cuecas and tonadas are better played with a group...percussion is really key. I would love, love, LOVE to play more of that kind of music, but getting a knowledgeable or just plain able group together to do that has been impossible so far. I'm hoping if I get to play these festivals, I'll meet some like-minded people and get to be more rowdy/happy.

Spanish happy dance music is hard to do sola.
Yeah, I know. Just thought that your playlist so far was a little on the down-side of happiness.

Good luck on your festival business, though! Thanks...I'll keep what you've said in mind...I have been searching for upbeat tunes, and I have enough I think to prevent my listeners from comitting suicide as I play one tear-jerker after another:) Once I have some recorded, I promise to share them with you! And I've decided against bothering with copyright. I'll just go copyleft. Let everyone have access...I figure...if someone is willing to listen to me yowl, they shouldn't have to PAY for it:) And if someone wants to track me down and sue me for singing without paying royalties, BRING IT ON! a) that first part, cree i suppose: is it always that slow or are you just making it such in order for us to savour it for longer?

b) mas o menos, sí. mejor que la mayoría lo dice :) [and yes, the day will come where i learn how to record voice messages and then the big mystery will be unveiled]

c) you do that "switching voice when switching languages" thing to an extreme, no? sexy. i'm not quite decided which one i like best. spanish's got a plus point for being spanish (duh), and it sounds more playful in a harmless way, but the english sounds more..playful in a non-pg-rated way, so..ye.

d) i don't? [p.s. the audio part is the least of my worry. i have more of a hassle with the mental images popping up]

wow, input overflow.

a) that first part, cree i suppose: is it always that slow or are you just making it such in order for us to savour it for longer? Cree is like that. It's sort of because there are all these letters in there we just drop...and insert pauses instead. Like Tans'i...it's actually taninsi, but we pause instead of just saying it. If you talk to native people, you'll often find that their accent is directly related to how their language sounds...people say that natives talk 'slow' when speaking English. It's because our words are long and complicated, and we need to enunciate, or risk leaving out important parts.

c) you do that "switching voice when switching languages" thing to an extreme, no? sexy. i'm not quite decided which one i like best. spanish's got a plus point for being spanish (duh), and it sounds more playful in a harmless way, but the english sounds more..playful in a non-pg-rated way, so..ye. Hehehee...I can't help it. I have a thing with accents. I 'echo' a lot when talking with people who have a different accent than mine...I'll start sounding Australian, or French Canadian...you should hear me speaking to my in-laws...lots of Spanglish and bad syntax because that's how they speak. But you kind of have to switch voices...the sounds in each language are quite different. Cree is very monotone compared to Spanish and English...if you start inserting Spanish or English pitch variations, it is hard to understand.

Hehehehhee...I CAN do a very good Spanish-as-a-first-language-speaking- English accent...like I said, I tend to do it around my in-laws or other native Spanish speakers. My coworkers bug me that they can tell when I'm talking to a native speaker of Spanish on the phone, because I immediately get an 'accent'. I don't mean to, really!

I had promised to post a real picture when I left NS for good...but when I 'left' I sort of suspected it wouldn't be 'for good'...and I chickened out at the last minute. I kind of intended someone to call me on the picture I posted...but I think I overestimated even Canadian's familiarity with natives...my friend is a full-blood Gwich'in...and she could be the poster girl for Gwich'in people with her specific looks. I've said many times that my Irish heritage has bleached me out...I am nowhere near that dark. But in any case, the point is, I've only shared my real picture with a few posters so far. That will change as if I share more music as I record it...I wouldn't want you bumping into my friend and going "Sinuhue! Hey, I really liked this one song, but it was a bit depressing..." and her reaching for something to bludgeon you with before running away:)
