Buck Rogers vs. Flash Gordon

Ha ha! Now that's some top quality irrelevence.

But still. With all the one sci-fi universe vs. another what's it that pop up now and then I thought I might chime in with one, albiet one that I'm likely to be 2/3rds of the respondents to, if there are any at all. But enough of my pre-killing the thread...

So, in the big bad show down, who do you go with?

Flash Gordon, the star athlete recruited by accident by Dr. Zorkoff to fight the evil Ming the Merciless who brings his whole planet to our solar system to conquer the earth (even though he's still fighting the factions of animal themed kingdoms on his planet, primarily the Lion Men, though his hold on the Hawkmen is tenious at best. No one cares really about the Shark Men, they're the French of space...(I really have nothing against the French, it's too bad people have sucked the fun out of ribbing the French...))

Or is it the Rip Van Winkle-esque Buck Rogers, who goes into a cave and passes out for 500 years to be awakend by Dr. Huer to fight against evil warlords and 'mongo' hordes.

Both have a hot side kick (Dale Arden for Flash, Wilma Deering for Buck), get evil princess' and queens hot in the drawers, and have easily distracted scientests who will whore themselves out to who ever has a kick ass lab...
EDIT: Both have been played by Buster Crabbe (who also played a pilot named Flash in the Buck Rogers TV series...)

If you like, you can instead rely on the 1980 movie and 1979 TV series for each respectively.

Pick your champion, earthlings!

But, Buck Rogers inspired a brilliant Looney Tune parody staring Daffy Duck and Marvin the Martian...

"Flash, I love you, but we only have 14 hours to save the Earth!"

-Dale Arden, 14 hours before Flash saves Earth

"Buck, while you were sleeping, there was a nuclear exchange which, according to a crappy episode in the later seasons, you failed to prevent. The Earth was blasted to utter dogshit, and billions died. Nice hair."

Both the originals had a lot in common. They both had the same music, used the same models, used spare costumes left over from other bigger productions and both had larry buster crabbe - of "smoke camels kids, they're toasted and don't catch your breath". Actually, going by the little I remember from watching them on saturday morning TV in my pre-teen years (followed by champion the wonder horse a.k.a. your license fee at work  ) there isn't much to choose between them.

Therefore any comparison has to be made on the basis of the updated versions. And while it is true that flash gordon had music by queen, buck rogers had erin grey who gave my teenage mind impure thoughts.

So Buck Rogers it is.

Nice recall of the tv series. I actually don't remember it that well. And, you made me laugh.

One of the sites I went to trying to remember which came first (Buck, but ultimately I decided to give up on that part of the post) noted that the dude who did Van Helsing is working on a new Flash Gordon movie. I honestly don't know how to feel...

This supports the DVDA premise of what makes a man.

The Buck Rogers tv series continued the tradition of borrowed sets using footage from Battlestar Gallactica. Which to a degree amuses me.

Erin's suit was...tight...

The dude being the actor (Wolverine guy, Huge Ackman, or something) or the dude being the director?

Wonder if we can get Christopher Walken for Arkov...

Director, and good call on Zarkov

EDIT:Looking at the imdb page, I'm guessing this puppy has been shelved, since it has a 2006 release and hasn't been updated since 2004. And has no cast or crew listed.

With our luck, it'll be Ashton Kutcher as Flash, J-Lo as Dale, Lance Bass as Klytus (sic?), and Arkov, well...Vin Diesel is free...

Yah. It's like imprinted me or something though. Sometimes I find myself watching Buck Rogers on the Sci-fi channel for no apparent reason.

Still I am happy to report I still have the impure thoughts.

It hurts, it hurts!!!

I don't know who would make a good Flash. It's almost too bad we aren't still in that phase where athletes try to be actors...okay, no it's not, but if we where one of them would work...

Even the costumes from the serials where pretty racy. No doubt sent some kids in the 30s through puberty.

Though the sight of Zarkov in that one piece outfit that looked like his balls where about to fall out of could always act as a cold shower...

edit: See?

I was too young to properly appreciate good costumes when the original serials were on TV. Damn it.

Edit: LOL 2 your edit. Good stuff.

Pretty funny, the site that I got this from has a series of images making fun of the fact that she has the same expression through most of the serials.

Dale was really just kidnap bait-
