Classic North Carolina ice storm headed my way!

If I abruptly "go off the air," you'll know that the lines are down here. There's a classic North Carolina ice storm headed my way from the West. We're currently under a "Winter Storm Warning." These things are a major pain in the ass. Two years ago ( I think ), we had one and I was without power for five days! They had to call in power line crews from as far away as Michigan to help restore things to normal. ( shrug ) Just another example of how, though we can fly and split the atom, we're largely helpless when Mother Nature throws a hissy fit. :)

I think winter is Mother Natures PMS.

And where the hell is this global warming I've been hearing about? I'M COLD DAMMIT!

you should probably go to the store and fight all the yahoos over bottled water and beanie weenies. :)

Oh and the emergency power repair guys from here are on call, but I didn't know for where yet. We are the best in the nation and close to the top in the world. ;)

It went to Australia and South Africa for Christmas.

They've been promising the worst winter for 40 years here for a few months, but luckily it hasn't come yet...here's hoping it doesn't!

Anyway, good luck, Eut. Hope you don't get snowed in too badly.

Heh! I'm actually quite comfortable just now, but that could change rather abruptly. All of my heating devices are electrically powered. Sigh.

LOL! Nahh. I keep some emergency supplies on hand at all times, as well as things like candles, etc.

Apparently, Georgia is already having problems, and the line of ice storms extend all the way from there up into New England. Gonna be an "interesting" week, this is.

Thanks. It's unlikely to snow much in NC, but our ice storms are legendary. Seems the temperature here often gets just low enough that trees, power lines, etc. are just cold enough to make rain near the freezing point ice them over ... happens at least once every two or three years on average.

Yeah, I'm right there with you, Eut. It's been coming down all morning; the trees are looking pretty droopy already due to the load of ice they're carrying. One of my dogs wiped out on the front steps this morning (and it's a lot harder to slip and fall when you have four feet and not just two!) Looks like the streets are OK for now, but they're going to be a colossal mess tonight.

During the great ice storm a few years back, I was one of the lucky ones. I lived in Apex, which has its own power company and its own linemen, who were dedicated to getting Apex re-wired before they went to help out the neighbors in Fuquay-Varina. As a result, I had electricity back within 12 hours. (Living 10 miles from a nuclear power plant probably didn't hurt, either. Fewer miles of lines to replace, and all that.) But in Durham, where I live now, people were without power for ten days!

Fortunately I'm prepared in case that happens again. My father-in-law just dropped off a load of firewood on Tuesday, so we can heat the house, and I have two unopened bottles of single-malt Scotch, so I won't be bored. :D

Edit: Wow, post number 666! Party! http://www.clicksmilies.com/s0105/teufel/devil-smiley-018.gif

yeah I do too, we restock in the early spring. They don't call where I live tornado alley for nothing. :P

I remember year before last in March it was 70 degrees out side and it started raining and the tornado sirens went off and my kids freaked out so we went to hide (if the kids hadn't freaked out and my hubby was here I would have been outside checking it out) anyway, so we get into the closet and there is this horrible sound like the house is breathing and then it gets really loud and crackly and then it sounds like a semi truck is driving through the house. Then 15 min later my weather radio gives the all clear, and I go to look outside, there is a foot of hail in my back yard, it looked like snow, but when you got closer it was m&m size hail. It was sooo weird, but yet so normal too :D

haha...well, not quite...She got her masters in nursing when I was in elementary school (I still remember a good number of the lectures that I sat in on, with my coloring books and juice boxes)

she just finished a massage therapy school...its been something she's wanted to do for years, and always thought people would laugh at her...but me, my father, and my sister are all quite proud of her (particularly because she has some joint problems, and had wrist surgery right before her first year, so could only do the academic work and had to rush to get the experiance work done). At some points she was gonna quit because of the joint pain, but the surgery healed and I'm glad she stuck with it.

I didn't get to see that one, but I can give you a brief description of the last one we had.

It started with a gentle rain late in the evening. By about 2 AM, the trees were starting to creak and groan ( literally! ) with their burden of ice, and the power lines were either sagging or already down. By about eight the next morning, there was so much ice that really big tree-limbs were breaking off and falling, all the bushes were flat as pancakes, and my front door was frozen shut ( I couldn't get it open )! By noon, ALL the lines were down, I was without power, without heat, and ( worst of all ) without cable!

I kept a trickle of water running in the tap so the lines wouldn't feeze up, lit a bunch of candles, and heated water for my coffee over a small backpack stove. When my BACK door froze over, I was effectively trapped in my house. Eventually I got pissed off and kicked the front door open, and had to replace the damned thing later! Heh!

The best part of last weekend was watching my texan and californian floormates thinking it was the end of the world. Neither have seen snow. They don't understand that while that wasn't exactly a typical storm, it wasn't that bad either.

That and the fact that they were acting like 6 year olds running around screaming "LET'S BUILD A SNOWMAN!!"

Going to the University of New Hampshire, I never understood the people from the south that would complain about the cold when it got to December or January. It made me so mad. What did they expect? They were in frelling NEW HAMPSHIRE.

Gah...you have it easy. We get the same kind of ice storms here in Wisconsin, and consider it an easy weekend.

Just yesterday we got 10 inches of snow...nobody even blinked.

Hell...my parents plan to retire to North Carolina sometime in the next few years...

You have to head into Canada, or up into the Rockies, to experience anything as mind-numbingly cold, windy, snowy, icy, slushy, and generally crappy as a Wisconsin winter. (Though those Nor'easters can be murder, from what I hear)

So consider yourself lucky, Eut! :p

LOL! Well, I grew up in PA ( from 12 on ), so I was use to a bit of snow, even learned how to drive when there was snow on the road. Unfortunately for those who have never seen more than a slight dusting of the white stuff, the reality is rather more than their imaginations.

Now, if you wanna talk about "cold," I went to the Winter Operations Instructor Course with the military at Camp Ripley, MN in January one year. They had us building lean-tos to sleep in when the temp was a MINUS 47 degrees below zero! I NEVER want to see cold like that again! EVER! Heh!

Heh! Well, it was new to me. You can't make ANY mistakes when it's that cold and you're having to be out in it for days on end. We were pulling Akios ( a type of sled with real shallow runners ) with our gear in them, and would work up a sweat. When we stopped for the night, we had to change socks and underwear or catch hypothermia.

Once, when we were setting up camp, I knew we would be working up a sweat again, building lean-tos and such, so I decided to wait and change my socks later after we were done. WRONG answer, Kemosabe! I got the shivers and couldn't stop. I finally changed all my clothes, climbed into my extreme cold weather sleeping bag, and piled all my other clothes on top of me. It took me over an hour to stop shaking! NOT something I want to repeat! :headbang:
