We've has threads for posting photos of ourselves and even of our desktops, but I'm not sure I've seen one for posting pics of our towns/areas. There's people here from all over the world, and I'd be interested in seeing what those parts of the world look like.

Here are some pictures of landmarks in my hometown of Belfast to start:

The City Hall (http://www.guide-to-nireland.com/cityhall.jpeg)
Queen's University, Belfast (http://titus.phy.qub.ac.uk/group/Jorge/AMA203/title.jpg)
Albert Clock (http://www.ballynagarrick.net/places/belfast2.jpg)
The Odyssey Arena and Pavillion (http://www.paddi.net/images/abercorn.jpg) (Centre with bars/clubs/restaurants, plus a giant concert and sports venue)
Waterfront Hall (http://www.paddi.net/images/waterfront.jpg) (concert, conference and theatrical venue)
The Grand Opera House (http://www.irish-architecture.com/buildings_ireland/antrim/belfast/images/operahouse_lge.jpg)
The Europa Hotel (http://www.infc.ulst.ac.uk/informatics/events/soft-ware/europa.jpg) (the most bombed hotel in Europe for at least a time!)
Aerial view of the centre of Belfast (http://www.propertysnaps.co.uk/images/belfastcentreaerial.jpg)

OK, that's more than enough from this part of the world. I'd love to see where you all live.

I thought it would be funny to show pictures of the scummy side of my city, but I couldn't find any online. Foiled again.

So here's the best (worst) thing I could find. The Yarra river. The only river in the world to float upside down. (note the colour)

Wow those are beautiful pictures. I feel silly 'bout my town now. But I'll play along anyway...

This is down the street from me. (http://www.daytripping.com/hiway9/coveredbridgebig.jpg)
This road (http://www.daytripping.com/hiway9/fogbankbig.jpg)
I didn't actually know that this was here. (http://www.centralcoasttourist.com/Santa_Cruz_County/Santa_Cruz_Cities/Ben_Lomond/photos/pages/BenLomondCastle.jpg) Huh, gonna have to go looking for it.
Motorcyclists come here like it was their Mecca (http://canyonchasers.net/albums/california/9_k_hwy35.jpg) On weekends every hour or so a pack of hornets go by. Some great classic cars, too.
Stuff like this is everywhere here. (http://www.peninsulacameraclub.com/Winners/2005-01/PA%202%20Rork%20and%20Wave-Santa%20Cruz--Jenny%20%20Gu.JPG)
The Boardwalk (http://astro.nmsu.edu/~aklypin/World/SantaCruz/SANTA-CRUZ-23.JPG) Some know it as the set of The Lost Boys
That statue is of a street performer (http://astro.nmsu.edu/~aklypin/World/SantaCruz/SANTA-CRUZ-19.JPG) Which considering how they've been treating them lately, is sort of mocking.
The Bigfoot Discovery Museum (http://www.ocregister.com/newsimages/travel/2005/09/090405bigfoot.jpg) which is also down the street from me. According to that dude, this is prime bigfoot territory.
His name is Robert (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/c/c6/Pacific_santacruz_ca.jpg).

my old school (http://www.kingedwards.org.uk/util/image.jsp?i=296&f=blob3&c=10) (founded in 1553, relocated after the war) (excuse the awful pic its the best i can find off the school website:headbang: )

west quay shopping centre (http://www.capitasymonds.co.uk/uploaded_files/images/61_205_Web_West2.jpg) (largest mall in the south of britain)

where i used to live (winchester) (http://www.gregoryferdinandsen.com/LGW2004/LGW2004_Images/Winchester%20Cathedral%20(Exterior,%20Side)%20(2).jpg) (not in that building sadly - that's the cathedral. i used to live in an old victorian school :))

lots of old shit round here - plenty of history. southampton has been one of (often the) busiest ports in britain since it was founded (as a port) by the romans (it was a settlement since bronze age sort of thing). winchester, where i used to live, about 20 miles down the road, was the ancient capital of the country (originally Wessex), and they still crowned monarchs there till a short while back i understand. plus, they have the legendary 'round table' hanging in the hall there :)
southampton was a major site of spitfire manafacture in ww2, and as such it got bombed to hell. over 50,000 civilian lives were lost apparently (why we have so many damn cenotaphs round the place) but the city's grown up again to over 300,000 people. its the largest city on the south coast of the uk (and totally pwns portsmouth!), and i think its actually the largest city south of london. woot! :)

