What is the most important aspect of X-mas to you ?

The Squeaky Rat

And yet another topic spawned by the continuing war on Christmas.. namely one that will somewhat try to determine what people actually consider most important about this jolly season.

So.. which aspect is most important to you ? Please be honest.. if you for instance think you "should" answer "thinking of universal brotherhood of all mankind" while in reality you spend a whole 10 seconds on that and 5 hours on playing with your pressies - vote presents.

The options of the forthcoming poll:
1. The exchange (or just giving/receiving) of presents
2. Being together with your family/friends/loved ones
3. The chanting of carols, telling of stories and reading of Dickens
4. Decorating the tree (and possibly burning it afterwards)
5. Reflecting on the birth of Christ
6. Reflecting on the past and future happenings of your life
7. Reflecting on the possibilities of universal peace and brotherhood
8. The day off from work/school
9. Something not mentioned in this poll
10. HUMBUG ! (I do not care for Christmas)

Apologies if this poll is already present.

the birth of Christ (and yes, I know it wasn't actually on that day)

I thought a poll like this existed already ...

Anyway, eating and drinking to much while having laughs whith my family is the way I like to spend Christmas.

Personally, it reminds me (and not always pleasantly) that another year is nearly over. Same with birthdays, so not really equivalent to item 6.

Oh, and there's good telly on (or at least an eclectic mix that ensures there's something interesting), which might equate to 8 at a stretch.

The closest thing I can think of to a poll item is that I rather like giving presents, but I'm not actually too hot on being asked "what I want for christmas" and would rather be surprised by receiving something impracticle than have to specify something I would like to receive... So it's a mangled version of item #2.

To go through the others:
Being together with your family/friends/loved ones: is Ok, but I only see them marginally more at Christmas than at normal, anyway, and that starts encroaching on the annoying.

The chanting of carols, telling of stories and reading of Dickens: isn't really my thing. (I'll read Dickens off my own back, thankyouverymuch...)

Decorating the tree (and possibly burning it afterwards): I don't drape the house. The tree is artificial. The fumes from same would be toxic... ;)

Reflecting on the birth of Christ: Not really within my philosophy.

Reflecting on the possibilities of universal peace and brotherhood: Good luck for it, but why is Christmas a better time for this to happen? Is there as good a chance of this occuring (throughout the whole world) during Ramadan/Hanuckah/etc?

HUMBUG ! (I do not care for Christmas): Well, I woudn't go that far. I'd miss it if it weren't around any more. Or subscribe to whatever other winter-solstice festival sprung up to replace it, probably, if not just stretch New Year festivities to start a week early to compensate... ;)

Being happy, and making other people happy. Through presents or otherwise.

Also cake. Mmm, marzipan...

I wish I got socks :(

I'm constantly buying them, yet never throwing them away.

Although I like the presents, the best thing that I like about Christmas is the food. You get to eat stuff that you do not have for the rest of the year.

To quote Eric Cartman, "it is the time for the Christmas trees and pie." What more do you want from a holiday?

I live in Asia, so the holiday season is often the only time of year I see my family in Canada. For that reason alone, it is a very special time.

Getting cool stuff is also kinda neat...

Spending way too much money on everyone else but myself. Bah Humbug does not even begin to express my feelings towards Xmas. I only recognize the holiday because my wife celebrates it.

Surely getting drunk is the most important thing. I for one will be wasted by 10am on christmas day. and why the hell not? I suppose presents and family are also important, and eating a gigantic meal, ooooh and those little sausages with bacon wrapped round. yes they are the mostest important thing.

Shame on you for waiting till christmas to get drunk. A true drunk makes drinking a part of his everyday life.

Exactly!

And yes; I have to second your eating lots of seafood remark. It's the only time of year I actually get to, really.

"What's the most important aspect of X-mas to you?"

Well, although I chose the poll option about being with family ( for obvious reasons ), a close second would be that people not abbreviate the name "Christmas!" :p

I like how for a couple of days, all the hobos have minty-fresh breath, then go into hibernation and aren't found until the snow clears next year.

I find the most enjoyable thing is going to Wal-Mart on December 26th and watching the many thousands of people trying to push their way through the crowds to return unwanted gifts.

The thing I like most about Christmas is that we're reminded of our own humanity. My family and friends do a lot of charity work year round, but it seems to intensify during the Christmas season. Others are inspired to participate. I like getting together, celebrating, talking and dropping differences. I like the whole social aspect of it.

For me, it's Yule or the Winter Solstice. For us heathens ;) it's a time to remember that no matter how bad things get, they will get better. Appreciate friends, family, and the hard work we've done over the year. It's a time to work on crafts, meditate, and contemplate.

OMG this is creepy, you're me. (Should I be afraid?)

Numnum salmon steaks, shrimps in parsley, and oysters in cheese sauce.

And then pie.