sorry got kinda carried away there, heh

Hooray Guinness! :D

No no ... I mean Ireland. It's where my mother's family is from. Well, they're more from Omagh, but I'd rather be in a larger city.Good man :) Omagh's a nice town, but I agree - better to be in a larger town. A lot of Tyrone is pretty remote by NI's standards (ie. not really that remote at all, but you know what I mean).

I avoided putting these up in the beginning, but here's a few Belfast murals. What gives rise to them is total madness in my opinion, but they're an interesting part of our cultural history. The people that paint them are bigoted assholes for the most part, but credit where it's due; they're pretty decent artists.

This is a republican mural in Ardoyne, an 'interface' area in north Belfast (http://www.dannymorrison.ie/albums/CRAZYFENIAN/collusion_mural_ardoyne_2003.jpg) (refers to alleged RUC collusion with loyalist paramilitaries, I think)
Infamous Bobby Sands mural on the Falls Road (http://www.thetravelyear.com/photobig/ire701_belfast_mural_bobby_sands.jpg)
Loyalist mural on the Shankill Road (http://cain.ulst.ac.uk/images/photos/belfast/shankill/shankillmural2.jpg)
Speaks for itself (http://www.csus.edu/indiv/m/murphyl/images/close-up%20of%20loyalist%20sandy%20row%20mural,%20early%20july%202003.jpg) (I see this one quite frequently since Sandy Row is the easiest route to take to my boyfriend's house)

Hope I haven't put Keruvalia (or anyone else) off us now! These things are largely historical nowadays - most people are trying to put all that sectarian shit behind them. Still, they remain there and are thus more relevant images of Belfast.

This is overlooking my neck of the woods in Cedar City. Most of what you're seeing is my school. The large green field in the forground is our football field with the rest of campus spreading out behind it. The large red-brick building center-right is where I work, and the small white building below the red brick on the lower left is where I live.

Wow, those are beautiful. I really want to go to Ireland.

If you're thinking of getting flying lessons, be aware they're incredibly (at least for my age) expensive. I've spent almost $13,000 CAD on flying so far, and I've heard it's even more expensive in Ireland. Good luck if you do, though - it's totally worth it.

Ballyclare High School (from the air):
http://www.harveygroup.co.uk/images/portfolio/ballyclare_high_school.jpg

Ballyclare is a pretty non-descript town about 15 miles north-west of Belfast. The town is nothing special, but the school had a good reputation (I'm still undecided as to whether or not I agree with that assertion).

Lovely pics, CW. Whereabouts in Germany is this? How long have you lived here?

My hometown, which I have a well tread traditional hatred of having grown up there, has some cool shit in it that I will deny with frevor.

The Dam (http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/buildingbig/wonder/structure/images/folsom1_dam_1.jpg) Two dams ahead of it broke and it held. It also flooded a Mormon settlement. There is a road that relieves traffic across the river that when closes causes problems. Which makes the signs that say "Dam Road Closed" apt.

You're not a man until you've jumped off this. (http://www.hoffmanrealtygroup.com/images/home_bridge.jpg) I'm not a man. I did climb the arch underneath. The foot bridge behind it was recently put back. I actually haven't seen it, this picture was how I found out it was there now. That picture is taken at a place called Negro Bar. Across from China Beach (yeah...) and down the river from Mormon Island. It was a mining town with a lot of camps and not a lot of imagination.

Sutter Street. (http://www.sierrafoothillmagazine.com/Images/folsom.jpg) The first time I 'made out' with someone was behind one of these historic buildings surrounded by a bunch of cats. I don't know what was up with the cats.

Yes, we've heard the song. (http://www.efn.org/~hkrieger/j_folsom.jpg) You are not the first one to ask if we're on furlough. This was across the river from me. I would go down to the river and walk toward the dam where you could see the prison. The guards don't think it's funny to pass the big cable and sign saying 'Don't Cross.'

My school bus went by this (http://www.csus.edu/ums/images/CDC-Folsom-Gate_lg.jpg). There is a small neighborhood inside the prison grounds for the employees and the bus went there. Going out a guard would get on and walk the bus to make sure prisoners didn't sneak on. They also didn't find it funny if you ducked under the seats. They're a humorless bunch, those guards...

We have a historical hydro-electric power plant (http://www.energy.ca.gov/photos/150th/folsom.jpg). No one ever mentions that when I tell them where I came from...bastards...

This photo had to be taken pretty close to my house. (http://smaplab.ri.uah.edu/dmsms01/natoma.JPG) That's what we saw from our back yard, though a litte farther up.

How many small towns have a tiger? (http://www.folsomzoofriends.org/images/misty.jpg) When I grew there the zoo also had a lion. It was bad ass to hear a lion roar at 6am, you could hear him no matter where you were in town, you could hear him. It's a zoo for sick animals. It also housed the actual Smokey the Bear. Though apparently that's contested.

Big freakin' lake (http://www.orneveien.org/nikon5700/folsom-lake-raining-small.jpg). Used to be able to camp on the islands. Stupid paranoia.

This is close to where I lived as well (http://www.cliffhouseoffolsom.com/images/bridge_view.jpg). I liked this picture. I was looking for a picture of this strange ass scrap house and came across this.

I can't find the house. It appeared in a comic book once. Anyway, that's my home town for all the zero people who care.

Any city in California, maybe..

You'd have to substitute Jewel or Piggly-Wiggly or something to really capture the essence of the interior of the country.. maybe a Waffle House or two.. :p
You guys need to really get out of SoCal, come up to the deep end.

No Northern California mountian town is complete without its nostalgia tourist train. (http://www.holeworld.com/boeger/ibff2/train_conductor.jpg)

To agree with the traffic thing, apparently getting backed up on Hwy 17 has been a problem for a while. (http://www.reverbcentral.com/columns/what/highway_17_forties.jpg) But when you're on a highway carving through redwoods, who cares?

Here are some pictures of Downtown Lethbridge and the University I attend. These were taken by some University Student I don't know that were posted on the Internet. Lethbridge has about 80,000 people in it. It's a great city.

I want to do pictures of my college, though compared to the buildings that the europeans have been showing...just seems silly...but that's never stopped me before...

This is the upper quarry (http://www.es.ucsc.edu/~es10/fieldtripUCSC/images/Quarry/qfred.jpg).

Some yay-hoo (http://www.astroday.net/Images/Gary_UCSC.jpg) on campus. It might seem like these are places near campus, or surrounding campus, but they're not. This is what you walk through to get various parts of campus. That guy I believe is facing the Kerr bridge, or is in the canyon by Porter. Like this bridge (http://quantum.soe.ucsc.edu/members_clip_image002_0004.jpg) which leads from the library to the bookstore. Or this one (http://www.hep.uiuc.edu/LC/html_files/ucsc/ucsc_pictures/ucsc_woods_2.JPG) that connects Porter to the north end of campus, just below Kresge East. There are folks on the east side of campus (this is confusing, Kresge East is east of Kresge but is on the west side of campus) that would probably like to blow that bridge up...

This picture (http://www.ucsc.edu/images/splash/home/wireless.jpg) bothers me the most, and it's everywhere. First, who takes their laptop out to the woods to work on? Yes, there is more woods than anything else on that campus, but damn. Second, there is virtually no cell phone reception on the UCSC campus. Who is she calling, and how? This picture just mocks the students.

The deer are everywhere and aren't afraid of you (http://www.hep.uiuc.edu/LC/html_files/ucsc/ucsc_pictures/ucsc_fauna2.JPG). More along the lines of mildly annoyed.

The buildings aren't really that cool looking, especially considering the company they would be in...

Bah, Europeans can keep their musty old 'historic' buildings.. we've got some that are worth mentioning, even if they weren't around in Mozart's day, or whatever...

Here's a picture of my school, facing the CLA building from Parking Lot F, as seen in the movie Gattaca... :p

That's pretty cool. The only film that I know of being made here was The Lost Boys (http://www.ukmelia.com/albums/lostboys/david1.jpg). I tried to find a better frame from that movie that would show the Boardwalk rather than just the Carousel but I got bored looking. That bridge they hang from in the movie is the foot bridge across the San Lorenzo river (stream would be more accurate) to the Boardwalk and isn't that high up. You don't need to be vampire to survive the drop. I know, I know, totally ruins your faith in the film...;)

Yeah, you start to notice that Hollywood special effects are pretty ingenious once they distort something you're familiar with.. just in that picture I posted before, they made the buildings look about 15% bigger than they are by using a car that must be three feet high, and while the knoll on the right-hand side really is a knoll, the patch of what looks like grass on the left is really the faculty parking lot.. :p Digital manipulation is pretty nifty.

Edit: I should mention, there's actually a scene in that movie where Jude Law's character rolls his wheelchair right past the front door to the room where film classes are held, where I had TH201.. that was kinda weird..

My first day on a film set we did a stunt where a Model A slams into a Nash Sedan. To do it they disconnected shocks on the Nash so it sat on springs and attatching a cable to the axle of the Model A. When the Model A reached the end of the cable it would jerk forward and the stunt co-ordinator on the other side of the Nash lifted up and pushed down on the Nash making it look like it was hit, even though the cars where four to five feet apart. The first two times I was side on and it looked ridiculous. The next time I was behind the camera (not operating it, just standing behind where it was) and it looked like a real accident. I was doing picture cars (as a PA) for that film but since it was my first day all I got to do was nudge the guy in the Maxwell to drive by as a background car in another scene. Ah, so glamorous...

I missed the day that they took the Stutz out to whip it around a parking lot to test out for the other stunt.

That's neat.. I don't think I've ever seen a movie being filmed, at least that I can remember just now.. I had a job as a studio technician for a year, filming classes for distance learning, a small 5-camera setup, no big thing.. my dad's big claim to fame was being there at Marina City in Chicago (the round twin towers) when they drove that muscle car off it into the river for the Steve McQueen movie.. but that was before I was born.. :p I don't seem to run into interesting situations like that..

I take it that's the one up north, rather than the one on your way into Bakersfield from L.A.. :p In any case, that sounds like a sweet job, to be doing stuff like that.. That picture reminds me of the time the Michigan Ave. bridge got stuck in the "up" position when I was there in the
3rd grade or so.. there was no shortage of amateur directors there then, following in the Mack Senett tradition of using natural (or semi-natural) disasters to their own advantage.. :)

It's pretty cool, but it's far apart-the middle is filled working on reality shows (I'm sorry america) and times like this where I'm sitting on my ass hoping that I can get a gig before the month is up so I can pay rent...

Though on one of those reality shows I spent the day on this beach (http://www.epa.gov/region09/features/images/pacifica_beach.jpg) with the steady cam crew waiting for thier next call. All 'on the clock.' That was kick ass.

There are buildings amongst the trees (most of the time you can't see one building from the other), but they're not as cool as the woods you have to walk through to get there. This is Kresge (http://sunsite.berkeley.edu/uchistory/archives_exhibits/campus_planning/atkinson_archive/ucsc/photos/UCSC_25_rf.jpg), which was my college. (it's set up like Harvard, the university has several colleges.) Not as cool as the trees. And the warning signs about mountain lions...

Not to rub things in, but in high school I was part of the Youth Music Monterey program (part of the Monterey Jazz Festival) where I lived on 17 Mile Drive for three weeks, almost literally on Spyglass (http://www.golf-tuition-online.com/vbportal/photopost/data/523/7846spyglass1.jpg). All day playing jazz, then wandering across Spyglass to get to the beach...that was pretty kickass...

It gets like that here. We have Greyhound (bus line)but that can be...interesting. But in California you kinda have to have a car. I have two. I've always been intrigued by Prince Rupert, ever since I saw it's airport diagram in the CFS (sorta a phone book/diagram book for all the airports in Canada). The airport is right next to the water, and almost on a cliff edge-type thing. I want to stop by there some time ;-)
